MARTINEZ

MR. JOHN MARTINEZ, age 90, of Rome, Georgia, formerly of Chattooga County, Georgia, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2022, in a Rome hospital. Mr. Martinez was born in Denver, Colorado on June 2, 1931, a son of the late John Joseph Martinez and Flora Sena Martinez. He was a Veteran of the United States Marines serving in Korea and was a member, former choir director, and Sunday school teacher of the New Bethel Baptist Church. In addition to His Parents, John was preceded in death by his wife the late Juanita Massey Martinez.

Surviving is a brother, Greg Martinez of Michigan; several Nieces and Nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

GORDON

Frances Padgett Gordon, born in Chattooga County, Georgia and a long-time resident of Orlando, Florida, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at the age of 93. She is pre-deceased by her husband, George Edd Gordon, with whom she operated Gordon's Leasing and Transport out of Orlando. She was a member of Delaney St. Baptist Church and spent many years following retirement working at their Pre-school. Frances loved gardening and was a volunteer at Harry P. Leu Gardens for many years. Survivors include her sister Nelda Gayler Smith, sister-in-law Martha Sue Speer, daughters Dianne (Mac) Gifford and Gwen (Jim) O'Sullivan, son Edd (Becky) Gordon, grandchildren Heather (Ritchard) Baus, Heath (Amanda) Gifford, Mindy (Randall) Gilbert, Edd Gordon, Jr., Katie (Brent) Wainscott, Kelci and Ryan Mauldin, and her wonderful great-grandchildren and great-great grandchild.

Graveside services to be held June 18th at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Gore, Georgia, her childhood church and where she and George Edd were married. Now they will be together again. Interment by Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, Summerville Georgia.

RUSH

MR. GAYLON L. RUSH, age 83, of Roslyn Lane, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2022, in a Rome hospital.

A native of Trion, Georgia, He was born to the late Otha and Thelma Rush, on April 26, 1939. Mr. Rush was a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church, a Veteran of the U. S. Army, and was retired from commercial finance.

Surviving are daughters, Debra Koertge (Richard), Linda Barbagallo (Sal), and Barbara Schafer (Kurt); son, John Rush; sister, Marilyn Wood; grandchildren, Natalie Whigham, Laura Bargagallo, Ashley Fred, Christopher Koertge, Christian Schafer, and Grace Schafer; great granddaughter, Olivia Whigham; niece, Susan Murdock (Todd); great nieces, Graci Murdock and Chloe Murdock; special friend, Norma Ables.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 26th, at 1:30 P.M. from the Summerville First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Mason and Dr. Sean Wegener officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 noon until 1:30 P.M. at the Church.

 MRS. BARBARA DIANNE BLACKWELL, age 75 of Summerville, Georgia went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, May 15^th, 2022. She was born on November 3, 1946, to the late Buford and Mary Ruth Smith.  Mrs. Blackwell was employed with Mohawk Industries for 25 years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, admired by many and known to all simply as Nanny.  She loved sitting on her front porch enjoying her two cats and feeding her squirrels and birds. She was a member of Berryton Baptist Church.  In addition to Her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Odell Johnston; brothers, Wayne, Joe, and Martin Smith; sisters, Lou Payne, Faye Buffington, and Redonna Green.

 

Surviving are her husband of 58 loving years of marriage, Bob Blackwell; three daughters, May Ann (Donny) Blackwell, Karen (Steve) Odom, and Renee Blackwell; 5 grandchildren, Brittney (Michael) Nicholson, Dustin Blackwell, Erika (Keith) Simmons, Sara Jo Haney and Jacob Odom; 7 great grandchildren, Molly and Evie Nicholson, Jet Johnson, Dartey Robert and Sutton Grace Blackwell and Sophia and Greyson Simmons; sister, Cindy (Jim) Cotten,  along with several nieces and nephews.

DEWAYNE COPELAND, AGE 74 of Washington Street, passed away Friday, May 13th, 2022, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Sand Rock, Alabama on September 26, 1947, son of the late Martin Copeland and Melissa Mitchell Copeland. Mr. Copeland was a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church and retired Electrician from Georgia Power.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Lenderman Copeland; daughters, Holly (Joe) Money, Angela (Matt) Veitch, Melissa (Kevin) Queen. Amanda Peters; sons, Lane Copeland, Ryan Copeland; sister, Betty Ann Lively; Grandchildren, Caleb Veitch, Gracelyn Veitch, Alexandra Peters, Thomas Peters, Alex Queen, Landon Henson, Jackson Copeland, Dayton Copeland; one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 16, 2022, at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home from 1 until 2 p.m. There will be a Private Family Graveside Service to follow visitation.  MRS. SHIRLEY MAXEY, age 88, of Martha Berry Highway, Rome, Georgia, passed away Thursday evening in a Rome Hospital, following an unexpected illness.

