JACKSON, MRS. JOYCE ELAINE

MRS. JOYCE ELAINE JACKSON, age 79, of Harrisburg Road - Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, July 1st, 2011, at her home. She was born in Denver, Colorado on April 3rd, 1932, a daughter of the late Emile T. and Thelma Madison Gourdin. Mrs. Jackson was a homemaker and a local artist and craft person.

Surviving are her husband Ernest Lee Jackson, daughters Cristy & Danny Blackwell and Elaine & Richard Stowe all of Summerville, a son Jerry & Sue Jackson of Lander, Wyoming , Grandchildren Justin Stowe, Morgan Stowe and Adam Blackwell and Great Grandchildren, Jaxon Stowe, Claire Stowe, Peyton Stanton and Blayke Stanton.

MR. EDWARD LEE TUDOR, age 66, of Dry Creek Road-Summerville, Georgia was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 24, 2011. Born on December 26, 1944 He was a son of the late E. A. and Frances Cathleen Townsell Tudor. Mr. Tudor served in the United States Army earning the rank of SP4 as an MP, serving in Vietnam 1967 and 1968. He was a member of the Church of Christ (Iglesia Ni Cristo) in Huntsville, AL. Before retirement Mr. Tudor was plant manager at Riyadi, Saudi Arabia for 7 years, and most recently worked with Mt. Vernon Mills in the dyeing department.

Precious memories will live on with His wife, Carolina Dingal Tudor; children & spouses, son-Stacey & Julie Tudor; daughters-Lisa & Craig Sanford, Leigh Ann & Nick Smith, and Raechelle Tudor; grandchildren-Garrett Tudor, Austin Long, Whitney Sanford, Ansley Smith, Breanna Fletcher, & Coleson Smith; sisters & spouses-Patricia & Roger Dawson and Rose & Greg Espy; all Family & Friends.

MRS. VIVIAN DUVALL WARREN, age 88, of Trion, GA passed away Friday morning, (June 10, 2011), in a Rome hospital. Mrs. Warren was born in Floyd County, GA on September 5, 1922, a daughter of the late Arthur S. and Emma Hardeman Duvall and was preceded in death by brothers Harlan G. Duvall and Eugene Duvall, and sisters Bonnie Woods and Elene King. Mrs. Warren was a member of Trion First Baptist Church and was retired from Barwick Mills.

Surviving are two sisters- Lucille Duvall Clark of Rome, and Betty Duvall (James W.) Herndon of Marietta. Three brothers Alvin R. (Helen) Duvall of Cave Spring; Archie J. (Carol) Duvall, Sr. of Rome; Roy Duvall of Rome; Sister-in-law Jo Ann Duvall of Rome.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 13, 2011, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. MRS. WINIFRED MILLER DOSTER, age 100, of Summerville, Georgia died Friday, June 3, 2011, at Oak View Nursing Center in Summerville. Winifred was born April 7, 1911, in Ellijah, Georgia, to Margaret Elizabeth Holt (1872-1960) and Wesley Jones Miller (1865-1946). She was a 1936 graduate from the University of Georgia in Home Economics. She worked several years as a Home Economics teacher, then for the Farmers Home Administration until she married George Edward Doster (1900-1985) in 1946. She returned to work for the Department of Family and Children’s Services until retirement in 1965 at age 65.

Surviving are her daughter, Mary Alice Parker, Summerville; two sons, George Doster, Jr., Kentucky, and Jim Doster, Carrollton, Georgia; five grandchildren-David Doster, Angie Doster, Jacob Doster, Desmond Parker, and Andrew Parker two great grandchildren-Tyler Doster and Drake Doster.

Funeral services will be held 4:00 P.M. Sunday, June 5th, from Horizon Baptist Fellowship with the Reverend Jimmy Bryant and Doctor Jerry Mahan officiating, interment in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. MRS. JIMMIE DUKE JONES, age 72, of Lyerly, GA passed away Wednesday evening,(June 1, 2011), at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Jones was born July 9, 1938 in Trion, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Charles Clifford and Mary John Ellenburg Fowler. She was retired from Georgia Rug Mill Data Precessing and was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church. Her husband, Max Roland Jones, preceded her in death January 8, 2005.

Survivors include a Daughter and Son-in-law, Lynn and Mike Stull; Son and Daughter-in-law, Tony and Denise Jones; Grandchildren, Morgan Stull, Summer Jones and Rose Jones all of Lyerly.

