MRS. MARY JACQULYN WOFFORD, age 58, of Davis Street-Summerville, Georgia, Berryton Community, passed away Friday, December 22, 2012, at the residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born on March 12, 1954 to Bobby Joe and Georgia Carol Helton Davis, who survive. She was retired from retail sales and was preceded in death by husband the late William David Wofford. Surviving are Son-Justin Wofford of Rome; Parents-Jo and Carol Davis of Berryton; sister-Freda Davis of Lindale, GA.; half brother-Bobby Joe Davis, Jr. of Jacksonville, FLA.; several Nieces and Nephews. Memorial service was held Saturday, December 29th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Mickey Skates officiating. MRS. ONA BEE HURLEY, age 85, of Adairsville, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, passed away Friday, December 28, 2012, in a Rome hospital. Born in Boaz, Alabama on March 28, 1927, She was a daughter of the late Joseph Arthur and Mattie Gardner Wilson. Mrs. Hurley was Church of God by Faith, and was employed by Harriett-Henderson Mills in the winding department retiring several years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Fred Billie Hurley. Surviving are daughters-Wanda Brady of Adairsville, Nancy Harris of LaFayette, Freddie Thomas of Roberts Dale, Al., and Debbie Hare of Andalusia, Al.; sons-Ronald Hurley and Donald Hurley both of Adairsville; 13 Grandchildren, several Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 31st, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Malcolm Harris and Rev. John Mann officiating, interment in Lyerly Cemetery. MR. RUBEN J. JOHNSTON, age 61, of Highway #48, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 23, 2012, in a Rome hospital, after a brief illness. He was a lifetime native of Chattooga County, Georgia, born on November 5, 1951 to the late Julius Vernon (Bud) Johnston and Mary Alice Hackler Johnston. He spent the majority of his life in the logging profession, and was a Baptist by Faith. Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by a sister, the late Shirley Sentell and brothers , the late Gene & Joe Johnston. Surviving are His loving wife of more than 30 years, Thelma E. Johnston; children-Matthew Johnston of Fort Payne, AL., Kim Campbell of Kentucky, Kristy Johnston and Jeremy Johnston both of Lyerly; brothers-Fred & Don Johnston both of Summerville, Frank Johnston of Trion, and Roger Johnston of Centre, AL.; 12 Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 27th, at 11:00 A.M. from the J. D. MRS. VIRGINIA B. TUCKER, age 80, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Saturday, December 22, 2012, in the local nursing home. Born in the Chelsa Community of Chattooga County, Georgia on August 18, 1932; a daughter of the late Brown and Ethel Denton Wofford. She was a lifetime member of Menlo Baptist Church and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. The former owner/operator of Tucker Grocery Store, later working as creeler @ Mohawk Industries, and also was a CNA in health care. Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her beloved husband, the late Lee Roy “Bud” Tucker on July 12, 1994, brothers-the late LeRoy Wofford and Captain Bobbie Wofford, and a brother-in-law-the late James D. Baker. 

 Surviving are Her children & spouses-Marsha & Bob Farrow, Dale & Carolyn Tucker; grandchildren-Ashley Farrow, Autumn & Brian Baggett, Megan & Cassey Ray, Savannah Tucker; great grandchildren-Michaela Baggett, Brianna Baggett, Brandon Baggett, Connor Ray, Ella Ray; sister & brother-in-law-Martha & Jerry Strickland; brother & sister-in-law-Buddy & Hazel Wofford; several Nieces & Nephews.