She was born in Summerville, Georgia on November 27, 1933, to the late James Thomas and Della Mae Allen Holt.  Mrs. Maxey was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was retired Teacher for the Floyd Training Center in Rome.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Dewey Jesse Maxey, a son, the late Michael Cavin Maxey, and a brother, the late Tommy Holt.

 

            Surviving are her children, Dewey Alan and Carol Maxey and Sonya Dawn and Greg Montgomery; grandchildren, Jesse and Justin Montgomery, James Maxey, and Bethany Mooneyhan; Eight Great Grandchildren; sister, Bobbie Jones; brother, Vernon Holt; daughter-in-law, Tori Underwood; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

 MR. THOMAS CLEVELAND (T.C.) PLEDGER, age 88, of Grand Eight Lane, Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 11, 2022, at his residence.   A native of Boaz, Alabama, he was born to the late Herman John Thomas Pledger and Bessie Turner Pledger on September 30,1933.   Mr. Pledger was retired Owner and Operator of Pledger Automotive, was member and deacon of New Beginnings Baptist Church and was choir Director in Baptist Church for over 40 years. Mr. Pledger was a Veteran of Korea serving in the United States Army, was a member and past Master of Alpine Lodge #211 F & AM, was past President of the Chattooga County Shrine Club, and a member of Gideons International.   He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Dorothy Beatrice Dooley Pledger on August 26, 2021, his parents, a daughter, the late Reda Gail Pledger, sisters, the late Betty Johnson and Gay Nell Shaw, and a brother, the late James Lewis (Pat) Pledger.

 

            Surviving are his daughter and spouse, Connie and Othell Stone; sons and spouses, Steve and Jill Pledger and Tommy and Kim Pledger; grandchildren, Amanda Long, Justin Stone, Leslie Boston, Brianna Stone, Zach Pledger, Lann Pledger, Trevor Pledger, and Natalie Burdick; Twenty Great Grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Bob) Pledger, Artis Pledger, and Bill Pledger.  Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

GLOVER

Honey Turley Glover aged 92 of Menlo, Georgia graduated to be with her Lord on Tuesday May 3rd at Seven Hills Place in Rome, GA.

Honey was born in Lindale GA to Comer and Martha Mathis Turley. She was a graduate of Rome High and a 1951 graduate of Shorter College (now Shorter University) where she earned a BA degree in Art. After graduation in 1951, she joined American Airlines as a flight attendant up until marriage in September of 1953 to a young US Air Force First Lieutenant Alex Glover (married for 66 years). She later taught art at East Rome Junior High and was an accomplished photographer. She was an early pioneer of infra-red aerial photography to locate buried historical artifacts which was used to locate artifacts for the Chieftains Museum in Rome which was the home of Principle Cherokee Chief John Ross who signed the New Echota Agreement for the Cherokee removal “The Trail of Tears”. She and her husband Alex Sr. where members and Elders of the Cloudland Presbyterian Church in Cloudland, GA. She was also a member of the William Marsh Chapter (Lafayette, GA) of the Daughters of The American Revolution and the Junior Service League of Rome, GA.

She was preceded in death by a daughter Laura Glover Whitton, a sister Patty Turley Foxworth, and her husband Alexander S. Glover, Sr.

She is survived by sons Alex Glover, Jr (Debbie) of Little Switzerland, NC, Sam Glover (Liz) of Menlo, GA, and a daughter Lynn Holloway (Mark) of Mentone AL, Grandchildren Blake Glover of Charlotte, NC, Evan Holloway of Armuchee, GA, Allison Holloway of Mentone, AL, Lainey Glover of Roswell, GA, and Kain Glover of Athens, GA.; a sister Joanne Bugg (Frank) of Big Canoe, GA and a brother Comer Turley, Jr. (Hennie) of Dalton, GA along with many nieces and nephews.

MR. BILLY H. HENDERSON, age 89, of Campbell Crescent Circle, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday morning, April 24, 2022, in a Rome hospital. A native of Dekalb County, Alabama, He was born to the late Tommy M. and Eva Mae Lowry Henderson on February 25, 1933. Mr. Henderson was a member of the Trion First Baptist Church, together with his late wife, Joyce (Joy) Holbrook Henderson, were owner/operators of Eagle Mfg. and Cambridge House Furniture in Summerville. He was also a member of Chattooga Mason Lodge #704, Chattooga Shrine Club, and Yaarab Shrine Temple Atlanta. Mr. Henderson, in addition to Parents and His Wife, was preceded in death by a sister, the late Glenda Lynn Weaver.