MR. LARRY JUNIOR GENTRY, age 61, of Gaylesville, Alabama formerly of Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at the residence. Born in Summerville, Georgia on February 1, 1950 He was a son of the late Raymond and Elizabeth Cochran Gentry. Mr. Gentry was retired from the Needling Department of Mohawk Mills.

MRS. GUSSIE M. STANSELL, age 84, of Trion, Georgia, Teloga Community, passed away Wednesday morning at her residence. Born on March 5, 1927 in Walker County, She was a Daughter of the late N. J. Pettyjohn, Sr. and Julia Jones Pettyjohn. Mrs. Stansell was a member of Shattuck Blvd. Church of Christ and was preceded in death by her husband the late John Wesley Stansell.

MR. ORVILLE ROBERT “DOC” WHITE, age 74, of White Oak Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at his residence. Born in Chattooga County,Ga., Berryton Community on January 13, 1937, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Dovie Mae Tuggle White. Mr. White was a Self Employed Contractor and attended Summerville Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Cochran White, of Summerville. Two daughters: Robbie Baker Dooley of Summerville and Becky White Humphrey of Hixon, TN. One son, Orville Robert White, Jr. of Rome. A brother, Daniel L. White of Fort Oglethorpe, GA and Special Buddy “Shorty”. Six Grandchildren, Nine Great-Grandchildren, one Great Great Granddaughter, several nieces and nephews also survive.

MR. ROY LEE HUNTER, age 62, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning in Chickmauga, following an extended illness. A native Chattooga Countian He was born to the late Ed Hunter and Florence Hartline on January 21, 1949. Mr. Hunter was retired from the City of Summerville Water Department after 32 years of service. Preceding Him in death are a sister-the late Martha Hunter, brother-the late Robert Hunter, and step mother-the late Bonnie Hunter.

Surviving are daughter-Kimberlee Lovett of Chickmauga; son-Michael Hunter of Lyerly; sisters-Fran Mount of Pisga, Al., and Virginia Wade of Summerville; brother-Edward Hunter of Subligna; grandchildren-Brandon Hunter, Dillon Hunter, Meaghan Lovett, Lean Lovett, Amber Lovett, Preston Wade, Todd Wade, and Adrian Wade; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. ODESSA "Bea" WILSON, age 90, of Summerville, GA, Teloga Community, passed away Tuesday, morning, May 10, 2011. A native of Dekalb County, AL, she was born on April 21, 1921, a daughter of the late Mark A. and Eliza Boozer Lacy. Mrs. Wilson was a Home Maker, member of the Eastern Star, and a Member of Summerville First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. “Bill” Wilson, on June 17, 2009.

Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law W. A. and Claudia Ann Wilson of Ackworth, GA; and Thomas Harold and Jean McCain Wilson of Roswell, GA. Grandchildren, Nicole Kathleen Wilson, Thomas Andrew Wilson and wife Aliya; Jennifer Leigh Wilson Jimenez and husband Angel. A Brother Dallas Lacy, several nieces and nephews also survive.

MRS. EVA CAROL McFALLS COLLINS, age 74, of Collins-Youngblood Road-Armuchee, Georgia, Little Sand Mt. Community, passed away Wednesday at Her residence. She was born in Cohutta, Georgia on March 21, 1937, a daughter of the late San and Margaret Hunsucker McFalls. Mrs. Collins was Valedictorian of NW Whitfield High School Class of 1955, received her B.S. degree in Home Economics from Berry College in 1959 and received double Masters Degrees in 1980. She was Gilmer Co. Extension Agent, Georgia Power home economist, Aging Specialist with the Coosa Valley Planning Commission, and afterward She taught school in Hall Co., Gordon Co., and Lyerly Elementary in Chattooga Co. She was married September 15, 1963 to Ben F. Collins, who preceded her in death on August 31, 1996; Mrs. Collins was also preceded in death by a brother the late San Maurice McFalls, Sr..

