MS. TERESA ANN (TERRY) GENTRY, age 52, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning, November 30, 2012, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 11, 1960, a daughter of the late Robert Joseph Gentry and Sarah Ann Wells Gentry who survives. Besides her mother, Sarah Ann Wells Gentry of Summerville, Ms. Gentry is survived by a sister and brother-in-law Sherrie and Steven Helton of Summerville; Brother and sister-in-law John and Teresa Gentry of Cartersville. Nephew, Will Gentry and Niece, Eryn Gentry. Several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 2nd, at 3:00 P.M. from graveside in West Hill Cemetery with Ministers’ Jeff Burns and John Paul Burns officiating. DR. EARL BEATTY, JR., age 92, of Fort Valley, Georgia passed away Monday, November 26, 2012. Born in Summerville, Georgia on December 11, 1919 to the late Dr. Earl Beatty, Sr. and Addie Willard Beatty. A graduate of Darlington School and Emory University School of Dentistry, He was a Veteran of WW II serving in the Army as Regimental Dental Surgeon of the 508th Parachute Infantry. He saw combat in Europe and served as General Eisenhower’s Honor Guard at USFET Headquarters in Germany after the war ended in 1945. He remained in the Reserves and was transferred to the Air Force with service in Korea and Viet Nam until retirement in 1973 with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Beatty was a member of numerous dental associations, serving as President of the Central Dental Society in 1967. He was an elder in the Fort Valley Presbyterian Church, a Mason, Shriner, and member of many other civic organizations. He was preceded in death by first wife, Martha Rackley Beatty and second wife, Nita Wilder Graham Beatty. Surviving are son and wife, Earl (Jean) Beatty, III; stepson, James E. Graham; four Grandchildren and two Great Grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 1st, at 11 A.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, interment in the Family lot of Summerville Cemetery with full military honors. MRS. MATTIE M. BROOME, age 95, of West Armuchee Road, Subligna community, Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at her residence. She was born in Walker County, Georgia on July 25, 1917, a daughter of the late John M. and Martha Edwards Fowler. Was preceded in death by Her husband the late Faye H. Broome. She was a member of the Subligna Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters-Charlotte Chapman of Subligna, Shelia Bridges of Ringgold, and Debra Jackson of West Armuchee; sons-Marion Broome of Calhoun, Jackie Broome of East Armuchee, and Billy Broome of Summerville; 15 Grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 25th, at 2:00 P.M. from the Subligna Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Bishop and Rev. David Pruitt officiating, interment in Subligna Cemetery. MRS. WILMA NIX TOLES, age 89, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Monday, November 12, 2012, afternoon in the local nursing home. A daughter of the late James William (Will) and Eula Williams Nix, she was born on March 9, 1923 in Chattooga County, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Charles Fletcher Toles, Sr. to whom she was married September 20, 1947 also preceded by two sisters and Six brothers. Mrs. Toles was retired from the sewing department of Best Manufacturing, Menlo, and a member of Best’s Silver Club. Mrs. Toles was a faithful, and the last surviving charter member of West Berryton Faith Temple. Surviving are son & daughter-in-law Charles, Jr. and Jo Ann Toles of Menlo; Grandchildren-Clark & Melissa Miller; Bradley & Julie Wolfrum, Heather McClung, Farrah McClung, Lindsay Patty, & Jimmy Patty; eight Great Grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Estelle and Lamar Toles and Iris Toles; several nieces and nephews also survive. MRS. MABLE CUNDIFF, age 84, of Back Penn Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday morning at her residence. A daughter of the late Dewey and Mary Gentry Padgett, she was born on July 5, 1928 and was preceded in death by her husband the late John A. Cundiff, Jr. on April 21, 1995, and a son the late William Holt. Mrs. Cundiff was Church of God by faith. Surviving are sons-Jimmy Cundiff, Johnny Cundiff, Ray Cundiff all of Summerville, and Robert Cundiff of Arab, Alabama. Daughters- Linda Bray and Kay Padgett of Summerville. Sisters- Odell Hudgins and Mildred White of Dalton. A brother Charles Padgett of Sugar Valley, Georgia; 13 Grandchildren, 37 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at 11 A.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Elizabeth Wilks