Surviving are daughter, Bonita Graham; son, Steve (Patti) Henderson; grandchildren, Lauren Ashley (Sean) Leming, Brandon Henderson, Breezy Henderson, and Cassie (Joe) Demari; great grandson, Liam Fleming; sisters, Nadine Fortner and Linda Kay Fincher; Nine Great Grandchildren, Two Great Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

SIMMONS

Robert Dean “Bob” Simmons, 71, passed away Saturday morning, April 16, 2022, at his Mentone, AL residence.

Bob was born on April 27, 1950, in El Dorado, Kansas, the son of the late Robert L. and Barbara (Hogoboom) Simmons.

Bob grew up in Butler County, Kansas surrounded by loving parents, 2 sisters, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. They were members of the First Baptist Church of El Dorado and involved in most activities, especially music. Because of his love of music and vocal abilities, he soon began singing for special events, in choirs and choral groups in church and school. After graduating from Circle High in Towanda, KS, he attended colleges locally and in Oklahoma and Texas. He graduated with a music degree from East Texas Baptist University and then worked as Minister of Music with various Baptist churches in the Texas - Kansas area. While growing up, and having been surrounded by large Sunday and holiday gatherings of family and relatives, Bob found an early interest in food and cooking, learning much from his mother and grandmothers. He and his wife, Judy, and daughters soon opened a restaurant and bakery. This eventually led to a position as a Food and Dining Director with several colleges.

 
Some years later, building on past interests in hospitality, Bob and partner Dan, became owners of the historic Antebellum Inn in Winchester, TN. Bob’s chef background was perfect for this venture. Guests from all over the US were hosted, especially many with children attending the University of the South at Sewanee, and some special wedding or anniversary occasions for local residents, and then many coming to visit the Jack Daniels distillery nearby in Lynchburg. When Dan’s mother passed, they returned to this area to care for his dad and aunt, choosing to settle in Mentone, on the east brow near Cloudland. Bob continued with his cooking interests, experimenting with new recipes, canning, winemaking, gardening, singing, music, and enjoying friends and neighbors. He loved his dogs, playing cards, and watching sci-fi programs on tv. But one of his important favorites was having his daughters and grandchildren come to visit, playing around him, jumping in the pool, and just watching them all have fun.

He is survived by his life partner of 20 years, Dan Hammond, Mentone, AL; four daughters: Stacie (Reed) Corley, Lexington, SC, Julie (Billy) Foreback, Williamsburg, VA, Leslie (Blake) Martin, Lugoff, SC, and Ashlie (Davey) Neil, West Columbia, SC; grandchildren: Bailey, Brayden, Kylie, Joshua & Jacob, Kelly, Laura, John, Daniel, Maddie, Joshua, Trey and Ansley; sister, Kay (Rick) Burden, Leon, KS; and several nieces and nephews, special friends, and his loving Giant Schnauzer, Otis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Barbara Simmons; his sister, Nancy Lynn Smith; and his beloved grandson, Jesse Neil.

HELTON

MRS. EDNA LEA SHIVER HELTON, age 87, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday morning, April 12, 2022, in the local nursing home. Born in Crossland, Georgia on October 31, 1934, she was a daughter of the late J. C. and Allie Mae Williams Shiver, wife of William Buck Helton. Mrs. Helton was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church and retired from Rebeaming Department of Mount Vernon Mills. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, the late Jack Austin Warren, a brother, the late Otis Shiver and a step daughter, Becky Dean.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Rick Wyatt; grandson, Stacy Wyatt; great grandson, Will Wyatt; sister, Linda (Alan) Green; step children, Donna Tyson, Terry Helton, Michael Helton, and Mary Ann Helton; a number of Step Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

 Mr. Robert Lewis (Bob) Reynolds, age 92, of Lyerly, GA, passed away peacefully April 9, 2022 at Wellspring Hospice in Marietta, GA after a brief illness.

Mr. Reynolds was born October 6, 1929 at home in Summerville, GA, son of the late Lonnie Lee Reynolds and Alice Mae Ragland Reynolds. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Summerville where he was a deacon in prior years. He was retired from various jobs at the Georgia Rug Mill, now Mohawk. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Reynolds was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Louise Rosser Reynolds; brothers, Claude Lee “Bud” Reynolds, Leric Reynolds, Raymond Reynolds, and Joe David Reynolds; sisters, Ruby Mae Reynolds Lecroy, Maxine Reynolds Lee; and sister-in-laws, Louise Reynolds, Nelda Reynolds, & June Reynolds.

