Mrs. Marion N. Shiver

MRS. MARION N. SHIVER, age 90, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2014, in the local nursing home. Born on October 1, 1924, in Calhoun, Georgia, a daughter of the late John Hobson and Sarah Etta Frady Nelson. She was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, a member of the Dorcus Sunday School Class, and a faithful member of the choir. Together with Her late husband, Otis Shiver, she was in retail sales. Mrs. Shiver was also a member of the American Legion and V.F.W. Aux.

Surviving are sons & daughter-in-law, Nelson Shiver of Atlanta and Farrell and Kay Willingham Shiver of Woodstock; granddaughter, Sarah Bethany Shiver; brother & spouse, Charles and Helen Nelson of Varnell, GA.; sisters-in-law & brother-in-law, Edna Helton of Summerville and Linda & Alan Green of Lyerly; several Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services Friday, January 2nd, at 3:00 P.M. from the Summerville First Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Summey, Dr. Paul Mason, and Dr. David Hunter officiating, interment in the Family plot of Summerville Cemetery. Mr. Hillman Hix

MR. HILLMAN HIX, age 96, of Trion, Georgia passed away Monday, December 29, 2014, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Gore, Georgia on September 27, 1918, a son of the late Eugene and Ruby Phillips Hix. Mr. Hix was a Trion High School graduate, served in the U.S. Army during WW II from February, 1941 Muntil October, 1945 in General Patton’s 2nd Armored Division; returning to Trion to work for Reigel Textile Corporation, later Mount Vernon Mills personnel office until retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Willie B. Parham Hix in 2006, sisters, the late Susie Gray, Nell Hendrix, Georgia Mae Walker, Ruby Lee Nix, and brothers, the late Freeman Hix and Jack Hix.

Surviving are Nieces and Nephews.

Funeral will be held Thursday, January 1st, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, with Minister Bradley Hayes officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 P.M. til the hour of service.

Mr. Charles W. Spraggins

MR. CHARLES W. SPRAGGINS, age 75, of Berry Ridge, Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia Mr. Spraggins was born to the late Julius James and Bonnie Gardner Spraggins on May 18, 1939. For several years He was telegraph operator for the Southern Rail Road, afterwards was supervisor, welder, and pipe fitter for Inland Container, retiring after 35 years of service. Mr. Spraggins was also an Amateur Radio Operator for 40 years and following retirement was a member of The Southern Baptist Association Disaster Relief Service serving as a ham radio operator in disaster areas. He was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church.

Surviving are His wife of 54 years, Carolyn Spraggins; daughter, Penny Headrick of Armuchee; son, Chad Spraggins of Summerville; grandchildren, Ryan Headrick, Whitney Headrick, Sierra Campbell, and Jacob Spraggins.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 13th, at 1:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Bryant and Rev. Mr. Frank M. Ledford

MR. FRANK M. LEDFORD, age 81, of Kellett Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, December 8, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. Born on October 12, 1933, in Chattooga County, a son of the late Charlie M. and Ora Mae Smith Ledford, He was retired from Mohawk Industries, and a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, and Baraca Sunday School Class. Mr. Ledford was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Korean War, a member of the American Legion, V.F.W., the Mohawk Elite 25 Year Club, and the Georgia Power Ambassadors, Rome Chapter. He was preceded in death by two sisters- Violet White and Flossie Wooten, and two brothers- Charles “Jack” Ledford and Bobby Ledford.

Surviving are: Wife, Frances Kellett Ledford; son- Frank Coleman (Debra) Ledford of Chattanooga, TN; Granddaughter- Frances (Jason) Lewis; Grandson- Frank Judson Ledford; Great Granddaughter- Callista Rose Butner, Great Grandson- Elijah Joe Butner all of Chattanooga. Sister-Winnie L. (Donald) Chandler of Summerville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Herschel Howard Reed

MR, HERSCHEL HOWARD REED, age 69, of Milton Circle, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014. A native Chattooga County, He was born to the late Eddie Thomas and Lula Woodall Reed on July 25, 1945. He attended the North Summerville Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a sister, the late Mary Frances Cordle and a daughter, the late Regina Little.

Surviving are sons-Terry Reed, Gary Reed, Marty Reed, and Wayne Reed; brothers, Joe Reed of Rock Spring and Herbert Reed; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Graveside service Friday, December 5th, in Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Tom Russell officiating. Pallbearers Brett Reed, Justin Little, Kyle Delango, Chris Brown, Josh Bates, and Allen Trammell.

Mrs. Bernie Oliver Pledger

MRS. BERNIE OLIVER PLEDGER, of McCollum Street, Trion, Georgia passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014. She was born December 12, 1917 in Collinsville, Alabama to the late Fred Douglas and Stella Brock Oliver. Besides Her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil T. Pledger, son, Charles T. Pledger, daughter, Joyce Ann Pledger, grandson, Charles Andrew “Andy” Peppers, daughter-in-law, Glenda Pledger, also four sisters and two brothers.

She is survived by her children, Marilyn (Sam) Peppers of Lyerly, Ed Earl (Sissy) Pledger of Gainesville, Johnny (Joyce) Pledger of Trion, and daughter-in-law, Jo Pledger Baker of Ft. Oglethorpe. She is also survived by 7 grandchidren, Donna Fernandes, Tommy Pledger, Sammy Peppers, Ginger Hosmer, Scott Pledger, Paige Hanson, and Dustin Pledger. She also leaves behind 7 great grandchildren, her siblings, John Henry Oliver, J.T. Oliver, Bobbie Goodwin, Kathyleen Sparks, and numerous Nieces and Nephews.