After a long and joyous life, Elizabeth Gravlee Wilks passed away on November 1st at a family residence in Summerville, Georgia. Longtime resident of the Birmingham area, Mrs. Wilks was predeceased by her husband Robert Hobson Wilks. Mrs. Wilks is survived by her son Robert Bradley “Bob” Wilks of Birmingham; her daughter Nell Wilks Farrar and son-in-law Arch Farrar of Summerville, Georgia; two grand-daughters, Challis Elizabeth Farrar Latta with her husband Andy Latta of Gainesville, Georgia; and Mary Catherine Farrar of Summerville, Georgia. A descendant of the Gravlee-Nalls and Newton-Chambliss families of Fayette County, Elizabeth Gravlee was born on November 9, 1921 in Newtonville, Alabama. She graduated from Fayette High School prior to entering the University of Alabama where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education Degree in 1944. Her career in education continued for many years as she taught high school classes in home economics in Fayette County, Talladega County and Jefferson County. In 1968, she was named Supervisor of Vocational Home Economics for the Jefferson County Board of Education, and began a career in which she thrived and maintained high standards for the vocational home economics departments. Always growing and learning, she earned her Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Montevallo in 1973. Following her retirement in 1987, Mrs. Wilks continued to enjoy her fellow educators through her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma. She also found time for travel abroad as well as to famous locations in the United States. In addition, she enjoyed time with family, friends and church groups. She was a longtime resident of the Altadena Valley area and member of the Lakeside Baptist Church. A memorial service was helds Saturday, November 3rd at 11 o’clock in the morning at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home located at 10355 Commerce Street, Summerville, Georgia. Family received friends in the hour prior to the service. Interment was at Memory Hill Cemetery in Albertville, Alabama immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice or to Lakeside Baptist Church, 2865 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35243. Earle Rainwater Funeral Home was in charge of services.

MRS. TENNIE RUTH TIDMORE, age 84, of Adairsville, Georgia, formerly of Lyerly, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at Her residence. Born in Chattooga County, Georgia on May 21, 1928, She was a daughter of the late John Frank and Susie Akins Whisenant. Mrs. Tidmore was a member of Lyerly First Baptist Church, was retired from the maintenance department of Bigelow-Sanford-Georgia Rug Mill, and was co-owner/operator of Tidmore Washateria in Lyerly. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Vernon Lindenberg Tidmore, also several Sisters and Brothers died earlier. Surviving are daughter-Lynda Steele of Adairsville; sons-David Earnest Tidmore of Cloudland and John Frank Tidmore of Lyerly; grandchildren-Alisha Steele, Jennifer Malone, Tina Steele, Derdia Adams, Derick Tidmore, and Keri Beth Jones; sixteen Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. MRS. KATHY LYNN DODD, age 49, of Ramey Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, morning at her residence following an extended illness. She was born in Rome, Georgia on July 31, 1963, to the late Patsey Mozell LuAllen Collins and Thomas Lamar Collins who survives. She was a Homemaker. Mrs Dodd was preceded in death by her Mother, and brothers-Michael Anthony Collins and Thomas Ray Collins. Surviving are husband-Neal Ashmore; father-Thomas Collins; daughters-Kaitlyn Ashmore and Kelsie Ashmore all of Summerville; sons-Jesse (Christy) Dodd of Rome and Bryan (Breanna) Ashmore of Summerville; brother-Gary F. Collins; sister-Margie Collins both of Summerville; grandchildren-Jordan Dodd, Taylor Dodd, Devan Fowler, Shelby Rhodes, and Evan Ashmore; mother-in-law-Ann Bass of Summerville. MRS. LOIS GREEN, age 92, of Filter Plant Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, October 28, 2012, at her residence. A native Chattoogan, She was born to the late Robert Wesley and Mary Eva Brown Dover on January 12, 1920. Mrs. Green was a member of Berryton Baptist Church, retired from the rubberizing department of Georgia Rug Mill, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Leonard Green, sons-Jerry Green, Larry Green, and Ray Green; grandsons-Jay Crider, Duel Bandy, and Joey Green; sisters-Grace Skates, Lucille Lindsey and Beulah Cummings; brothers: Arville Dover, Albert Dover, Harve Dover, Tiny Dover and Morris Dover Surviving are daughters-Betty June Pope of Menlo, Nancy Crider of Summerville, Charlotte Woody of Berryton, and Sadie Croy of Lyerly; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren also survive. MS. BARBARA ANN BROWN, age 70, of Espy Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012, in a Rome hospital. Born in Floyd County, Georgia on January 17, 1942, She was the daughter of the late Jessie R. (Peck) Baxter and Bernie McKowen Baxter. Ms. Brown attended the East Trion Church of God and was retired from the finishing lab of Mt. Vernon/Riegel Textile Mills. Surviving are daughter-Kay Brown of Summerville; son-Randy Brown of Kennesaw; aunt-Vestal Hudson of Jacksonville, FL.; granddaughters-Jamie Siggelko and Sarah Brown; several Cousins also survive. MRS. FRANCES PONDER, age 82, of Hammond Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, October 8, 2012, morning. She was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, born in Trion, Georgia on June 13, 1930, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Mae Bohannon Gilmer, who died while Mrs. Ponder was a young child and was reared by her grandmother the late Maebelle Gilmer. Surviving are husband-Henderson F. Ponder; two Daughters and sons-in-law- Claudette and Jerry Mahan of Summerville and Jenette and Coleman Slay, Jr. of Armuchee; Five Grandchildren, Four Great Grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Bryant and Rev. David Craven officiating, interment in the Family Plot of Summerville Cemetery. MR. CARL D. SANFORD, age 71, of Holland-Chattoogaville Road, Lyerly, Georgia passed away Friday (October 5, 2012) in a Rome hospital. A native of Round Mountain, Alabama, He was born to the late Cicero and Rena Ward Sanford on December 17, 1940. Mr. Sanford graduated Mississippi State University on a football scholarship and began a forty year manufacturing Executive career in Summerville, Georgia with Georgia Rug Mill, later Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill; then to Canada, then with BASF/Honeywell in Dalton. Afterward retiring to the 750 acre Family farm on Holland-Chattoogaville Road. Surviving are His wife-Tippy Sanford; sons-Colter Sanford of Chattoogaville and Tyler of Summerville; grandchildren-Carlie Sanford, Colton Sanford, Ayla Sanford, and Cason Sanford; sister-Dixie Messer of Cedar Bluff, AL; brothers-Sam Sanford of Cedar Bluff, AL and D.C. Sanford of Jamestown, Al; several Nieces and Nephews. His Family will receive friends Sunday, October 7th, from 3 until 5 P.M. @ the residence on Holland-Chattoogaville Road-Lyerly. WILSON