Mr. Reynolds is survived by his son, David Lewis Reynolds (Teresa), daughters, Donna Jean Wright (Thomas), and Nancy Ann Daniel (David). Brother: Cecil Morris Reynolds; Sisters in Law: Juanita Reynolds and Joyce Reynolds; brother-in-law, Billy Joe Lee; 5 grandchildren: Jason Wright (Sarah), Kevin Daniel (LeAnna), Amy Lamb (Seth), Matthew Daniel (Kendele), and Andrew Daniel. Two great-grandchildren: Everett & Lydia Daniel. Many nieces and nephews also blessed his life.

 WALTER WILLIAM LEROY WITT, age 83, of Trion, Georgia, passed away, with Family by his side, on April 8, 2022. LeRoy proudly served his country in the Army. LeRoy retired from Mount Vernon Mills in September of 2000. He was a proud member of Ridgeway Baptist Church and was a regular attender in his Sunday School class. LeRoy was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Earl Witt, and was preceded in death by his first wife Marion Jean Witt, sisters, Anne Bell Mann and Clarice Littlejohn; brothers, J. C. Witt and Raymond Witt; grandson, Jonathan Morris.

LeRoy is survived by his wife of 20 years, Lydia Witt; children and step-children, Stacy (Janette) Witt, Sandra (Buddy) Parks, Debbie Brown, Traci (Tommy) Latiolais; twelve grandchildren, Ryan Witt, Scott Witt, Dylan Witt, Jennifer (Kevin) Cheely, Dusty (Kaitlin) Brown, Cody (Raegan) Brown, Victoria (Carter) Harris, and Alexander Morris; four great grandchildren, Landon Witt, Breeland Brown, Briggs Brown, and Keegan Brown; sister-in-law, Deedle Scott. LeRoy also had several Nieces and Nephews, that he loved dearly.

LeRoy loved his family and always considered those around him family as well. He was most proud of his wife and his dog, Mia. LeRoy loved to make people laugh and Share Jesus with those around him. He was most famous for his intentional prayers and the relationship he had with Jesus. LeRoy had a love for cars and even owned 2 Model “A”’s in his lifetime; in spare time, LeRoy was an avid woodworker. LeRoy was the true example of this scripture, “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches and favor is better than silver or gold”. The contagious smile, His love for Jesus and his love for others will always live in our hearts and never be forgotten. LeRoy would want his legacy to continue on by sharing Christ with those around you.

MRS. CHARLOTTE M. MOSELEY, age 91, of Highway #114, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday evening, March 22, 2022, in a Rome hospital. She was born on March 17, 1931, in Lyerly, Georgia, to the late James Gordon and Bulah Irine Floyd Espy. Mrs. Moseley was a member of the Berryton Baptist Church, was retired Clerk for Best Mfg. Company, and in addition to Parents was preceded in death by, husband, the late Dannie Faye Moseley, and siblings Woodrow Espy, John Gordon Espy, Billy Espy, Katherine Espy, and Dorothy Espy, all died earlier.

Surviving are daughters and spouse, Joan & Dennis Ivey and Jan Bryan; grandchildren, Wendy and Dee Price, Adam and Jessie Ivey, Hope and Harrison Couch, and Heather and Austin Hatcher; great grandchildren, Haley, Savannah, and William Price, Landon, Easton, and Cullen Ivey, and Charlotte Faye Hatcher; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Ann Espy Norton, Dorothy Myrick, Imogene Vanpelt, and Joyce and Fred Moseley; special neighbor, Joan Goff; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mr. Terry Lee Bice, age 62 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday morning, March 17, 2022 in a Rome, Georgia Hospital. He was born October 12, 1959, in LaFayette, Georgia, a son of the late Frank and Vera Mae Bundrum Bice. In addition to his parents, Terry was preceded in death by brothers, Frank Bice, Jr., Leonard Bice, and Richard Bice.

Surviving are his sister, Cindy Williams; brothers, Roland Bice, Danny Bice, and Billy Bice; several nieces and nephews also survive.

MRS. GERALDINE (JERRY) WEAVER, age 94, of Kirby Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday afternoon, March 12, 2022, at her residence. A native of Trion, Georgia, She was born to the late Thomas S. and Lillie Mae Ivans Hawkins on March 6, 1928. A Charter Member of New Beginnings Baptist Church, She was lunchroom manager retired, for Chattooga County School system, and later cashier for Walmart. Mrs. Weaver was preceded in death by her husband, the late Gaines Weaver.

He was born in Trion, Georgia to the late Leroy and Angeline Romine Westbrooks on June 25, 1948. Mr. Westbrooks was a retired auto mechanic for Chrysler.

MR. WILEY THOMAS (TJ) HENDERSON, JR., age 84, of Tinney Road, Trion, Georgia passed away Friday evening, March 4, 2022, at his residence. A native of Trion, Georgia, He was born to the late Wiley Thomas Henderson, Sr. and Margie R. Westbrooks Henderson on July 16, 1937. Mr. Henderson was an auto dealer, owned and operated TJ’s Used Cars, was a Veteran of the U. S. Air Force serving in the Korean War, and was preceded in death by his wife, the late Patsy Louise Tinney Henderson and son, the late Stephen Salerno.