Surviving are daughters & spouses-Carol C. & Jim Bradfield of LaGrange and Allora C. & Robert Linderman of Rome; sons & spouses-Franklin S. & Kim Collins of Huntsville, AL. and Daniel K. & Jennifer Collins of Houlton, ME.; grandchildren- Joshua Bradfield, Emalee Collins, Eston Collins, Collin San Linderman, and Jared Cook; sister-Wilda M. MR. HUGH G. MURDOCK, age 80, of Armuchee, Georgia, Little Sand Mt. Community, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2011, in a Rome hospital following a sudden attack. Born in Chattooga County Georgia on March 23, 1931 He was a son of the late Gordon William and Rose Lee Rosser Murdock. Mr. Murdock was retired from Berry College Maintenance Department and was a Deacon of South Summerville Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, the late Rev. Billy Murdock.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years Violet King Murdock, Two sons and daughters-in-law Don and Anita Murdock of Armuchee; Wayne and Angie Murdock of Pooler, GA; Sister and brother-in-law Kay and Byron Yarbrough of Summerville; Sister-in-law Cindy Murdock; Three grandchildren: Melanie (Jason)Lackey, Holly Murdock and Randy Murdock. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

MRS. MARY ANN BARTNICK, age 73, of Farmersville Road-Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2011, in a Rome hospital. A native of Clarkston, Georgia She was born to the late Thomas Weston and Kate Spivey Batchelor on October 15, 1937. Mrs. Bartnick was retired from Metropolitan Insurance Company and attended Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving are Her husband-Jon G. Bartnick, Sr.; sons and daughter-in-law-Jon G. Bartnick, Jr. and Alison along with granddaughter-Holly Ann of Roswell, Georgia and Kenneth E. Bartnick of San Antonio, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

MITCHELL

MISS IDA LORETTA MITCHELL, age 95, of Bill Mitchell Road-Summerville, Georgia, Gore Community, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2011. Born in Polk County, Georgia on November 24, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Lumpkin Wade and Sarah Herring Mitchell. Miss Mitchell was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and until retirement in 1980 served as Principal at City Park Elementary in the Dalton, Georgia School system.

She is survived by her sister Mildred Padgett of Calhoun and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Pauline Mitchell, Helen Mitchell , Lamar (Bud) Mitchell , Howard Mitchell , Bill Mitchell, Ann Morgan, and Miriam Harper.

Miss Ida attended Young Harris College, received her BA from Georgia Southern and her Masters in Education from Emory University. She taught in LaFayette and in Dalton where she was principal of City Park Elementary. At City Park she also taught art and many of her students win prizes in state-wide competitions. She also was a avid supporter of reading and she began a very innovative children’s literature author in residence program at her school. Several well-known authors came to Dalton and spent a week inspiring students to be life-long lovers of books.

Her many nieces and nephews also learned from her. She often gave them books as gifts and she discussed favorite books with them. Many of those books have now been passed to a second and even third generation in the Mitchell family. Also, she taught them the importance and joys of family by hosting a Thanksgiving family reunion at her home for almost thirty years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made either to Bethel United Methodist Church in Gore where Ida was a life time member, or to the Methodist Children’s Home, Columbia Drive, Decatur, Georgia.

Visitation will be on Saturday, April 30th, at Bethel United Methodist Church with the service to follow at 2:00, interment in Summerville Cemetery.

MRS. CORNELIA “NEAL” SMITH, age 83, of Summerville, formerly of Aragon, Georgia went home to be with Jesus on Sunday, April 17, 2011. She was born on January 1, 1928 in Rome, Georgia, the wife of the late Pastor Roy H. Smith.

Mrs. Smith was a dedicated Christian, devoted Pastor’s wife, singer, musician, soul winner and Bible teacher. She was married to Bro. Roy H. Smith for 61 years. She and Bro. Roy ministered for over 60 years at many different churches, nursing homes, jails, and through the Upward Look Radio Ministry. She was a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother who loved her family dearly.

Mrs. Smith is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Roy H. Smith; three brothers, Edward Bradfield, Leonard Bradfield and Wicker Bradfield; a sister, Beatrice Marks; and a grandson, Chris Blansit.