MRS. BUELL P. HAWKINS, age 93, of Turner Road-Rome, Georgia passed away Saturday, December 8, 2012, in the local nursing home. A native of Chattooga County, She was born to the late Ralph David and Vera Cox Pickle on July 1, 1919. Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church, retired house keeper from Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Ralph David Hawkins, also several Sisters and Brothers. Surviving are daughters-Judy Touchstone of Rome and Kay Ellen Turner of Augusta; sons-Robert William (Bob) Hawkins of Lyerly and Hugh David Hawkins of Augusta; brother-Frank Pickle of Summerville; Ten Grandchildren; several Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive. MR. JAMES MILLER, age 64, of Maplewood Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 2, 2012, at his residence. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, He was born to the late Fred C. and Ruth Benson Miller on May 26, 1948. Mr. Miller was retired from Southeastern Industries and a Veteran of Viet Nam serving in the U.S. Army. Surviving are wife-Naomi Sue Miller; son-James Douglas Miller & wife Erica of Subligna; daughters-Jessica Vanpelt and Lindsey Eller & husband Jerry all of Summerville; grandchildren-Zachary & Alyssa Miller, Kylia, Kassidi, & Kallee Vanplet; sisters-Brenda Kuhn of FL. & Gale Johnson of Rossville; Nieces & Nephews also survive. MS. TERESA ANN (TERRY) GENTRY, age 52, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning, November 30, 2012, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 11, 1960, a daughter of the late Robert Joseph Gentry and Sarah Ann Wells Gentry who survives. Besides her mother, Sarah Ann Wells Gentry of Summerville, Ms. Gentry is survived by a sister and brother-in-law Sherrie and Steven Helton of Summerville; Brother and sister-in-law John and Teresa Gentry of Cartersville. Nephew, Will Gentry and Niece, Eryn Gentry. Several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 2nd, at 3:00 P.M. from graveside in West Hill Cemetery with Ministers’ Jeff Burns and John Paul Burns officiating. DR. EARL BEATTY, JR., age 92, of Fort Valley, Georgia passed away Monday, November 26, 2012. Born in Summerville, Georgia on December 11, 1919 to the late Dr. Earl Beatty, Sr. and Addie Willard Beatty. A graduate of Darlington School and Emory University School of Dentistry, He was a Veteran of WW II serving in the Army as Regimental Dental Surgeon of the 508th Parachute Infantry. He saw combat in Europe and served as General Eisenhower’s Honor Guard at USFET Headquarters in Germany after the war ended in 1945. He remained in the Reserves and was transferred to the Air Force with service in Korea and Viet Nam until retirement in 1973 with the rank of Colonel. Dr. Beatty was a member of numerous dental associations, serving as President of the Central Dental Society in 1967. He was an elder in the Fort Valley Presbyterian Church, a Mason, Shriner, and member of many other civic organizations. He was preceded in death by first wife, Martha Rackley Beatty and second wife, Nita Wilder Graham Beatty. Surviving are son and wife, Earl (Jean) Beatty, III; stepson, James E. Graham; four Grandchildren and two Great Grandchildren. Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 1st, at 11 A.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, interment in the Family lot of Summerville Cemetery with full military honors. MRS. MATTIE M. BROOME, age 95, of West Armuchee Road, Subligna community, Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at her residence. She was born in Walker County, Georgia on July 25, 1917, a daughter of the late John M. and Martha Edwards Fowler. Was preceded in death by Her husband the late Faye H. Broome. She was a member of the Subligna Baptist Church. Surviving are daughters-Charlotte Chapman of Subligna, Shelia Bridges of Ringgold, and Debra Jackson of West Armuchee; sons-Marion Broome of Calhoun, Jackie Broome of East Armuchee, and Billy Broome of Summerville; 15 Grandchildren, 21 Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews. MRS. WILMA NIX TOLES, age 89, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Monday, November 12, 2012, afternoon in the local nursing home. A daughter of the late James William (Will) and Eula Williams Nix, she was born on March 9, 1923 in Chattooga County, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Charles Fletcher Toles, Sr. to whom she was married September 20, 1947 also preceded by two sisters and Six brothers. Mrs. Toles was retired from the sewing department of Best Manufacturing, Menlo, and a member of Best’s Silver Club. Mrs. Toles was a faithful, and the last surviving charter member of West Berryton Faith Temple. Surviving are son & daughter-in-law Charles, Jr. and Jo Ann Toles of Menlo; Grandchildren-Clark & Melissa Miller; Bradley & Julie Wolfrum, Heather McClung, Farrah McClung, Lindsay Patty, & Jimmy Patty; eight Great Grandchildren; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Estelle and Lamar Toles and Iris Toles; several nieces and nephews also survive. MRS. MABLE CUNDIFF, age 84, of Back Penn Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday morning at her residence. A daughter of the late Dewey and Mary Gentry Padgett, she was born on July 5, 1928 and was preceded in death by her husband the late John A. Cundiff, Jr. on April 21, 1995, and a son the late William Holt. Mrs. Cundiff was Church of God by faith. Surviving are sons-Jimmy Cundiff, Johnny Cundiff, Ray Cundiff all of Summerville, and Robert Cundiff of Arab, Alabama. Daughters- Linda Bray and Kay Padgett of Summerville. Sisters- Odell Hudgins and Mildred White of Dalton. A brother Charles Padgett of Sugar Valley, Georgia; 13 Grandchildren, 37 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Elizabeth Wilks

After a long and joyous life, Elizabeth Gravlee Wilks passed away on November 1st at a family residence in Summerville, Georgia. Longtime resident of the Birmingham area, Mrs. Wilks was predeceased by her husband Robert Hobson Wilks. Mrs. Wilks is survived by her son Robert Bradley “Bob” Wilks of Birmingham; her daughter Nell Wilks Farrar and son-in-law Arch Farrar of Summerville, Georgia; two grand-daughters, Challis Elizabeth Farrar Latta with her husband Andy Latta of Gainesville, Georgia; and Mary Catherine Farrar of Summerville, Georgia. A descendant of the Gravlee-Nalls and Newton-Chambliss families of Fayette County, Elizabeth Gravlee was born on November 9, 1921 in Newtonville, Alabama. She graduated from Fayette High School prior to entering the University of Alabama where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education Degree in 1944. Her career in education continued for many years as she taught high school classes in home economics in Fayette County, Talladega County and Jefferson County. In 1968, she was named Supervisor of Vocational Home Economics for the Jefferson County Board of Education, and began a career in which she thrived and maintained high standards for the vocational home economics departments. Always growing and learning, she earned her Masters of Arts in Teaching from the University of Montevallo in 1973. Following her retirement in 1987, Mrs. Wilks continued to enjoy her fellow educators through her membership in Delta Kappa Gamma. She also found time for travel abroad as well as to famous locations in the United States. In addition, she enjoyed time with family, friends and church groups. She was a longtime resident of the Altadena Valley area and member of the Lakeside Baptist Church. A memorial service was helds Saturday, November 3rd at 11 o’clock in the morning at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home located at 10355 Commerce Street, Summerville, Georgia. Family received friends in the hour prior to the service. Interment was at Memory Hill Cemetery in Albertville, Alabama immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice or to Lakeside Baptist Church, 2865 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35243. Earle Rainwater Funeral Home was in charge of services.