MRS. PAULINE AQUILA LEE WOOD passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at Oak View Nursing and Rehab Center in Summerville, Georgia at the age of 86. Pauline was born in the Berryton Community on April 17, 1935, to the late Russell and Flossie Lorene Murphy Lee. A lifelong member of the Berryton Church of God, She served many years as a Sunday School Teacher. She loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. She was always a homemaker and her job was to take care of her five sons, instilling in them her love for the Lord. She loved and cherished all of her Family. In addition to Parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, William Clayton Wood; two sons, Rickey Moore and Lamar Moore; two Brothers and two Sisters.

Surviving are three sons, Marty Wood, Billy (Tracy) Wood, and David (Alisa) Wood; seven Grandchildren, eleven Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

WENDI ELIZABETH WILSON, AGE 52 of Summerville passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2022, in a Rome Hospital. She was born in Floyd County, Georgia on May 29, 1969, daughter of Ewart Quinton Wilson, Jr. and the late Candace Dunnaway. Wendi worked as an Occupational Therapist for Windwood Behavioral Health Services in Rome, Georgia for a number of years. She was a member of the Northside Church of Christ and the Floyd County Chapter of the Georgia Council of the Blind. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her grandparents the late Ewart Quinton Sr., Virginia Newsome Wilson and the late Betty Copeland.

Earl "Red" Parris left for his heavenly home, February 20, 2022 while a resident at Winthrop Court Memory Care in Rome, GA. He born April 4, 1935 to Ollie Parris and Jessie Brock Parris in Walker County, Georgia.  Earl was married to his lovely bride, Wanda Elgin for 50 years.  He served in the Korean War from 1952 until 1957, at the early age of 16, and was promoted to Sgt. 1st class.  Earl loved serving the community as a councilman and working closely with the city employees.  He worked for the city of Summerville after returning from Korea, later as a sales rep for Delta Municipal Supply, Tri State Pipe, and retired from Meter Service & Sales.  Earl worked with many political campaigns and was a dedicated supporter for Georgia.  His passion was to see a veterans park in our community and help Veterans gain and understand their benefits.  He will surely, be missed.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, wife Wanda, and 2nd wife Dorothy Bennett,

He is survived by a daughter, Katharine Parris Romstad (Tracy Jacobs), son, Earl H. Parris( Christine); grandchildren, Amanda Parris and Kimberly Parris; step daughter, Wanda Pollard (Jerry), and grandson, John Pollard.

Brown and Cleavie Little Brown on November 11, 1948.  He was retired from the former Galey & Lord Mill, a member of Grace Baptist Church, and a member of Floyd Springs Lodge F & AM.   Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife, the late Frances Elifair White Brown.

Born in Summerville, She was a daughter of the late Kathryn Priest Padgett and Charles Padgett. A spiritual person and a faithful believer in God, Kathy was kind and generous, always helping others whenever she could. Her warm and bubbly personality meant she never met a stranger.

He was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 18, 1941, son of the late J.C. and Madeline Ledford Edgeworth. He was retired from the Card Room of Harriett-Henderson Mills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ruth Luallen Edgeworth.

MR. PAUL HARDEMAN, age 96, of Goodwin Drive, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, February 5, 2022, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Hardeman was born on January 26, 1926 in Sylvania, Alabama to the late Roy Jefferson and Mary Bankey Hardeman. He was a member of South Commerce Church of Christ, a Veteran of WW II a member of the 9th United States Air Force, serving stateside, in England, Germany, and Czechoslovakia, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was retired from United Postal Service as rural letter carrier and member of the National Rural letter carriers association. In addition to Parents, Mr. Hardeman was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Jessie Ann Fletcher Hardeman and a granddaughter the late Amanda Blackwell Early.

Surviving are daughter Paula and John Montgomery; son, Brian Paul Hardeman; sister, Amy Lorene Hardeman; granddaughter, Melissa and Britt Ragland; great grandchildren, Rodney Early, II, Kennedi, Alexa, Carsen, and Evan Ragland.

MRS. NANCY WHITE MCDANIEL, age 90, of Ellen Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, January 30, 2022. She was born in Lyerly, Georgia, on April 23, 1931, to the late Wallace and Sarah McLeod Smith. Mrs. McDaniel was a member of the Pennville Community Church and for over thirty years, was a nurse at Chattooga Hospital. She had a creative spirit and enjoyed painting, crafts, and ceramics. She served as a Girl Scout leader, was a dedicated military wife, traveling extensively through Europe with four children, enriching their cultural and world view of life. She had a love of travel, new places, and experiences. She was preceded in death by her, husband the late Earl McDaniel.