At Mrs. Pledger’s request, she will be cremated and interred in a private service.

Mr. Harold Lee Battles Sr.

MR. HAROLD LEE BATTLES, SR., age 84, of Lyerly, Georgia, Holland Community, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Chattooga County, He was born to the late M. D. and Grace Huckabee Battles on December 25, 1929. Mr. Battles was retired from Inland Container lime kill department, after 36 years service. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Elizabeth Joyce Crabtree Battles, on September 29, 1997 and a Son the late Harold Lee Battles, Jr. in 2012.

Surviving are daughter-Sandra Vaughn of Fort Payne, Alabama; sons-Dennis Lamar Battles of Haveway, Missouri and James Michael Battles of Lyerly; numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mrs. Peggy Styles Morehead

MRS. PEGGY STYLES MOREHEAD, age 81, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday evening in a Rome hospital. A native of Farner, Tennessee, Mrs. Morehead was born to the late Robert and Mamie Bigham Styles on April 7, 1933. She was graduated from Vanderbilt University Peabody College, her Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, and Six Year Certificate from the University of Arizona. Mrs. Morehead served in the Chattooga School System for thirty years and was School Psychologist. She was a charter member of Horizon Baptist Church and Church Pianist for 18 years. Preceding Her in addition to her Parents are sisters, Jewell Hardeman and Mildred Pettett, brothers, Robert Styles and Clarence Styles.

Surviving are husband, O. G. Morehead, Jr.; daughters, Melanie Eubanks and Rosemary Rush both of Summerville; sisters, Regina Noble of Columbia, S.C., Betty Ferrell of Ashville, N.C., Marlyn Meredith of Summerville, and Annette Woodard of Trion; seven Grandchildren, three Great Grandchildren, a number of Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Memorial Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 29th, at 2:00 P.M. from the Horizon Baptist Fellowship with Dr. John Wyatt officiating. The Family will receive friends at the Church one hour prior to the Service.

MRS. ELIZABETH EVERGREEN KENNETT, age 79, of McGinnis Circle, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014, in a Rome hospital. Born in Fort Payne, Alabama on April 4, 1935, She was a daughter of the late Milford and Maggie Eller Butler, and was a member of the Harrell Street Church of God. She was preceded in death by first husband the late Raymond Kennett, and four brothers-Archie Butler, Earnest Butler, Lester Butler, and Jonathan Butler, also grandsons, Waymond Kennett and Durando Kennett died earlier.

Surviving are husband-Billy Ray Hayes; daughters-Patricia Ann Redwine of Rocky Face and Judy Roberts of Summerville; sons-Raymond Ellis Kennett, Jr. of Summerville and Paul Ivan of Trion; sister-Truevillor Butler of Summerville; brothers-M.H. Butler, Robert Butler, and Howard Butler all of LaFayette, Albert Butler of Dalton, Delon Butler of Cedartown, and Joe Butler of Centre, Al.; twelve Grandchildren, ten Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mrs. Ruth Hayes

MRS. RUTH HAYES, age 84, of Summerville, GA, passed away Wednesday (November 12, 2014) morning in a Rome hospital. Mrs. Hayes was born October 30, 1930, in Fannin County, Georgia, a daughter of the late Rev. Samuel Harrison and Rosia Carlee Davenport; She was Baptist by faith and a Home Maker.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Vernon Hayes; two daughters, Thelma Hall (David McCullough) and Kathy Jarrett (Mike) all of Summerville; two sons, James Hayes and Allen Hayes (Troyce) of Summerville; sisters: Mary Davis of Cartersville, Effie Hayes of Summerville, and Edith Stanley of Talking Rock, GA.; Grandchildren: Jamie Rollins, Amanda Parker, Charlie Jarrett, Jeffery Jarrett, Matt Hayes, Chris Jarrett, Jesse Hayes and Lonnie Hayes; 13 Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

MRS. OLA JANE MCWHORTER, age 94, of Watson Road, Trion, Georgia passed away Wednesday in the local rest home. A native of DeKalb County, Alabama, Mrs. McWhorter was born to the late Robert L. and Tavie Garmany Timmons on March 19, 1920. She was retired from the card room of Riegel Textile Corporation, enjoyed fishing, and crocheting. Mrs. McWhorter was preceded in death by husband, the late W. R. McWhorter.
Surviving are daughter-Jean Westbrook of Trion; son-Ralph E. McWhorter of Trion; sister-Analee Dotson of Trion; brothers-J.B. Timmons and Arlie Timmons both of Trion; seven Grandchildren, ten Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

Mrs. Jessie B. Wingfield

MRS. JESSIE B. WINGFIELD, age 90, passed away on November 11, 2014, at the local nursing home in Summerville, Georgia. She was born on August 22, 1924 in Mt. Juliet, Wilson County, Tennessee to Leonidus “Lee” Burton and Julie Lillie Prowell Burton.

Even though she grew up on a farm in rural Tennessee, her parents instilled the value of education in her and her siblings. She attended and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University, as it is known now, during the years of World War II. After the war, she was offered a job as a teacher with Trion High School. She later met her future husband, Marion M. Wingfield, Jr., and they married on June 18, 1949. Marion died in 1990 two weeks before their 41st anniversary.

