Mrs. Marion N. Shiver

MRS. MARION N. SHIVER, age 90, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2014, in the local nursing home. Born on October 1, 1924, in Calhoun, Georgia, a daughter of the late John Hobson and Sarah Etta Frady Nelson. She was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, a member of the Dorcus Sunday School Class, and a faithful member of the choir. Together with Her late husband, Otis Shiver, she was in retail sales. Mrs. Shiver was also a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Aux.

Surviving are sons & daughter-in-law, Nelson Shiver of Atlanta and Farrell and Kay Willingham Shiver of Woodstock; granddaughter, Sarah Bethany Shiver; brother & spouse, Charles and Helen Nelson of Varnell, GA.; sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Edna Helton of Summerville and Linda & Alan Green of Lyerly; several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services Friday, January 2nd, at 3:00 P.M. from the Summerville First Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Summey, Dr. Paul Mason, and Dr. David Hunter officiating, interment in the Family plot of Summerville Cemetery. Active Pallbearers-Michael Green, Marc Green, Cory Green, Adam Green, Ricky Wyatt, Stacey Wyatt, and Will Wyatt; Honorary Pallbearers-the Dorcus Sunday School Class of Summerville First Baptist Church and Administration and Staff of Oak View Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Hillman Hix

MR. HILLMAN HIX, age 96, of Trion, Georgia passed away Monday, December 29, 2014, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Gore, Georgia on September 27, 1918, a son of the late Eugene and Ruby Phillips Hix. Mr. Hix was a Trion High School graduate, served in the U.S. Army during WW II from February, 1941 Muntil October, 1945 in General Patton’s 2nd Armored Division; returning to Trion to work for Reigel Textile Corporation, later Mount Vernon Mills personnel office until retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Willie B. Parham Hix in 2006, sisters, the late Susie Gray, Nell Hendrix, Georgia Mae Walker, Ruby Lee Nix, and brothers, the late Freeman Hix and Jack Hix.

Surviving are Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral will be held Thursday, January 1st, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, with Minister Bradley Hayes officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 P.M. til the hour of service.

Mr. Charles W. Spraggins

MR. CHARLES W. SPRAGGINS, age 75, of Berry Ridge, Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia Mr. Spraggins was born to the late Julius James and Bonnie Gardner Spraggins on May 18, 1939. For several years He was telegraph operator for the Southern Rail Road, afterwards was supervisor, welder, and pipe fitter for Inland Container, retiring after 35 years of service. Mr. Spraggins was also an Amateur Radio Operator for 40 years and following retirement was a member of The Southern Baptist Association Disaster Relief Service serving as a ham radio operator in disaster areas. He was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are His wife of 54 years, Carolyn Spraggins; daughter, Penny Headrick of Armuchee; son, Chad Spraggins of Summerville; grandchildren, Ryan Headrick, Whitney Headrick, Sierra Campbell, and Jacob Spraggins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 13th, at 1:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Bryant and Rev. Kevin Woods officiating, interment in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Active Pallbearers Ryan Headrick, Steven Fountain, Vic Morris, Dale Russell, Brian Scott, and Mickey Floyd; Honorary Pallbearers the Seekers Sunday School Class of Summerville First Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class of South Summerville Baptist Church. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 A.M. til 1 P.M. at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Frank M. Ledford

MR. FRANK M. LEDFORD, age 81, of Kellett Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, December 8, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. Born on October 12, 1933, in Chattooga County, a son of the late Charlie M. and Ora Mae Smith Ledford, He was retired from Mohawk Industries, and a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, and Baraca Sunday School Class. Mr. Ledford was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Korean War, a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., the Mohawk Elite 25 Year Club, and the Georgia Power Ambassadors, Rome Chapter. He was preceded in death by two sisters- Violet White and Flossie Wooten, and two brothers- Charles “Jack” Ledford and Bobby Ledford.

Surviving are: Wife, Frances Kellett Ledford; son- Frank Coleman (Debra) Ledford of Chattanooga, TN; Granddaughter- Frances (Jason) Lewis; Grandson- Frank Judson Ledford; Great Granddaughter- Callista Rose Butner, Great Grandson- Elijah Joe Butner all of Chattanooga. Sister-Winnie L. (Donald) Chandler of Summerville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 10th, at 1:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, with Dr. Paul Mason and Dr. David Hunter officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be: Randy Ledford, Jack Ledford, Gary Floyd, Jerod Floyd, Randy Thompson, Marty Wesson and Ricky Johnson. Visitation will be at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home Wednesday from 11:30 A.M until the hour of service.

Mr. Herschel Howard Reed

MR, HERSCHEL HOWARD REED, age 69, of Milton Circle, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014. A native Chattooga County, He was born to the late Eddie Thomas and Lula Woodall Reed on July 25, 1945. He attended the North Summerville Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a sister, the late Mary Frances Cordle and a daughter, the late Regina Little.

Surviving are sons-Terry Reed, Gary Reed, Marty Reed, and Wayne Reed; brothers, Joe Reed of Rock Spring and Herbert Reed; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Graveside service Friday, December 5th, in Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Tom Russell officiating. Pallbearers Brett Reed, Justin Little, Kyle Delango, Chris Brown, Josh Bates, and Allen Trammell.

Mrs. Bernie Oliver Pledger

MRS. BERNIE OLIVER PLEDGER, of McCollum Street, Trion, Georgia passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014. She was born December 12, 1917 in Collinsville, Alabama to the late Fred Douglas and Stella Brock Oliver. Besides Her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil T. Pledger, son, Charles T. Pledger, daughter, Joyce Ann Pledger, grandson, Charles Andrew “Andy” Peppers, daughter-in-law, Glenda Pledger, also four sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn (Sam) Peppers of Lyerly, Ed Earl (Sissy) Pledger of Gainesville, Johnny (Joyce) Pledger of Trion, and daughter-in-law, Jo Pledger Baker of Ft. Oglethorpe. She is also survived by 7 grandchidren, Donna Fernandes, Tommy Pledger, Sammy Peppers, Ginger Hosmer, Scott Pledger, Paige Hanson, and Dustin Pledger. She also leaves behind 7 great grandchildren, her siblings, John Henry Oliver, J.T. Oliver, Bobbie Goodwin, Kathyleen Sparks, and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

At Mrs. Pledger’s request, she will be cremated and interred in a private service.

Mr. Harold Lee Battles Sr.

MR. HAROLD LEE BATTLES, SR., age 84, of Lyerly, Georgia, Holland Community, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Chattooga County, He was born to the late M. D. and Grace Huckabee Battles on December 25, 1929. Mr. Battles was retired from Inland Container lime kill department, after 36 years service. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Elizabeth Joyce Crabtree Battles, on September 29, 1997 and a Son the late Harold Lee Battles, Jr. in 2012.

Surviving are daughter-Sandra Vaughn of Fort Payne, Alabama; sons-Dennis Lamar Battles of Haveway, Missouri and James Michael Battles of Lyerly; numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 2nd, at 1:00 P.M. from Graveside in New Hope South Cemetery, with Rev. Bill Abercrombie officiating, Pallbearers will be Grandsons. The Family request no food.