Surviving are four daughters, Nancy Gribble, Cynthia (Eddie) Wilson, Malinda (Jay) Tonge, and Laura (Kelvin) Lovingood; grandchildren, Michelle Chamlee, Michael (Ashley) Terrell, and Daniel (Julia) Terrell; great-grandchildren, Samuel Terrell, Emmie Terrell, and Jake Terrell.

MS. PATRICIA VENITA “PURPLE PATTI” BOZEMAN, age 62, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022 at Redmond Hospital, in Rome, Georgia. In accordance with Her wishes, since she was diagnosed with scleroderma over twenty years ago, her body was donated to science for research. Ms. Bozeman was born May 18, 1959, in Atlanta, Georgia. Ms. Rose Benedict Jackson,104, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, January 23, 2022.

She was born in Pittsburg, KS but relocated to Chattooga County following her service in WWII. She was a World War II veteran who proudly served in the European Theaters with the U.S. Army’s 5th Evacuation Hospital as a Nurse achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

After discharge from the service, Ms. Jackson married Grover C. Jackson and began a 70 plus year residency in Chattooga County residing in Lyerly and Summerville. Ms. Jackson worked as a nurse for Dr. G. H Little for 23 years and for Bigelow-Sanford Inc for almost 5 years before retiring in 1972.

Ms. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband, Grover C. Jackson. She is survived by her nephew, Kenneth Henderson of Ocala, FL, her nieces Barbara Deane of Kansas City, MO, and Rosemary Macisaac of Escondido, CA.

MR. SHANE ELROD, age 45, of Bittings Avenue, Summerville, Georgia, passed away January 13, 2022, at his residence. Shane was born in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on January 28, 1976, was a son of the late Franklin Dave Elrod and the late Martha Sharon Little Elrod. He was employed by J. P. Smith Lumber Company.

Janice Chapman Bennett, age 85 of Summerville, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2022.

Born in Demorest, Georgia on December 25, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Chapman and June Wiggins Chapman Hicks. Mrs. Bennett was a teller with Habersham Bank of Baldwin and retired with 20 years of service. She was an avid supporter of the Chattooga Cancer Support Group and loved her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her late husband, Lathan Bennett; first husband, Willie Joe McGraw; step-father, Raymond Hicks; paternal grandparents, Oscar & Clara Wiggins; maternal grandparents, Will & Minnie Chapman.

Jack Ross Herring

Leaving a Legacy

Strong. Generous. Loving. Adventurous. Fair. Firm. Charming. These are only a few words to describe Jack Ross Herring, 85, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 5th, 2022, at the home he built in Summerville, Georgia in 1974.

Jack will be remembered most as being the principal of Chattooga High School from 1972 until 1988, with thousands of students and teachers under his care spanning two decades. Prior to this, Jack was born on May 31, 1936, in Boyce, Louisiana. He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy from 1952 until 1956. His adventurous spirit took him all over the United States, finally settling down in Summerville, Georgia. He attended Berry College and received his bachelor’s degree in education and ultimately received his Specialists Degree as he continued his career, progressing from teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent, finally reaching retirement in 1998.

His passions include his family, traveling, golf, home renovations, landscaping, and was an avid silver collector in his later years. While he built many things in his lifetime, he was most proud of building his home, which his daughter and her family now reside in, and he was a participant in the building of Horizon Baptist Fellowship, his church home for 30 years.

Jack was preceded in death by his mother, Esther Hillman Herring Fredricks and father, Stephen A. Herring, as well as his brother, Maxie Herring, of Alexandria, Louisiana. Left here to carry out his legacy are his beloved daughter Heather Herring Casey, son-in law Nicolas Casey and granddaughters Caroline Grace Jackson, 20, Colbi Marie Jackson, 19, and Olivia Nicole Casey, 13. Other surviving family include Donna Fant Herring of Centre, Alabama, Sue Dunn Holloway and family, Maureen Herring, Sheryl Herring Lambert and family, Karen Herring and family, Candace Herring Blount and family, and Stephen Jody Herring, all of Louisiana.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 8th, 2022 at Rainwater Funeral Home from 3 until 5 PM and a Memorial Celebration Service will be held on Sunday, January 9th, 2022 at Horizon Baptist Fellowship at 2:00 PM.

MR. JOHN WESLEY BUSBY, age 70, of Scott Hill, Summerville, Georgia, passed away December 21, 2021 in the local Nursing Home. A native of Seabring, Florida, He was born to the late A. W. and Evelyn Paxton Busby on March 30, 1951. He was Baptist by Faith, retired journeyman millwright, a Mason, and Shriner.