Her teaching career at Trion High School began in 1946 and continued until she retired in 1986. She taught mainly English and journalism, but had also taught art and music some years. She was most proud of teaching at least two generations of many of Trion’s students. While in college she was included in the 1945-1946 “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges”. In 1976 as a teacher, she was included in the book, “Outstanding Leaders in Elementary and Secondary Education”. She and Marion and their children were members of the Trion Presbyterian Church during their time in Trion. She also enjoyed attending services at the Methodist Church in her later years.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marion M. Wingfield, Jr., in 1990 and her four siblings and their spouses, Willie B. (Eleanor) Burton, Lillian (John) Turner, Rilla (Chuck) Reeves and Hewlette (Robert) Moseley. Also preceding her in death were her brothers-in-law/sisters-in-law and their spouses, Jimmy (Norma) Wingfield, and Vula (Harlen) Dewey and Tom Wingfield.

She is survived by her two sons, Marion "Pete" Wingfield, III and Burt (Sherrie) Wingfield as well as by five grandchildren, Kyle (Emily) Wingfield, Brent (Lydia) Wingfield, Rebecca Wingfield, Amanda (David) Scruggs and Jeremy (D’Ann)) Wingfield. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren, Charlie Wingfield, Owen Wingfield, David Scruggs, Jr., Taylor Scruggs and Wade Scruggs as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Family visitation will be held at the Rainwater Funeral Home on Saturday, November 15, between 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of Rainwater Funeral Home on Saturday, November 15, at 2:00 P.M. The Rev. Ronald Reagan will officiate. Pallbearers will be Kyle Wingfield, Brent Wingfield, Jeremy Wingfield, Neil Wingfield, David Turner and John Turner. Honorary pallbearers are the staff of G-Hall at the Oakview Nursing and Rehab facility.

A private family interment in West Hill Cemetery will follow the service.

The family requests no flowers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trion Alumni Association Scholarship fund.

Miss Blakeleigh Faith Campbell

MISS BLAKELEIGH FAITH CAMPBELL, infant daughter of Jazmyn Martin and William Campbell of Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday (October 23, 2014) evening, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Rome, Georgia on Thursday. Miss Campbell was preceded in death by great grandmother-Charlene Campbell, great grandfathers-Donald McNeese, Roy Elrod, Lovett Martin, and an uncle-Dee Martin.

Surviving in addition to the Parents are grandparents-Larry Martin, Becky & Shawn Edwards, Beth Campbell, Anthony (Zipper) Campbell; great grandparents-Betty McNeese, Cavalier Martin, Gene Dawson, Anthony Campbell, Sr.; uncles-Austin Campbell & Cody Campbell; several Great Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins also survive.

MRS. VERA H. WILLIAMS, age 89, of Nixon Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday afternoon. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia, She was born to the late Emmett Jackson and Blanche Irene Chandler Hemphill on December 19, 1924. Mrs. Williams was a member of First Presbyterian Church P.C.A.; affectionately known as “Miss Vera”, She was retired Educator from the Chattooga County School system.

Surviving are husband, Andrew M. Williams, Jr.; daughter, Suzann W. Lanier & Sidney A. Lanier, Jr. of Summerville; sons, Gregory A. Williams & Marilyn D. Williams of Dublin, GA. And Andrew M. MRS. KAYE CASEY, age 57, of Hair Lake Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, October 5, 2014, in a Rome hospital. She was born on October 25, 1956 in Chattooga County, Georgia, to the late Albert and Mary Nell Morrow Gilbreath. Mrs. Casey was a member of Horizon Baptist Fellowship and a Teacher in the Chattooga School System. She was preceded in death by a brother, the late Dennis Gilbreath.

Mr. Marshall Steven “Steve” Kirby

MR. MARSHALL STEVEN “STEVE” KIRBY, age 66, of Teloga Community, Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday evening in a Rome hospital. Born in Ft. Bragg, N.C. on May 20, 1948, He was a son of the late Raymond D. “Boog” Kirby and Jo Elizabeth Keef Kirby. Mr. Kirby was a Disabled Veteran of the Viet Nam War, and a member of the V. F. W.

Surviving are son-Kelly Kirby of Menlo; grandchildren-Jaylen Kirby, Lane Kirby, and Braden Kirby; sisters & brothers-in-law-Linda & Bill Powell of Ringgold and Patsy & Nolan White of Summerville; three Nieces also survive.

Mrs. Eula Belle Scoggins

MRS. EULA BELLE SCOGGINS, age 70, of Ramey Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday, September 27, 2014, evening at her residence. She was born in Calhoun, Georgia on December 27, 1943 to the late Otis Richard and Eula Beatrice Flippo Bennett. Mrs. Scoggins was Baptist by Faith and was preceded in death by siblings, Ruby Louise Bennett, William O. Bennett, Dewey Lee Bennett, Archie B. Bennett, and Grady A. Bennett.

MRS. JANE E. WILSON, age 84, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, September 26, 2014, afternoon at her residence. She was born in Walker County, Georgia on April 25, 1930, to the late William and Winfred Catlett Ellis. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband, the late Lorenzo “Pete” Wilson on January 1, 2010, and siblings, Dorothy Brown, Manuel Ellis, Arthur Ellis. and Coy Ellis.

Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Beverly Wilson; grandchildren, Kim Wilson and Lori Powell; great grandchildren, Kristen Hines and Devan Powell; great great granddaughter, Payton Sizemore; sisters, Linda Mashburn and Gail Davis; several Nieces and Nephews.

Mr. William S. "Bill" Bozeman

MR. WILLIAM S. (BILL) BOZEMAN, age 81, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014. Mr. Bozeman was born to the late George Glover and Eva Lyle Bozeman in Montrose, Georgia on December 27, 1932. He attended Eatonton High School and was an outstanding football athlete. Afterward enlisted in the U.S. Army Paratroopers and served from 1953-1955 during the Korean Conflict. He was employed, for 38 years at the General Motors Doraville, Georgia plant. Was married for, 56 years, to the former Clara A. Cash, from Mentone, Alabama, who survives. Mr. Bozeman was preceded in death by Parents, His son, the late Wade Keith Bozeman, also two Sisters, and two Brothers. He attended the Horizon Baptist Fellowship in Summerville.