She is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Grimes and husband, Allen, of Aragon; four sons, Samuel Smith and wife Joyce, of Piedmont, AL., David Smith & wife Loretta, of Rome, Pastor Joel Smith & wife Karen, of Cedartown, and Timothy Smith & wife Martha Ann, of Trion; a sister, Joyce Freeman, of Rome; a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

The home going celebration for Sister Neal will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at two o’clock in the afternoon at Rome Baptist Temple with Pastor Billy Goolesby, Pastor Joel A. Smith, and Bro. Allen Grimes officiating. Interment will follow in the Aragon Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. at the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, Summerville, Georgia. Mrs. Smith will also lie in state Wednesday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at the Rome Baptist Temple. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. A native Chattooga Countian, She was born in Berryton, Georgia on May 26, 1918, a daughter of the late Hines and Lizzie Kinsey Warren. Mrs. Kellett attended the Horizon Baptist Fellowship, was retired from Harriett-Henderson Mills and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Kellett, Sr., daughter, Susan Marie Kellett, a son, Ralph Kellett, Jr., and brothers, Jack and Archie Warren.

MS. YVONNE McCULLOUGH THOMPSON, age 78, of Highway #337, Menlo, Georgia passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011, in a Rome health care. Born in Alabama on December 20, 1932, a daughter of the late Jesse R. and Leona Crowe McCullough. Ms. Thompson graduated from Menlo Schools, West Georgia College, and the University of Georgia, was retired Educator teaching for 35 years primarily in Chattooga County at Menlo and North Summerville Elementary Schools.

Surviving are daughters and son-in-law-Ellen Thompson of Rome and Susan Thompson & Don McGukin of Tupelo, Mississippi; son-Coleman Thompson of Menlo; granddaughter-Aurora Thompson of Johns Island, South Carolina; great grandson-Rowen Thompson.

WILLIAM R. “BILL” SHAMBLIN, age 80, of Highway #337-Summerville, Georgia, Teloga Community, passed away Monday afternoon at his residence following an extended illness, he was born on April 23, 1930, a son of the late Luther A. and Georgia Carver Shamblin. He was preceded in death by brothers Mack A., James L., Guy A., Robert L., and Charles C. Shamblin and sister Annie M. Shamblin. Mr. Shamblin was a member of Beersheba Presbyterian Church, where he served as Trustee, and an ordained Elder. He was presented the honor of Elder Emeritus. He organized a Boy Scout Troop in the Teloga Community and served as Scout Master for a number of years. He retired from Mount Vernon Mills, Trion, GA in 1995.

Surviving are His wife of 60 years Ruby Jo Keen Shamblin; son and daughter-in-law William Douglas and Keitha Cash Shamblin, Sr. Grandchildren and spouses, Tonya R. and Kevin Woods, and William Douglas and Beverly Shamblin, Jr.; Great Grandchildren: Brianna, Billy and Ben Woods.

A daughter of the late Sam and Lois Golden Westbrook, Ms. Hensley was born September 10, 1938, was Baptist by faith and retired from Mohawk Industries and Walmart. Ms. Hensley was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Westbrook and Freddie Westbrook.

Survivors include one Son and Daughter-in-law, David and Doris Wilson of Menlo; Two Brothers, Dartey Westbrook of Trion, and Phillip Westbrook of Armuchee. Mr. Stricklin was born January 3, 1942 in Savannah, Tennessee, a son of the late Sam C. and Frances Wisdom Stricklin. He was owner and operator of Jim’s Used Cars and was Baptist by faith. Besides his parents, Mr. Stricklin was preceded in death by three brothers- William Dewey Stricklin, Sammy J. Stricklin, Sr. and Grant J. Stricklin.

Surviving are his wife Janice Stricklin, two daughters- Jami Stricklin and Josette Stricklin Radford both of Summerville; Three sons and daughter-in-law- Jimmy C. Stricklin, Jr. of Summerville; Jonathan and Tonya Stricklin of Rock Spring, GA,; and Jason Stricklin of Summerville. Two Sisters- Molly Ragan and Shirley Willingham both of Summerville. He was born on October 7, 1928 in Chattooga County, Georgia, a son of the late Robert Loren Bowman, Sr. and Mildred Foye Powell Bowman,. Mr. Bowman enjoyed Golf, played in the Textile League Softball, and for several years coached Little League Baseball. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, a Veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Marines, and was retired District Accounting Supervisor for Georgia Power Company. Mr. Bowman was preceded in death by his brother the late Robert L. Bowman, Jr. on October 9, 2010.

Born in Americus, Georgia on September 1, 1918 He was the son of the late John Thornton Stubbs, Sr. and Ann McWhorter Stubbs. Mr. Stubbs was an elder and member of Beersheba Presbyterian Church, graduated from Presbyterian College, was a Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army, and worked for the U.S. Postal Service serving as Summerville Post Master for thirty four years. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Jean Thomas Stubbs.