MRS. TENNIE RUTH TIDMORE, age 84, of Adairsville, Georgia, formerly of Lyerly, passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at Her residence. Born in Chattooga County, Georgia on May 21, 1928, She was a daughter of the late John Frank and Susie Akins Whisenant. Mrs. Tidmore was a member of Lyerly First Baptist Church, was retired from the maintenance department of Bigelow-Sanford-Georgia Rug Mill, and was co-owner/operator of Tidmore Washateria in Lyerly. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Vernon Lindenberg Tidmore, also several Sisters and Brothers died earlier. Surviving are daughter-Lynda Steele of Adairsville; sons-David Earnest Tidmore of Cloudland and John Frank Tidmore of Lyerly; grandchildren-Alisha Steele, Jennifer Malone, Tina Steele, Derdia Adams, Derick Tidmore, and Keri Beth Jones; sixteen Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. MRS. KATHY LYNN DODD, age 49, of Ramey Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012, morning at her residence following an extended illness. She was born in Rome, Georgia on July 31, 1963, to the late Patsey Mozell LuAllen Collins and Thomas Lamar Collins who survives. She was a Homemaker. Mrs Dodd was preceded in death by her Mother, and brothers-Michael Anthony Collins and Thomas Ray Collins. Surviving are husband-Neal Ashmore; father-Thomas Collins; daughters-Kaitlyn Ashmore and Kelsie Ashmore all of Summerville; sons-Jesse (Christy) Dodd of Rome and Bryan (Breanna) Ashmore of Summerville; brother-Gary F. Collins; sister-Margie Collins both of Summerville; grandchildren-Jordan Dodd, Taylor Dodd, Devan Fowler, Shelby Rhodes, and Evan Ashmore; mother-in-law-Ann Bass of Summerville. A native Chattoogan, She was born to the late Robert Wesley and Mary Eva Brown Dover on January 12, 1920. Mrs. Green was a member of Berryton Baptist Church, retired from the rubberizing department of Georgia Rug Mill, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Leonard Green, sons-Jerry Green, Larry Green, and Ray Green; grandsons-Jay Crider, Duel Bandy, and Joey Green; sisters-Grace Skates, Lucille Lindsey and Beulah Cummings; brothers: Arville Dover, Albert Dover, Harve Dover, Tiny Dover and Morris Dover Surviving are daughters-Betty June Pope of Menlo, Nancy Crider of Summerville, Charlotte Woody of Berryton, and Sadie Croy of Lyerly; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren also survive. Born in Floyd County, Georgia on January 17, 1942, She was the daughter of the late Jessie R. (Peck) Baxter and Bernie McKowen Baxter. Ms. Brown attended the East Trion Church of God and was retired from the finishing lab of Mt. Vernon/Riegel Textile Mills. Surviving are daughter-Kay Brown of Summerville; son-Randy Brown of Kennesaw; aunt-Vestal Hudson of Jacksonville, FL.; granddaughters-Jamie Siggelko and Sarah Brown; several Cousins also survive. MRS. FRANCES PONDER, age 82, of Hammond Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, October 8, 2012, morning. She was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, born in Trion, Georgia on June 13, 1930, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Mae Bohannon Gilmer, who died while Mrs. Ponder was a young child and was reared by her grandmother the late Maebelle Gilmer. Surviving are husband-Henderson F. Ponder; two Daughters and sons-in-law- Claudette and Jerry Mahan of Summerville and Jenette and Coleman Slay, Jr. of Armuchee; Five Grandchildren, Four Great Grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 10th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Bryant and Rev. David Craven officiating, interment in the Family Plot of Summerville Cemetery. MR. CARL D. SANFORD, age 71, of Holland-Chattoogaville Road, Lyerly, Georgia passed away Friday (October 5, 2012) in a Rome hospital. A native of Round Mountain, Alabama, He was born to the late Cicero and Rena Ward Sanford on December 17, 1940. Mr. Sanford graduated Mississippi State University on a football scholarship and began a forty year manufacturing Executive career in Summerville, Georgia with Georgia Rug Mill, later Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill; then to Canada, then with BASF/Honeywell in Dalton. Afterward retiring to the 750 acre Family farm on Holland-Chattoogaville Road. Surviving are His wife-Tippy Sanford; sons-Colter Sanford of Chattoogaville and Tyler of Summerville; grandchildren-Carlie Sanford, Colton Sanford, Ayla Sanford, and Cason Sanford; sister-Dixie Messer of Cedar Bluff, AL; brothers-Sam Sanford of Cedar Bluff, AL and D.C. Sanford of Jamestown, Al; several Nieces and Nephews. His Family will receive friends Sunday, October 7th, from 3 until 5 P.M. @ the residence on Holland-Chattoogaville Road-Lyerly. WILSON

MR. CHARLES B. WILSON, age 87 of Hwy. #48-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

A native of Dutton, Alabama, he was born to the late James Aubry Wilson, Sr. and Lena Ada Eva Gibson Wilson on October 12, 1924 and was known to his many friends as “Charlie B.” He moved to Summerville in 1936, graduated from Summerville High School, and married the love of his life, Dora Ellen Bynum on April 16, 1943. After a month of married bliss, he entered the U. S. Army and after training, landed in the “D” Day Invasion, June 6, 1944, in the third wave on Utah Beach-Normandy, France; made His way through France into Belgium where he also fought in the “Battle of the Bulge”. For his service Mr. Wilson received many medals and commendations from the U.S. Army and was awarded the Medal of Honor from France only a few years ago.  Mr. Wilson was a member, deacon, and led the Church Choir, of West Summerville Baptist Church; and was preceded in death by siblings-Claudine Fowler, Maughee Evans, Ewert Wilson, Lorenzo Wilson, and James A. Wilson, Jr. 