Surviving are His wife, Clara; daughter, Patricia (Purple Patti) Lind; grandson, Nicholas Lind all of Summerville; brothers, (His twin) William H. Bozeman of Franklin, TN., Dr. John R. (Elizabeth) Bozeman of Conyers; son-in-law, C. Harold (Linda) Williard of Fort Myers, Fl.; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. JIMMY RONALD DOOLEY, age 67, of Nashville, Tennessee, formerly of Columbia, South Carolina and Summerville passed away, Saturday, September 6, 2014, in Nashville. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on March 26, 1947 to the late Earl and Drucilla Dodd Dooley; he was also preceded by a brother the late Glen Earl Dooley.

Surviving are sons-Harrison (Brittany) Dooley Ryan Dooley of Nashville; granddaughter-Roslyn Dooley; sister-Carolyn (Doug) Jones of Summerville; nieces-Sarah (Adrian) Crawford-Cacuir and Eme Crawford.

Mrs. Ruth Waits Ponder Howell

MRS. RUTH WAITS PONDER HOWELL, age 93, of Smallen Road, Lyerly, Georgia passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014, in the local rest home. Born in Polk County, Georgia on September 25, 1920, She was a daughter of the late George Stanley and Effie Coker Waits. Mrs. Howell was a member of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, and was retired from the sample department of the former Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill. She was preceded in death by first husband, the late Fred Ponder and second husband, the late Hillary Howell; sons, Doyle Ponder and Billy Fred Ponder; sisters, Edith McGraw, Faye Ozment, Carole Baker and Lodema Waits; a brother, Kelsey Waits, all died earlier.

Surviving are- Daughter, Vivian Price of Lyerly, Son- Charles Ponder of Orange Park, Fla., Step-daughter- Gail Elrod of Summerville, Sister- Eddie Tinney of Summerville, Brother- Dudley Waits of Rockmart, GA. Eight Grandchildren, Fourteen Great Grandchildren, Four Great Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Weyman W. High

MR. WEYMAN W. HIGH, age 89, of Summerville, Georgia, Gore Community, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014, morning. He was born January 9, 1925 in Chattooga County, the son of the late Flonnie Stephenson High and Enoch Ernest High. Mr. High was a 1943 graduate of Gore High School and served in the U. S. Army during WW II. Weyman married Mary Jackson in 1947, and they would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in September. Mr. High was employed by General Electric in Rome for 25 years and a member of the GE Retirees’ Social Club. Weyman continued to farm and raise cattle many years after his retirement from G.E. He helped organize the Gore Area Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer fireman. He was a member, deacon, and church clerk for Unity Baptist Church, and was currently a member of the Summerville United Methodist Church,

Survivors include his wife, Mary; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and William Crouch; three granddaughters and spouses, Lindsey and Lance Brown, Whitney and Nate Rupp, and Christine Crouch; two great grandsons, Zeke Brown and Andrew Rupp; a number of nieces and nephews also survive as well as a special cousin, Kelli Renslow and other cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 25th, at 10:30 A.M. at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Austin, Rev. J. B. Cantrell, and Rev. Mr. Tom Lewis Johnston

MR. TOM LEWIS JOHNSTON, age 88, of Gore-Subligna Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, August 15, 2015, at the residence. Born in Summerville on April 12, 1926, He was a son of the late T.P. and Zula Mae Ballenger Johnston. Mr. Johnston graduated from Subligna High School and attended West Georgia College for two years, then was drafted into the U.S. Army, during WW II. He served in Germany and Austria with the 36th Infantry Division and was an observer at the War Crimes Trials in Nuremburg, Germany; was a life member of the V.F.W. He was a cattle farmer and worked for the Georgia Department of Agriculture retiring after 28 years service.Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by a sister the late Libby Neal Rich.

Surviving are His wife, Nancy Mann Johnston; daughter, Sandi Johnston Cohen; son-Tom Neal Johnston (Lyn); step daughter, Tanya Queen (Ruben); step son, Stacy Mann (Tina); grand kids, Chuck Cohen and Samson Johnston; step grand kids, Amber Padgett, Lexie Mann, Macey Mann, Addie Queen, Mason Mann; niece, Joan Butler.

Mrs. Carroll was a member of South Commerce Church of Christ, retired from the winding department of Summerville Cotton Mill, and was preceded in death by husband, the late J. W. Mitchell, a daughter, Sandra Henderson, great granddaughter, Jamie DeLee, sister, Betty Faye McGinnis, and brother, Jack Cash, all died earlier.

Mr. Joe J. Hammond

MR. JOE J. HAMMOND, age 94, of Powder Springs, Georgia formerly of Summerville, Georgia passed day Thursday, August 7, 2014, in Powder Springs. Mr. Hammond was born in Chattooga County on October 25, 1919, a son of the late Joseph Fletcher and Agnes Jones Hammond. He was a watch repairman for 31 years, afterward worked as a watchman for a textile plant, for 15 years, until retirement. Mr. Hammond was a member of the First Presbyterian Church PCA, in Summerville.