MRS. SYBLE J. MILLER, age 66, of Curran Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday (December 23, 2010) morning in a Rome hospital following a sudden attack. She was born March 30, 1944 in Chattooga County, Georgia to the late J. D. and JoAnn Ledford Hunter. Mrs. Miller was a member of Dry Valley Baptist Church and a Homemaker.

Surviving are Her husband-Thomas Miller; children-Debbie Warnock of Summerville, Sheila Morrison of Summerville, Karen Madaris of Chickmauga, Thomas Miller, II of Trion, Ricky Miller of Ft. She was born in Packlett, S.C. on December 16, 1921, a daughter of the late Fred Reynolds. Mrs. Mann was a member of Teloga Baptist Church, was retired from the weave shop of Mt. Vernon Mills, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Arthur Mann.

Surviving are 2 sons-Larry Mann of Summerville and Wilson Mann of Trion; nine Grandchildren, several Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive.

A native of DeKalb County, Alabama She was born to the late John and Mary Holmes Keef on February 4,1919. Mrs. Morrison was a member of West Berryton Faith Temple and a Homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Hollis Morrison in 1983, sisters-the late Jo Kirby and Juanita Porter, brothers-the late Jess Keef, Tom Keef, and John B. Keef.

Born on September 14, 1929 She was a daughter of the late James Alexander and Anna Hammer Duff. Mrs. Elrod was retired from the Georgia Rug Mill, a member of First Presbyterian Church, PCA, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Ralph W. Elrod on November 21, 1981 and a brother the late Jimmy W. Duff, Jr. on September 14, 2010.

Born in Flintstone, Georgia on June 1, 1927 She was a daughter of the late Homer and Edna Beaty Hardeman. Mrs. Whisenant was preceded in death by her husband, John Alvin Whisenant, three brothers-J.B. Hardeman, Winfred Hardeman, and Edward Hardeman.

Surviving are two brothers-Rod C. Hardeman of Summerville and Homer Hardeman of Douglasville; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Henderson Haygood on June 12, 1926. Ms. Haygood graduated from Jacksonville State Teachers College in 1947 and started teaching in the Trion School System and retired after 39 years of service. She was a member of Trion United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by husband-Jack Thomas Williams, son-Greg Williams, sister-Jean Witt, and a brother-Willard Lancaster.

MR. JOHN MARLIN CRANE, age 60, of Gore-Subligna Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning in a Rome hospital. A son of the late John Roy and Dorothy Pierce Crane, Mr. Crane a loving husband, father, and was affectionately known as PoP Pa by his grandchildren. He was born in Floyd County on July 30, 1950, a member and Sunday School Teacher of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and was retired from AT&T.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Hawkins Crane; children and spouses- Ben & Anamaria Crane of White, GA., Matt & Christina Crane of Rome, Tasha & Lester Jenkins of Cartersville, and Kaela Hayes of Colorado Springs, Colorado. MRS. MARGIE SIMMONS PURCELL, age 94, on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, went home to be with the Lord. She was born October 2, 1916 to the late Ernest Simmons and Rachel Jones Simmons. She was a Charter employee of Best Mfg. Company in Menlo, Georgia, a member of the Best Silver Club, and a member of the Menlo Church of Christ. Among her many talents was the life long ability to make beautiful quilts, which she shared with her family and friends. She was able to enjoy this talent until her last days. She is the widow of the late Frank Eugene Purcell to whom she was married for 57 years; in addition to parents she was preceded in death by a son the late Jimmy Purcell, four Brothers, and four Sisters.

She was born in Walker County, Georgia in April 21, 1927, a daughter of the late George Washington and Mattie Lenor Wilson Henry. She was a member of the Menlo Church of Christ, a retired nurse, and in March, 2010 Ms. Henry received the G.L.O.W. award from the Georgia Commission on Women for her ongoing work with recovering substance abusers. She was preceded in death by a son , the late David Earl Pettyjohn.

She was born in McKinney, Texas on November 27, 1920 to the late John D. and Elizabeth Champion Freeman. Mrs. Myers graduated from Baylor School of Nursing with her Registered Nurse degree, where she met her future husband-Lieutenant Graves T. Myers, III-they were married Christmas Eve, 1941. Mrs. Myers was a member of the Summerville Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter-the late Joyce Lynne Myers Wood, four sisters, and four brothers.