MR. CHARLES B. WILSON, age 87 of Hwy. #48-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Dutton, Alabama, he was born to the late James Aubry Wilson, Sr. and Lena Ada Eva Gibson Wilson on October 12, 1924 and was known to his many friends as “Charlie B.” He moved to Summerville in 1936, graduated from Summerville High School, and married the love of his life, Dora Ellen Bynum on April 16, 1943. After a month of married bliss, he entered the U. S. Army and after training, landed in the “D” Day Invasion, June 6, 1944, in the third wave on Utah Beach-Normandy, France; made His way through France into Belgium where he also fought in the “Battle of the Bulge”. For his service Mr. Wilson received many medals and commendations from the U.S. Army and was awarded the Medal of Honor from France only a few years ago.  Mr. Wilson was a member, deacon, and led the Church Choir, of West Summerville Baptist Church; and was preceded in death by siblings-Claudine Fowler, Maughee Evans, Ewert Wilson, Lorenzo Wilson, and James A. Wilson, Jr. 

 Surviving are his Wife, Ellen Bynum Wilson; Daughter, Phyllis (Earle) Rainwater; Sisters, Montez Gladney and Joan Renslow all of Summerville; Grandchildren, Tracy (Tracy) Rainwater, Schawna (Vince) Collier, Clint (Amy) Rainwater; Great Grandchildren, Emily Marie Rainwater, Lauren Elizabeth Rainwater, Abbie Lynn Rainwater,  Carrie Elizabeth Martin and Chris Allen; Great Great Grandson, Graydon Allen; several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.