Surviving are nephew, Henry Sanders and wife Evelyn, niece, Elizabeth Jefferson and husband Bob; two Great Nieces and Nephews; five Great Great Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. MARY A. JONES, age 94, of Summerville, Georgia, Pennville Community, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at the home of Bill and Susan Durham. She was preceded in death by parents, the late Robert “Bob” and Annie Jane Stoker McDaniel. Mrs. Jones was born on Lookout Mountain, Georgia, Chattooga County, on March 27, 1920. She was preceded in death by husband, Chester “Yankee” G. Jones, sisters-Jannie McDaniel Durham and Rosie McDaniel Smith; brothers, Enoch McDaniel, John McDaniel, and Earl McDaniel. Mrs. Jones was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was retired from the Georgia Rug Mill.

MS. SHIRLEY FAYE LEDGER, age 66, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Friday afternoon from injuries received in an automobile accident. A native of Georgetown, Indiana, She was born on February 13, 1948, to the late Lawrence Qinn Eskridge and Helen Margaret “Crickett” Ward Eskridge. She was a seamstress, retired from Echota Fabric. Ms. Ledger attended the Spring Creek Baptist Church; and was preceded in death by siblings, Mary Frances Eskridge, Doug Eskridge, and David Eskridge.

A Gordon County native, She was born on February 7, 1926 to the late Arch and Arrie Beck Reed. Mrs. Van Pelt was retired from the sewing department of Mars Glove, in LaFayette and was preceded in death by her husbands the late Ray Van Pelt and the late J.C. Miller; a Daughter; sisters, Sallie Reed, Annie Ruth Reed Waddell, and Jettie Benita Lankford, all died earlier.

Mr. Michael McWilliams

MR. MICHAEL McWILLIAMS, age 62, of Haywood Valley Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at his residence following an illness. He was born August 30, 1951, a son of the late William L. (Bob) McWilliams and Ruby Lee Scoggins McWilliams who survives. Mr. McWilliams attended the University of Georgia and Georgia State; was employed as a pharmacist with his Dad at Trion Drugs in the early 1970s. Later He worked at J & J Carpet in Dalton and Billy Graham Metals in Subligna area. He was very artistic, especially enjoyed doing Civil War figures, and participated in various Civil War reenactments. Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, the late Joey McWilliams and the late Tim McWilliams.

Surviving are His mother, Ruby McWilliams; sister-in-law, Martha McWilliams; and niece & fiancee, Christa Leeann McWilliams all of Haywood Valley and Chuck Campanelli of Teloga Community.

MR. HILL W. BOHANNON, age 92, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, July 3, 2014, in a Rome hospital. A native Chattooga Countian, He was born to the late Samuel and Nellie Underwood Bohannon on May 23, 1922. He received a electrical engineer degree from Georgia Tech and later attending the University of Tennessee and was retired from the U. S. Weather Service. Mr. Bohannon was a combat Veteran of the United States Air Force, B17 Bomber pilot in WW II and Korea, and a prisoner of war during WW II. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Madeline Davis Bohannon and a son the late Roger Bohannon.
Survivors include, son & daughter-in-law, Barry and Denise Bohannon; grandchildren, Rachel & Blake Payne all of Calhoun and Carrie Bohannon of Athens; great grandson, Bo Payne; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. BOB S. SCOTT, age 76, of Dalton, Georgia, formerly of Cartersville, Summerville, and Rome, Georgia passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014, evening in a Dalton hospital. A native of Bartow County, Georgia, He was born on March 31, 1938 to the late Oscar Clifford and Iris Estell Ingram Scott. Mr. Scott was Baptist by Faith, served in the U.S. Army, and was retired accountant for Dalton Utilities. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Jacquelin Marie Johnson Scott, to whom he married September 6, 1957; together they enjoyed writing choreography and teaching ballroom dancing since 1989.

Surviving are daughter-Vicki Marie Scott of Dalton; sons & daughter-in-law, Robert Van Scott and Michael & Amy Scott all of Rome; grandchildren-Johnathan Lee Scott, Christopher Michael Scott, and Rebecca Marie Scott.

She was a member of the West Summerville Baptist Church, and was retired from the spinning department of Harriett-Henderson Mills. Mrs. Kellett was preceded in death by her husband, the late L. D. Kellett, sisters, Gertrude Kellett, Lois Willingham, and Nola Watkins; brothers, Fred Tucker, Gene Tucker, Clyde Tucker.

Surviving are step daughter, Patricia Cooper; sisters-in-law, Jo Peace and Hughbelle Tucker; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. CLIFFORD WESLEY “TIP” McCOLLUM, age 88, of Trion, Georgia passed away Wednesday morning, June 25, 2014, in a Rome hospital. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia, He was born to the late John Wesley and Sarah Ovelle Barron McCollum on September 30, 1925. Mr. McCollum was a member of the Trion First Baptist Church, a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in WW II, and was retired Vice President of AmSouth Bank.

Surviving are His wife-Edith Morrow McCollum; daughter & companion, Ann McCollum and Terry Hawkins of Trion; son & daughter-in-law, John W. & June McCollum of Kennsington, GA; grandchildren, Emily & Travis Poole and Laura & Steven Butler; great grandson, Noah Butler; sister, Carolyn Dunwoody of LaFayette; special nephew, Greg Morrow; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. BOB PACKER, age 63, of John Jones Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday at his residence. Born in Floyd County, Georgia on December 18, 1950, he was a son of the late William Clyde and Miriam High Packer. Mr. Packer was retired lineman for North Georgia Electric and a member of Unity Baptist Church.

Surviving are His daughter, Tracy Gary of Trion; granddaughter, Kelsey Gary of Trion; sister-Jan Hardeman of Summerville, and a niece, Kristen Hardeman Kinsey.