Surviving are son and wife-Graves T. (Susan) Myers, IV of Hartwell, GA.; former son-in-law-Don Wood of Severna Park, MD.; grandchildren-Andy Wood, Dr. Cindy Huffaker, Samuel Trenholm Myers, Elizabeth Manley; 6 Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews.

Mrs. Bullard was a member of Lyerly First Baptist Church and along with her husband, the late John H. Bullard, owned and operated Bullard Processing Plant, formerly on the Lyerly highway-Summerville. Mrs. Bullard was also preceded in death by a nephew- the late John W. Green.

He was preceded in death by parents-James Howard and Evelyn Wheeles Bryan, son-David Hartline, sister-Brenda Crowe, and grandparents-Mr. & Mrs. Tinney Warren and Mr. & Mrs. Marvin Bryan.

MR. ROBERT L. BOWMAN, JR., age 83, of Perry Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (October 8, 2010) evening in a Rome hospital. A native Chattoogaian He was born to the late Robert L. Bowman, Sr. and Foye Powell Bowman on May 27, 1927. Mr. Bowman was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, a Veteran of WW II serving in the Marine Corps Aviation, and was retired Supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service in Summerville.

MRS. CLAUDINE WILSON FOWLER, age 91, of Hernando, Florida formerly of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, October 4, 2010, in Inverness, Florida. She was born in Lineville, Alabama to the late James Aubrey Wilson, Sr. and Lena Ada Eva Gibson Wilson on June 14, 1919. Mrs. Fowler was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hernando, Fl., retired retail sales clerk, and was preceded in death by her two husbands’ the late Ernest “Slim” Bowman and Fred Fowler, son-the late Ernest (Tony) Bowman, grandson the late Douglas Bush, and siblings-the late Gibson Waylen Wilson, the late Juanita Wilson, the late Ewert Wilson, the late James A. Wilson, Jr., and the late Lorenzo “Pete” Wilson.

MRS. ANNE OGLESBY BENNETT, age 79, of Martin Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday afternoon, (September 28, 2010) in a Rome hospital. She was born in Walker County on August 18, 1931, a daughter of the late James Hamilton and Arvie Ellie Hartman Oglesby. Mrs. Bennett was secretary for sixty-one years for Bobby Lee Cook, attorney-at-law. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Archie B. Bennett on May 8, 1990, two brothers H. Lynn Oglesby and James Oglesby, and sister Juanita Oglesby Davis McCool. Mrs. Bennett was Past Matron and Secretary of Summerville Chapter Order of Eastern Star #434 and Grand Deputy of District 2; she was Secretary of the Chattooga Co. Democratic Association, and Secretary of the Summerville High School Alumni Association. On Law Day, May 7, 1990 Mrs. Bennett was presented the Liberty Bell Award by the Chattooga Co. Bar Association.

Survivors include one daughter, Marthanne Bennett Casey of Oak Ridge, TN; three sons, Richard Lynn Bennett of Lawrenceville, GA ; Archie B. “Skip” Bennett, Jr. of Canton, GA and J. Michael Bennett of Summerville. Nine Grandchildren: Amanda Lynne Bennett Lanham, Laci Deah Bennett, Michael Lance Bennett, Joshua Charles Bennett, Michael Caleb Bennett, Matthew Ryan Bennett, Joseph Michael Bennett, Jeffrey Alan Casey, II and William Bennett Casey. MR. PAUL BROOME, age 88, of Espy Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday (September 28, 2010) morning in the local nursing home. Mr. Broome was born in Fulton County, GA on January 10, 1922, a son of the late William Monroe and Ola Tinney Broome. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in World War II and was retired from Mt. Vernon-Riegel Mills. Mr. Broome was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife Mattie Lee Broome of Summerville; One daughter Peggy Tucker of Rome; Three sisters, Lou Ellen Durham and Pauline Davis of Summerville and Inez Hardeman of Douglasville, GA. One brother Tommy Broome of Lyerly. Five Grandchildren and Twelve Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

MR. DAVID EUGENE GLASS, age 59, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday (September 27, 2010) in a Winchester, Tennessee hospital following an extended illness. A Trion, Georgia native He was born May 21, 1951 to Howard Glass and the late Frances Louise Crawford Glass. Mr. Glass was Church of God by Faith, formerly worked in the Security Department of Mt. Vernon Mills, and was in the U. S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and U.S. Army Reserve, serving in Viet Nam and Desert Storm. He was preceded in death by a son the late David Glass, Jr.