MRS. DOROTHY CHAPPELEAR, age 87, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012, in the local nursing home. She was born in Henagar, Alabama October 6, 1924 to the late Hugh Roy and Ella Anderson Riley. Mrs. Chappelear was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. Surviving are son-Steve Chappelear of Summerville; sisters-Clara Bohannon of Summerville and Sarah John Durham of Trion; Grandchildren- Christi Smith, Lisha Mickey and Steve Chappelear II; Seven Great Grandchildren; Three Great Great Grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 25th, at 4:30 P. M. from the J. D. MR. W. L. MARTIN, age 75, of Davis Road-Trion, Georgia, Mt. View Community, passed away Monday, September 17, 2012, at his residence. A native of Barrow County, Georgia, He was born to the late Willis L. and Martha Gaddis Martin on February 26, 1937. Mr. Martin was a Veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Army Paratroopers and a retired auto body repairman. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Essie Vernon Martin and daughter the late Diane Sparks. Surviving are grandsons-Adam Gorham and Chad Campbell both of Summerville; several Great Grandchildren. At Mr. Martin’s request the body will be cremated and there will be no funeral service. MR. FRANKLIN WARD, age 87, of Filter Plant Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, September 17, 2012, in the local nursing home. He was born in Walker County Georgia on September 24, 1924, a son of the late Deed L. and Lillie Davis Ward. Mr. Ward was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church, a Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army Paratrooper 82nd Airborn, and was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Alice Timmons Ward, daughter-Diane Lovelace, son-Gerald Ward, sister-Louise Vaughn, and brothers-Tony Ward, Edward Ward, and Bobby Ward. Surviving are Step-sons: Mitchell &Teresa Hensley of Trion and John & Pam Hensley of LaFayette; Four Grandchildren: Phyllis Bussey, Christy Dawson, Katrina Hensley, Tara Hensley-Evans; Brother: Johnny Ward; Ten Great-Grandchildren; Seven Great-Great-Grandchildren. CARROLL

MR. WILLIAM BRADLEY CARROLL, age 47, of Millen, Georgia formerly of Chattooga County, Georgia, passed away Sunday (September 9, 2012). Mr. Carroll was born to the late Larry Franklin Carroll and Sandra Padgett Carroll Howard who survives. He was a contractor and was preceded in death by paternal grandparents Rev. A.B. and Mrs. Dalton Bowling Carroll; maternal grandparents-Mr. & Mrs. William Padgett; sister-Mandy Carroll and brother-Bruce Carroll. 

 Surviving are sons-Jason Carroll and Brent Carroll of Cumming, GA. & Bentley Carroll; mother & step father-Sandra Padgett Howard and Bobby F. Howard of Hubert, N.C.; brother-David of Millen, GA; half sister-Elena Carroll of LaFayette; half brother-Berry Carroll of Chattanooga; three Grandchildren; several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, and Nephews.

MRS. HAZEL A. HENDERSON, age 92, of Pine Street-Trion, Georgia passed away Friday (September 7, 2012) evening in a Rome hospital. She was born on March 19, 1920 in Walker County, Georgia to the late William McKinley and Myrtis Rosalee Brown Adams. Mrs. Henderson was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church, the American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries’, and was retired from Mt. Vernon/Riegel Mill. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Hobert Henderson on September 7, 1993. Surviving are daughters and spouses-Maxine Henderson and Steve Drummond of Gibson, GA. and Phyllis and Larry Stansell of Trion; brother-Freeman E. Adams of Pensacola, FL.; grandchildren-Michael and Paula Drummond of Seneca, S.C., Cynthia and Danny Blume of Gaston, S.C., and Melissa and Adams Hankins of Trion; Five Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 9th, at 3:30 P.M. from Graveside in West Hill Cemetery with Rev. David Autry officiating. The Family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
MR. JASON WAYNE CARMON, age 34, of Penn Street-Trion, Georgia passed away Friday evening in a Rome hospital. Born in Rome, Georgia on April 30, 1978 He was a son of the late Jerry Carmon and Sue Thompson Carmon who survives. Jason enjoyed golf and fishing and was a member of Local Millwright #1263. Surviving are His daughters-Briana Michelle Carmon and Apryl Jaylee Carmon of Summerville; mother-Sue Carmon of Trion; sister-Erin Carmon of Trion. Memorial service will be held Saturday, September 15th, at 3:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. James Braddy and Bobby Chastain officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Anthony “Zipper” Campbell, Gary Pruitt, Local Millwright #1263, Lorie Bentley, Billy Bryant, Donnie Cordle, Kevin Bentley, Michael Hancock and Marlene Smith. MRS. MARY HELEN DAVIS, age 82, of Highland Avenue-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, August 20, 2012, in a Rome hospital. A native of Chickamauga, Georgia, She was born to the late Robert D. and Alma Lively Browning on July 13, 1930. Mrs. Davis was a member of Ridgedale Unity Church of God and retired from the Creeling Department of Mohawk Mills. Surviving are son & daughter-in-law-Danny R. & Sally Davis of Summerville; grandsons-Michael & Ragon Crabtree of Rome, Jimbo & Gina Crabtree and Stacy & Crystal Crabtree all of Summerville; eight Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 22nd, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Russell officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery.