John William Hovanec, 78, of Summerville GA passed away 11/23/2021. John was born to John & Bessie (Crowe) Hovanec 09/16/1943 in Pittsburgh PA and grew up in Atlanta, GA. He graduated from Murphy High School, served in the US Army then graduated from Dekalb Junior College and attended ABAC (Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton GA).

He is survived by Ruth H. Neal (David), Joyce H. Jones (Randy) and brothers, James T. Hovanec (Sally), and George R. Hovanec (Theresa) many Nieces and Nephews and cousins. A memorial will be determined in the future.

Born in Fort Payne, Alabama on March 10, 1940, He was a son of the late John Lee and Edith Odell Owens Reece. Sonny was an excellent painter by trade and an exceptional musician. Mrs. Willingham was a Loving Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother; was an avid golfer and former member of Trion Golf Club. She was member of Summerville First Baptist Church, the Fidelis Sunday School Class, and the Joy Club of the Church. Mrs. Willingham was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, the late Babe Lee Willingham and a son, the late Stan Willingham.

She was born June 23, 1976 in Miami, Florida to Terry and Lucille Letourneau Adams who survive. Mrs. Wells was a Trion High School Graduate, received her Bachelors Degree from Shorter University, Masters Degree from Walden University, and Specialist Degree from Lincoln Memorial University. She has taught at Trion Middle School for the past 25 years.

 HONORABLE SEWELL PRESTON CASH, age 91, of East Teloga Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday morning, November 28, 2021, at his residence. A native Chattooga Countian, he was born to the late Alfred A. (Shorty) and Arrie Dendy Cash on October 24, 1930. He was retired from General Electric in Rome. Mr. Cash was preceded in death by his wife, the late Betty Jean Cash on July 8, 2013, sisters, the late Betty Faye McGinnis and the late Harriett Carroll; brother, the late Jack Cash.

Mr. Cash was a star player for the Summerville High School 1950 Basketball State Champions and was drafted into the St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Organization for a period of time. He was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving as a Corporal in the U. S. Army, 43rd Infantry Division from 1951-1953. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed spending time with his family. Mr. Cash was a Youth League Coach in the Summerville Recreation Department. Mr. Cash was the founding Director of the Chattooga County Veterans Memorial Park Committee. Mr. Cash was a 63-year member of the American Legion Post 129, VFW Post 6688, and a 23-year member of Sons of American Legion Squadron 129. Mr. Cash was a member of the City of Summerville City Council from January 1, 1972 to December 31, 1977, and he was Mayor of the City of Summerville from January 1, 1978 to December 31, 1997.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Keitha and Doug Shamblin; sons and daughters-in-law, Preston and Lori Cash and Michael and Terry Tucker. Felton was born on March 27, 1934, in Lyerly, Georgia, a son of the late Willie Lee and Lerla McCutchen Sims. He was a member of Faith Temple Holiness Church in Berryton; most recently attended Emory ChapelMethodist Church in Newman, Georgia. He was retired from Valley Joist Steel Company, Fort Payne, Alabama. In addition to His parents, was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Lee Henry Sims, sisters Clevidale Hawkins, Marvelene Devalt, Christine Gary, and Mary Crane; brothers, Jack West, Fred “Doodle” Sims, Richard “Merdie” Sims, and Alfred “Bob” Sims. Mr. Sims was a strong advocate of education. He had to quit school at a young age in order to help support his family. He always encouraged others to pursue higher education.

Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Sonja Loretta Sims and granddaughter Florinda Sims, whom He loved with all his heart; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 13th, at 1:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor John Mann officiating, interment in Johnson Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. at the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Mrs. Lillian F. Daniel, 78, of Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday, November 4, 2021. She was born in Floyd County, Georgia on February 25, 1943, a daughter of the late Jessie Lee, Sr. and Leona Webb Shuman. Mrs. Daniel worked in the Bleaching Department of Riegel Textile and was preceded in death by her husband, the late C. L. Daniel, siblings Michael Shuman and Jesse Lamar Shuman, and step mother, Emma Shuman.

Surviving are children, Cynthia Clark, Rhonda (Phil) Stowe, Lisa Parks, Bobby (Karen) Teems, Billy (Becky) Teems, Myra (Danny) Overbay; grandchildren, Seth Clark, Brett Clark, Zev Greenberg, Megan and Courtney Stowe, Loren Stewart, Payton and Jordan Teems, Cody Teems, Elijah Teems, Deanna and Jeremy Overbay, Luke Overbay; several Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. GENEVA FOUNTAIN, age 75, of Dry Valley Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, October 29, 2021, at her residence, following a sudden event. A native Chattooga Countian, She was born on January 12, 1946 to the late Robert (Bob) and Bernice Smith Siffles. Mrs. Siffles was Holiness by Faith and was retired from House keeping from Oak View Nursing and Rehab. Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Jessie Lee Fountain on August 12, 2013, sister, the late Margaret Siffles, brothers, the late Billy Siffles, Ray Siffles, Charles Ragan, Terry Ragan, Hollis Siffles.