Surviving are His wife-Sherry Dee Glass; daughters-Shannon Lumley of Ames, Iowa and Ann Gruber of Cleveland, Tennessee, and Rebecca Sparks of Summerville; father-Howard Glass of Trion; sister-Elaine Miller of

MR. GRAVES T. MYERS, III, age 90, of Hartwell, Georgia former longtime resident of Summerville passed away Wednesday morning,(September 22, 2010) at his residence. A native of Summerville, Georgia Mr. Myers was born to the late Graves T. Myers, Jr. and Beatrice Thomas Myers on December 9, 1919. He was a member of the Summerville Presbyterian Church and was a U.S. Air Force Officer retiring in the rank of Colonel in 1963 after some 24 years of service. Mr. Myers was preceded in death by a daughter the late Joyce Lynn Wood.

Vernon-Riegel Mills and was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years Inez Brown Bramlett, and siblings Mary Ellen Bramlett Phillips, Julie Ann Bramlett Austin, Miles Bramlett, Farris Bramlett, Calvin Bramlett, and Emmett Bramlett, and 2 Nieces.

Mr. James Walter (Jimmy) Duff, Jr., passed away at Floyd Medical Center on Tuesday, September 14, following five months of illness.

He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 30, 1928, the son of the late James A. and Anna Bess Duff. He graduated in 1946 from Alcoa High School in Alcoa, Tennessee. Mr. Duff served in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict.

For over 50 years, Jimmy served the community as owner and operator of Duff’s Flowers and Gifts, selling the business and retiring in 1997. He was an active member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church, Summerville. A charter member, Mr. Duff was instrumental in the founding of the church in 1982, and the building construction in 1988.

Surviving are sisters, Ada Margaret Duff Elrod of Summerville and Jean Duff Goebel and husband, Wales Goebel, of Birmingham, Alabama; nephews Bill Elrod, Fayetteville, GA; Mike Goebel, Steve Goebel and Stan Goebel of Birmingham; great nephews Brandon Elrod, Rome, GA; Justin Goebel, Jordan Goebel, Birmingham, AL, and Dallas Goebel, Louisville, KY; great niece, Caitlyn Goebel of Atlanta, GA.

Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Summerville, at 3:00 PM, Friday, September 17. Officiating will be Rev. Greg King and Rev. Wales Goebel. Pall bearers will be nephews and great-nephew, and friend and care-giver Wayne Ashley. Mr. Duff will be buried in Green Hills Memory Gardens.

MS. SARA ALEXANDER PHILLIPS, age 75, of Mahan Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday (September 4, 2010) at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born to the late Thomas Earl and Belle Talbert Alexander on April 17, 1935. Ms. Phillips was a member of North Summerville Baptist Church and a Master Cosmetologist. For many years She coached girls softball, little league baseball, and basketball. She was preceded in death by a son the late James Stanley Perkins.

Mrs. Carter was born in Chattooga County on December 12, 1920, a daughter of the late Josh Lee and Mary Lou Busby Bennett, a retired textile worker with Best Mfg. Co., and was a member of South Commerce Church of Christ. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by her husband the late Simon David Carter; two daughters- Caroline Carter and Linda Williamson; granddaughter, Heather Carter; great granddaughters, Brianna Carter and Mariah Carter; sister, Olene Bennett; brothers, Oscar Bennett and Buddy Bennett. To her children and all Family, she was the most loving and caring mother in all the world. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful mother who was always there for us. She gave of herself not only to family, but to anyone she could be a help to. We thank God for letting her stay here almost 90 years and then taking her to her mansion in heaven.

Mrs. Coons was a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church and retired telephone operator for Southern Bell. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Charles Raymond Coons, grandson-the late Jim McCarley, sisters-the late Gladys Groover and Mary Paxton, and brothers-the late Bud (Willie) and Freeman Anderson.

Mr. Pickle was retired truck driver for Ragland Oil Company and was preceded in death by his wife the late Helen Rosebud Willingham Pickle, son-the late Billy Don Pickle, and brother-the late Wilburn Pickle.

MRS. PEGGY MAYNARD, age 75, of Bitttings Avenue-Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010, at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born to the late Frank and Lula Josephene Chastain McGraw on March 4, 1935. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of God.