Mildred Lane Wilkerson

On Monday, June 16, 2014, MILDRED LANE WILKERSON passed from this life into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born August 21, 1918 to the late Charlie Gordon and Lucy Peyton Lane. She was a lifeline resident of Trion, Georgia where she graduated as Valedictorian from Trion High School in 1935. She was owner and operator of Wilkerson’s Grocery Store in the Mountain View Community for many years and an active member of Central Avenue Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was a blessing and an inspiration to all who knew her, both family and friends.

She was the widow of the late Russell “Shorty” Wilkerson who went to the Father’s house January 28, 1998. They were married 61 years at the time of his death. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Ann Wilkerson Childers, February 9, 2000, her husband, Bill Childers, June, 2011, and a granddaughter, Tammy Harrison, four sisters, Velma Lane, Edna Pritchett, Alene McConkey, and Verna Adams, one brother, Robert “Rocky” Lane.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Doris & Paul Purcell of Trion, Mary & Jerry Fuller of Rome; grandsons & wives, Don & Patti Purcell, Bobby Purcell, Tony & Lisa Fuller, Wayne Childers, Jerry Childers; granddaughter, Melanie Falls; two “Special” Granddaughters, Leslie Fuller and Donna Childers; 13 Great Grandchildren; 2 Great Great Grandsons; 1 Great Great Granddaughter; 1 brother & wife, Clarence & Ozene Lane of Henagar, AL.; Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. FRANCES THOMAS HARDEMAN, age 89, of Allen Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014, in a Rome health care. A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia, She was born on February 2, 1925, a daughter of the late John Newton and Julia Elizabeth Johnson Thomas. Mrs. Hardeman was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church since age 9 years and was retired accounts payable clerk for the former Georgia Rug Mill. She was preceded in death by her husband the late R.C. (Rod) Hardeman, Sr., a son the late Rodney C. Hardeman, Jr.

Surviving are son and daughters-in-law-Gary R. and Arlene Hardeman and Jan Hardeman all of Summerville; three Grandchildren, four Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. TRAVIS EARL MONEY, age 72, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Saturday, June 7, 2014, morning in a Rome hospital. A native Chattooga Countian, He was born to the late Earl and Sybil Chesnut Money on April 11, 1942. Mr. Money was a member of the Menlo United Methodist Church, was an Auctioneer and along with his wife, Doris, owned and operated Travis Money Antique Auction Company, located in downtown Summerville. He was preceded in death by his daughter, the late Aleshia Renee Money.

Surviving are His wife, Doris Sumner Money; son and daughter-in-law, Jason Sumner Money and Nicole Money; grandchildren, Tatum Renee Money and Austin Sumner Money; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Ann and David Ray and Barbara and Buck Leath; brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy and Pat Money, Billy Sam Money, and Sara Money; several Nieces and Nephews.