Surviving are daughters and spouses, Darlene and Phillip Bruce and Patricia and Troy Tapp; son and spouse, Tony and Penny Fountain; sisters, Betty Edgeworth, Dorothy Forest, Glenda Green, Linda Wade, and Barbara Blackmon; brothers, Jack Siffles, Leon Siffles, Roger Siffles, Bobby Siffles, and David Ragan; Six Grandchildren, Seven Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. BRUCE EUGENE OWENS, age 69, of Rock Spring, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2021, at his residence, following a brief illness. Born in Lakeview, Georgia on March 31, 1952, He was a son of the late Hill and Lucille Waters Owens. Mr. Owens was a retired machinist for Roper Corporation and a Veteran of the U. S. Army.

Surviving are His sisters, Thelma McDaniel of Rock Spring and Wilma Bybee of Florida; several Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. DORIS BRAMLETT BOWMAN, age 87, of Whitley Drive, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at her residence. She was born January 22, 1934, at Watson Cross Roads, Alabama, a daughter of the late Grady H. and Tessie Burke Bramlett. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Doris was a hairdresser since her younger days, then worked as a switchboard operator for Chattooga County Hospital, a job she truly loved. She was one of the most kindhearted, generous, caring women and has missed her lifelong true love and husband, Evan Bowman, who passed away February 12, 2011. Doris would do anything to care for her family; she cooked a delicious Sunday lunch for many years, usually making two and three versions of the same dish to please different family members. She never met a stranger, enjoying conversation with everyone she met. Doris loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, looking to Him daily for guidance; she belonged to Calvary Baptist Church all her adult life.

Surviving are daughter, Becky Burns of Rome; sons and daughters-in-law, Randy & Kay Bowman and Tim & Suzann Bowman all of Summerville; grandchildren, Kyle Bowman, Haley Bowman, Kelsey Bowman, Jennifer Rogers, Jacob Bowman, and Will Bowman; Ten Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. SHARON DENISE (SHERRY) MORGAN, age 64, of Scoggins Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Monday, October 25, 2021, in a Rome hospital. A native of Chattooga County, She was born on December 21, 1956, to Billy Joe and Betty Imogene Atchley Simpson, who survive. Mrs. Morgan was Baptist by Faith and was assistant Manager retired for Family Dollar Store.

Surviving are husband, Gary Morgan; Parents, Billy and Betty Simpson; daughter, Kristie Michelle Morgan; son, Joseph William Morgan.; sister, Lisa Simpson Cordell; brother, Timothy Jason Simpson; Five Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. BETTY FAYE SIFFLES, age 71, of Martin Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2021, in a Rome hospital. Born in Trion, Georgia, on March 17, 1950; She was a daughter of the late J. C. and Madeline Ledford Edgeworth. Mrs. Siffles was Supervisor for Lookout Mountain Transportation and a member of the Community Holiness Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by grandson, the late Braiden Fitzpatrick and brothers, the late Rev. Paul Edgeworth and the late J. T. Edgeworth.

MR. MARTY RAY GREEN, age 53, of Smith Rail Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, October 17th, 2021, in a Rome hospital, following an illness. Marty was born May 23, 1968, in Rome, Georgia, to the late Ray and Terresa Diane Shipp Green. He was Baptist by Faith, was self-employed in the Construction industry, and in addition to Parents was preceded in death by his brother, the late Joey Green on June 15, 1998.

Surviving are wife, Cheryl Green; daughter, Marti Katherine Green; stepchildren, Heath and Savannah McGuire, Erica McGuire and Brandon Fountain; five Step Grandchildren.

MR. JAMES MATTHEW FLOYD, age 46, of Back Berryton Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday evening, October 1, 2021, in a Rome hospital. A native Chattooga Countian, He was born on June 17, 1975 to Mike and Jane Ivey Floyd, who survive. He was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, was a graduate of Chattooga High School Class of 1993, served in the U. S. Army during Desert Storm, and was employed as a lab technician for Mohawk Industries. Mr. Floyd was preceded in death by grandparents, J. W. Floyd and Francis Bush Floyd and Johnnie and Gladys Ivey, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Wanda Prather.

Surviving are His wife, Elena Floyd; children, Anna Craig Floyd, Jamey and Will Floyd; parents, Mike and Jane Floyd; sister, Terri Lynn Floyd; brothers, Mickey and Stephanie Floyd and Mark and Beth Floyd; several Nieces and Nephews.