Surviving are husband-Thomas Maynard; daughter-Pam Henderson of Summerville; sons-Marty Middleton of Summerville and Joey Middleton of Trion; sisters-JoAnn Hughes of Summerville, Irene Horton of LaFayette, and Coleen Waits of Tampa, FL.; 12 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

CAMPBELL

MR. GERALD CAMPBELL, age 73, of Kennesaw, Georgia passed away Thursday, June 24, 2010) at his residence. A native of Trion, Georgia, Mr. Campbell was born to the late Andrew and Etta Mae Westbrook Campbell on January 8, 1937. He attended the Kennesaw United Methodist Church, was a U.S. Army Veteran, and was retired from General Motors Corporation.

Surviving are His wife-Peggy Colbert Campbell; sons-Phil Campbell and Todd Campbell both of Kennesaw and Torry Campbell of Acworth; sister-Edna Swanson of Summerville; Nine Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 27th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. G. J. Chandler officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery. Active Pallbearers-Phil Campbell, Todd Campbell, Torry Campbell, Derek Colbert, and Matthew Owens. MRS. MATTIE LOU YOUNG, age 90, of Perry Road-Armuchee, Georgia passed away Monday (June 21, 2010) evening in a Rome hospital. Mrs. Young was born in Centre, Al. on October 3, 1919.

Surviving are sons, Dale Young and Steve Young, both of Armuchee. Four Grandsons: Michael Young, Mark Young, Jason Young and Adam Young, all of Armuchee. Five Great Grand Children: Skyler Young, Dylan Young, Destiny Young, Aaliyah Young and Clay Young, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. from the Silver Hill Baptist Church with Dr. John Hayes officiating, interment in Bethel Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Jason Ware, Timothy Cook, Sam Brown, Mark Brown, Jimmy Riley and Johnny Riley. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 till 8:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Mrs. Young will also lie in state at the Church Thursday from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service.

MR. JOHNNY WILLIAM TAPP, age 64, of Dogwood Circle-Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010, evening at his residence. A native Chattooga Countian He was born to the late Charlie William and Bertha Baldwin Tapp on August 17, 1945. Mr. Tapp was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and retired fixer from Carron Mills in LaFayette. He was preceded in death by sister-the late Betty Slayton, brother-the late Horace Tapp, & grandson-Timothy Hall.

Surviving are His wife-Doris Tapp; daughters and spouse-Rebecca & Tim Hall, Faye Tapp Pruitt & fiancée-Tommy Johnson all of Summerville; brother-Charles Tapp of Calhoun; sister-Sara Wester of Summerville; grandchildren-Justin & Ashley Tapp, Alexis, Harley, & Tapanga Hall & Casey Beaver; great grandchildren-Colton & Braden Tapp, & Bailey Beaver; god children-Christy & Amanda Price & Kandy Elrod; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. HENRY E. CHAPPELEAR, age 89, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Friday (June 4, 2010) at his residence. He was born to the late William Richard and Rosa Dell Estes Chappelear on November 5, 1920. Mr. Chappelear, a prominent Chattooga County Farmer, was a member of the Menlo United Methodist Church, a Veteran of WW II and was preceded in death by his wife the late Lena Mae Chappelear.

Surviving are sister-Helen Hudson of Rome; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday (June 6th) at 2:00 p.m. from the Menlo United Methodist Church with Rev. J. B. McNeil officiating, interment in Green Hills Memory Gardens. . The Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Saturday from 6 until 8 P.M., Mr. Chappelear will lie in state at the Church from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service Sunday.

MRS. FAYE BELLE JOHNSON, age 89, of Lake Wanda Reita Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday (June 2, 2010) evening in a Rome hospital. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia, She was born on June 26, 1920 to the late T. C. and Sally Warren Whitley. Mrs. Johnson attended the North Summerville Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband the late Ben F. Johnson, Sr. and a great granddaughter the late Bailey Henry.

Surviving are 2 daughters-Brenda Chambers of Summerville and Gail Henry of New Mexico; grandchildren-Donna Smith, Tim Henry, Donnie Henry, Amy Ward, and Mary Beth Morrison; ten Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, (June 5th) at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Russell officiating, interment in Berryton Cemetery, Active Pallbearers Mike Ward, Micah Hughes, Mason Hughes, Ray Lee, and Aubrey Newton..