Dorothy Claire Chandler McDonald 1934-2014 Dorothy Claire Chandler McDonald, surrounded by her family, went to be with The Lord on June 1, 2014. Dorothy was born December 26, 1934 in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1952 she attended SMU where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. After graduating from SMU in 1956 she attended Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky where she met Roger McDonald. They were married December 21, 1957 at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas. Dorothy served The Lord faithfully as a beloved wife and helpmate, teacher, friend, mother and grandmother. Her dedication to her family was absolute. Dorothy loved The Lord, His teachings and the scriptures with her whole heart. She is preceded in death by her parents Herb and Velma Chandler and is survived by her husband Roger McDonald; her children Diane Timms and her husband Tim; Rose Mary Taylor; Cindy Stroud and her husband Greg; her grandchildren Brad Timms and his wife Jordan; Scott Timms and his wife Taylor; Martha Taylor and her fiancé Justin Wright; Claire Taylor; Leah Taylor; Tommy Taylor; Stephanie Stroud; Katie Mills and her husband Matt; Maggie Stroud; and her great grandchildren Tyson, Brooke, and Joshua Timms. MR. TOLLIE FAY HURLEY, prominent Summerville, Georgia businessman and chairman of Southeast First National Bank passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014. Mr. Hurley was born February 21, 1934 in Summerville, Georgia to the late Tollie Ross Hurley and Anna Elsberry Hurley. He was a 1953 graduate of Summerville High School where he served as captain of the Summerville High football team that broke a 13 year losing streak to Trion High. Mr. Hurley was in the grocery business of 44 years, owning stores, with his father and brother, in Summerville, Trion, and Fort Payne, Al. He served as Chairman and CEO of Hurley Food, Inc., served on the board of directors of Dixie Savings Stores, Inc. of Chattanooga, TN., a founding board member, in 1967, of First National Bank; also served as chairman of the board of the bank and chairman of the board of Summerville/Trion Bancshares, Inc. Mr. Hurley was a past member of Summerville/Trion Rotary Club and the City of Summerville Industrial Development Board. He also served on the board of Bank of Adairsvile, Inc., the People’s Bank of Crawfordville, GA., Adairsville Bancshares, Inc. and was one of three investors who purchased Bank of Lowes in Lowes, KY. and moved it to Rome, GA. under the name of Heritage First Bank. Surviving are His wife, of 61 years, Linda Sue Woods Hurley; daughter and son-in-law- Suzanne Hurley Bowman and Timothy E. Bowman; sons and daughter-in-law, Edward F. Hurley, William B. Born in Illinois on January 21, 1954 was a son of the late Floyd Earl Davis, Sr. Mr. Davis was retired from the dye house of Mt. Vernon. Surviving are sons-Earl Davis, III of Rome, Matthew Davis of Kennesaw, and Patrick Davis of Trion; sisters-Rosetta Janes of Tennessee and Pat Skiorshi of Illinois; brother-Samuel Davis of Illinois; special friend-Melissa Cook; several Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive. MR. FRED BUDDY JOHNSON, age 73, of Tunnell Hill/Armuchee, Georgia passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, afternoon in a Dalton, Georgia hospital. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March 18, 1941, He was a son of the late Fred William and Flora Plott Johnson. Mr. Johnson attended the Floyd Springs Baptist Church, a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, and was retired truck driver for Bentlin, Inc. He was preceded in death by sister, the late Willadene Hamill and an infant daughter the late Melissa Johnson. Surviving are His wife, Amy Smith Johnson; daughter-Vicki Johnson of Rome; three Grandchildren, six Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. MRS, LORINE ARNOLD, age 61 of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, following a brief battle with cancer. She was born October 8, 1952 in Summerville, Georgia, a daughter of the late Dan and Madie Ledford Priest. Mrs. Arnold was preceded in death by her first husband Mike Ray on July 7, 1974, a son , Charlie Ray on September 30, 1974; her husband, Rick Arnold on May 29, 2012; brothers Riley Priest, Ollie Dan Priest, and Ed Bates; sisters Guy Lee McGuire and Essie McGuire. Surviving are sisters-Kathryn Padgett and Inez Blackmon both of Summerville; foster sister and mother Peggye Reynolds and Mary Hicks of Sand Rock, Alabama; step sons Lamar Arnold of Summerville John Arnold of Rome; Nieces, Nephews, and pets, Socks, and Her special baby, Lady. MS. ROBIN YVONNE WARE, age 50, of 6th Avenue, Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at her residence following an extended illness. Ms. Ware was born in Summerville, Georgia on July 31, 1963, a daughter of the late Robert Ware and Charlotte Maxine Perry Montgomery, who survives. She was a member of the New Spirit and Truth Church and before retirement, due to ill health, was employed at Jim’s Family Restaurant for twenty plus years. MRS. SHIRLEY DEAN McGUIRE, age 76, of Trion, Georgia passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, in a LaFayette Nursing Home. A native Chattooga countian, she was born on July 24, 1937 to the late Jessie Roy, Sr. and Annie Mae Dean McGraw. She attended Living Waters Ministries, was retired from Mount Vernon Mills after 34 years of service and was a member of the Quarter Century Club. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on June 13, 1947 to the late Carl Franklin and Annie Lois Roberts Bumgarner. Mr. Bumgarner served in the U. S. Army and the U. S. Navy. Mr. Kendrick served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1963, was a member of Lyerly Lodge #338 F & AM, was retired from General Electric, and together with his wife, the late JoAnn Wilkey Kendrick, owned and operated the former Round Table Restaurant. He was Baptist by Faith and in addition to his Wife was preceded in death by a brother, the late Tommy Kendrick. MR. FREDDIE EUGENE REYNOLDS, age 79, of Bittings Avenue, Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday evening in the local nursing home. A lifetime resident of Summerville, He was born on July 28, 1934 to the late Gordon and Lillian Tudor Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds was a retired automobile mechanic and for many years was a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts of America. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Wanda Carol McCaulie Reynolds in 2006. Surviving are daughter-Kimberly Smith of Ringgold; sons-Jackie Lee Reynolds of Ringgold and Tim Reynolds of Summerville; brothers-Henry Reynolds of Trion and Jerry Reynolds of LaFayette; grandchildren-Jonathan Reynolds U.S. Army, Ciera Reynolds, and Justin Smith of Ringgold. Mr. Robert Hugh Hawkins, age 81, of Cloudland, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014, evening in Austell, Georgia. A native of Cloudland, He was born on February 4, 1933 to the late Riley Monroe and Susie Alma Chislom Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins was a carpenter by trade and a member of the Menlo First Baptist Church. He supervised the construction of Nuclear cooling towers at Tullahoma, Tennessee and Scottsboro, Alabama. He was a Veteran of the Korean War. He loved his Family and Lookout Mountain and was a lifelong proud resident of Cloudland, Georgia. He was preceded in death by the following siblings-Gordon Hawkins, Sidney Hawkins, Myrtle Willingham, Fred Hawkins, Sudie Mae Hawkins, Ralph Hawkins, Thelma Wofford, Sue Reeves, Max Hawkins, and Riley Hawkins. Mr. Dawson was a well know cattle farmer and logger, a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, and a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are His wife, Betty Dawson; daughter and spouse, Kay and Lawrence Broome of Summerville; grandson, John (Becky) Broome; granddaughter, Laura (C.J.) Cady; sisters-Frankie (Harold) Gordon of Gore and Jan (Harold) Ragland of Lyerly; Gene Dawson, Joe (Mary Frances) Dawson of Gore; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 3rd) at 3:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiating, interment in Greenhills Memory Garden, Active Pallbearers-Danny McGraw, Britt Ragland, Shane Ragland, Greg Shaw, Harold Ragland, Rick Hammond, John Broome, C.J. Cody, Mark Gordon, and Ross Lowry; Honorary Pallbearers-William Mitchell, Jeff Cargle, Doyol Momon, Stacey Gray, Jimmy Hix, Andy Allen, and Calen Cooper. Mrs. Betty Diane Leonard

MRS. BETTY DIANE LEONARD, age 58, of Shinbone Valley Road-Menlo, Georgia passed away Thursday, January 30, 2014, in a Rome hospital. Born in Trion, Georgia, She was a daughter of the late John C. Bandy and Betty June Green Bandy Pope who survives. She was a member of Chelsea Baptist Church and employed in the knitting department of Best Mfg. Company. Mrs. Leonard was preceded in death by a brother, the late John Duel Bandy. Surviving are husband-Jimmy Leonard; mother and step father-Betty and Wayne Pope of Menlo; daughter-Connie Geimer of Centre, AL.; son-Jams Michael Leonard of Menlo; special friend-Becky Gable; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 1st, at 2:30 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, interment in Bandy Cemetery. Mr. Rufus Dodson Hickman Jr.

MR. RUFUS DODSON HICKMAN, JR., age 83, of Highland Avenue, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014, in a Rome hospital. Born in Black Oak, Arkansas on May 30, 1930, a son of the late Rufus Dodson Hickman, Sr. and Clare Anita Robertson Hickman. He was retired from Bi Lo Grocery Store and was preceded in death by his wife the late Vivian Stevens Hickman and step son-the late Richard Clyde Ayo. Surviving are daughters-Bonnie Scarlett and Nina Fitzpatrick both of Fl.; sons-Rufus Dodson Hickman, Ill and James Hickman both of Summerville, Russell Hickman of Fl., Dennis of La., and Stewart Hayes of Miss.; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive. In accordance with Mr. Hickman’s wishes, the Body was cremated. Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. Helen C. Hudson

MRS. HELEN C. HUDSON, age 89, of Rome, Georgia former longtime resident of Summerville, passed away Monday, January 27, 2014, in a Rome health care. She was born on December 16, 1924 to the late William Richard and Rosa Dell Estes Chappelear. Mrs. Hudson was a member and former pianist, for many years, of Summerville First Baptist Church; she was retired from the Georgia Rug Mill and was preceded in death by her husband, the late Wilburn Hudson, sisters, the late Patricia Ann Holliday and Mary Dell Welch, and brother, the late Henry Chappelear. Surviving are daughter-Cheryl Allen of Rome; sons-Kelly Hudson of Cedar Bluff, AL., and Richard Hudson of California; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 1st, at 11:30 A.M. from the Summerville First Baptist Church with Rev. Doyle Waters officiating, interment in Greenhills Memory Garden. Active Pallbearers will be Family members; Honorary Pallbearers will be Charlie Williams, O.G. Moorehead, Jim Meredith, Harmon Petitt, Billy Petitt, and Jim Parker. Mr. Robert Moser

MR. ROBERT MOSER, age 85, of Back Penn Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, (January 21, 2014) evening in a Rome hospital. A native of Chicago, Illinois, He was born on March 4, 1928 a son of the late Rudolph and Mary Moser. Mr. Moser served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps during Korea, was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, and was preceded in death by his wife the late Bessie M. Raines Moser, and brothers, the late Rudolph Moser and the late Raymond Moser. Surviving are sister-in-law- Alice Moser of McHenry, Ill; several Nieces, Nephews, Grand Nieces and Grand Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 25th, at 3 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Art Graves officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. Mr. Dan Young

MR. DAN YOUNG, age 79, (known as Deputy Dan) of Rose Circle, Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday evening at his residence. Born in Valley Head, AL. on November 27, 1934, He was a son of the late Floyd and Leona Clark Young. Mr. Young was a retired deputy from the Chattooga County Sherriff’s office. He was preceded in death by first wife, the late Annie Harris Young, siblings, the late Billy Young, the late Lorene Moore, the late Margaret Faye Young, and the late Charlotte Young. Survivors include wife-Barbara E. Young; daughter-Angie Williamson of Trion; son-Allen Young of Douglasville; Step-children- Cindy Romines of Fort Oglethorpe; Sheryl Campbell of Summerville, Jan Allen and Robbie Allen both of Lyerly; sisters-Nancy Wilson, Frances Cordle both of Summerville, and Linda Pledger of Orlando, Fl.; brothers-Rev. Richie (Bo) Young of Jamaica and Budd Young of Summerville; nine grandchildren, eight Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014, at 2:00 P.M. from the West Summerville Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Young, Rev. Lavon Humphrey, Rev. Kevin Woods and Rev. MRS. AUDREY ELLEN “SUSIE” CARROLL, age 71, of LaFayette, Georgia passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in a Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia health care. Born in LaFayette, Georgia, on March 3, 1942, She was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Cora Lee Day Brown. She was retired maintenance supervisor for the LaFayette Housing Authority and was preceded in death by her husband, the late Larry Carroll. Surviving are daughters-Cora Denise “Dee” Winters & partner, Kriston Taylor of Summerville and Elena Rochelle Carroll of LaFayette; sons-Ace and Melinda Bailey and Andy Anderson of LaFayette and Berry Carroll of Chattanooga; sisters-Hazel Newsom of LaFayette and Wanda Angel of Chickmauga; brothers-Jerry (Diane) Brown of Birmingham, AL., Richard Brown of Woodstock, Randell (Barbara) Brown of Rock Spring; Nine Grandchildren, Two Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews. DENNIS LEE HOWARD, age 61, of Raymond Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at his residence following an illness. Born in Chattooga County, Georgia on May 1, 1952, He was a son of the late Horace Edward Howard and Betty Ruth McCollum Howard who survives. Mr. Howard was retired from the packing department of Mt. Vernon Mills; he had also previously worked with Bigelow-Sanford and later Mohawk Mills. Surviving are His wife-Melanie Howard; Mother-Betty McCollum Howard of Trion; daughters and spouse’s-Faith and Jerry Wigley of Trion, Jennifer and Kevin Binkley, Sr. of Summerville; step daughters Sherri Arnold of Summerville, Latoya Adams of Mississippi, and Ashley Adams of Summerville; sons-Jamey Arnold of Lebanon, PA, Tyrone Adams of Rome; sisters-Diane and Riley Flowers of Macon and Donna Slayton of Trion; brother-David and Kathy Howard of LaFayette; 8 Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.