 Surviving are his Wife, Ellen Bynum Wilson; Daughter, Phyllis (Earle) Rainwater; Sisters, Montez Gladney and Joan Renslow all of Summerville; Grandchildren, Tracy (Tracy) Rainwater, Schawna (Vince) Collier, Clint (Amy) Rainwater; Great Grandchildren, Emily Marie Rainwater, Lauren Elizabeth Rainwater, Abbie Lynn Rainwater,  Carrie Elizabeth Martin and Chris Allen; Great Great Grandson, Graydon Allen; several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.

MRS. DOROTHY CHAPPELEAR, age 87, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, September 23, 2012, in the local nursing home. She was born in Henagar, Alabama October 6, 1924 to the late Hugh Roy and Ella Anderson Riley. Mrs. Chappelear was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. MR. W. L. MARTIN, age 75, of Davis Road-Trion, Georgia, Mt. View Community, passed away Monday, September 17, 2012, at his residence. A native of Barrow County, Georgia, He was born to the late Willis L. and Martha Gaddis Martin on February 26, 1937. Mr. Martin was a Veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Army Paratroopers and a retired auto body repairman. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Essie Vernon Martin and daughter the late Diane Sparks. Surviving are grandsons-Adam Gorham and Chad Campbell both of Summerville; several Great Grandchildren. At Mr. Martin’s request the body will be cremated and there will be no funeral service. He was born in Walker County Georgia on September 24, 1924, a son of the late Deed L. and Lillie Davis Ward. Mr. Ward was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church, a Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army Paratrooper 82nd Airborn, and was retired from Riegel Textile Corporation. She was born on March 19, 1920 in Walker County, Georgia to the late William McKinley and Myrtis Rosalee Brown Adams. Mrs. Henderson was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church, the American Legion and V.F.W. Auxiliaries’, and was retired from Mt. Vernon/Riegel Mill. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Hobert Henderson on September 7, 1993. Surviving are daughters and spouses-Maxine Henderson and Steve Drummond of Gibson, GA. and Phyllis and Larry Stansell of Trion; brother-Freeman E. MRS. WILLIE BELL RODGERS, age 88, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, in the local nursing home. Mrs. Rodgers was born on September 11, 1923, in Ackerman, Mississippi, a daughter of the late Lee Boyce and Clara Reid Bruce. She was a member of Central Avenue Baptist Church, a retired sales clerk for Bohannon’s clothing store, and was preceded in death by her husbands’ the late Odell Minor on March 24, 1967 and the late John Grady Rodgers on February 3, 2012. Surviving are Her sisters-Melba Gammill of Louisville, Miss. and Nella Dean Melton of Atlanta; several Nieces and Nephews also survive. She was born in Trion, Georgia on August 28, 1938, a daughter of the late John Wesley Kitchens and Gladys Sitton Kitchens Martin. Mrs. Johnson was a member of North Summerville Baptist Church, a long established hair dresser, and had served on the Chattooga County School Board of Eduaction for 20 plus years. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Tom Johnson and brother, the late Bill Kitchens. Sarafrances Boyd Strickland, 93, of Trion, died June 13, 2012. Memorial Service, after a brief illness, was Saturday (June 15th) in Trion at 11:00 A.M. from the Trion United Methodist Church with Rob Pierce officiating. Sadie was born July 18, 1918, in Augusta, Georgia. She was the daughter of Randolph Bradford Boyd and Lena Godbee Boyd. She graduated from The University of Georgia and was a life time teacher of young children. She was incredibly active in her family, friendships and community. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 glorious years A.J. (Strick) Strickland. Survivors include two children Lonnie Strickland and daughter in law Kitty Strickland of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Brad Strickland and daughter in law Barbara Strickland of Dothan, Alabama. She had three grandchildren; Matthew Strickland of Mobile, Alabama; Lena Levendoski and Grandson in law Geoff of Nashville, Tennessee, and Glenn David Strickland of Biloxi, Mississippi. She also had two great grand children, Henry Langston Levendoski and Katharine Parker Levendoski of Nashville, and countless cousins and friends. Sadie as it turns out is hard to describe in a short space or a few lines. She loved many and many loved her. She was the eternal optimist. She was delighted in her friendships, books, bridge, her church and laughter. She enjoyed everything from traveling around the world to fishing on Weiss Lake. Teaching was one of her great loves and anyone who encountered her was more than likely taught something new. She captivated her family and her friends with her charm, her grace and her outlook on life. The legacy that she leaves behind is one of education, understanding heritage, family, friendships and joy. Her very long life was a blessing to us all. Army serving in Korean Conflict, and was a retired truck driver. She was born in Trion, Georgia February 13, 1924, daughter of the late W.H. and Dora Rape Spraggins. She was a lifetime member of the Alpine Community Church graduating from Menlo High School in 1942, where she played on the girls basketball team. She was a retiree of the sample department of Best Mfg. Company. Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her husband, the late Roy Lesley Tucker; a grandson, Brian Avery Tucker; sisters, Ruth Della Monica, Charlsie Mae (Charlie) Miller, Louise (Shug) Martin, Beatrice (Pete) Hall; brothers, Julius (Duke) Spraggins, D.W. (Bawdy) Spraggins, Andrew (Snowball) Spraggins, and D.F. (Sike) Spraggins.

A native of Berryton, Georgia, She was born to the late Dallas and Virginia Koonce Berry on October 24, 1926. Mrs. Helton was a member of West Rome Baptist Church and was a secretary for the Rome News Tribune retired. She was preceded in death by husband the-late Alvin H. Helton, brother-the late Billy Berry, and nephew-the late John Berry. REV. J. B. McNEIL, age 81, of Menlo, Georgia passed away Thursday morning (February 23, 2012) at His residence. A native of Franklin, Georgia He was born to the late H. A. and Bessie Brittain McNeil on June 25, 1930. Rev. McNeil was a member of the North Georgia Conference of United Methodist Church having pastored numerous Churches during his career. MRS. JACQUELIN MARIE SCOTT, age 75, of Dalton, Georgia passed away Saturday night, February 4, 2012 in a Dalton hospital. Mrs. Scott was born in Rome, Georgia on June 22, 1937, a daughter of the late George Henry and Clarice Everett Johnson. Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by two brothers- Jerry Lee Johnson and Michael Henry Johnson. Survivors include her husband Bob Scott; daughter- Vicki Marie Scott of Dalton; sons- Robert Van Scott and Michael Lee Scott (Amy Lennette) all of Rome. Grandchildren- Johnathan Lee Scott, Christopher Michael Scott and Rebecca Marie Scott; dogs- B.J., Abbey and Lady. Calvary Baptist Church, retired from the spinning department of Riegel Textile Corporation, and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by husband the late Lawrence W. Powell, Sr. Surviving are daughter-Patsy McGarty of Rex, GA; sons-Sam White of Dallas, GA, Dennis White of Odgen, KA, LaVon White, Jr. of Memphis, TN, and Douglas Powell of Mentone; sisters-Orleane Miller of Flint, MI, Ann Brown of Trion; brothers-D.C. MR. JOHN GRADY RODGERS, age 85, of Trion, Ga. Passed away Friday afternoon in the local Nursing Home. Mr. Rodgers was born in Broometown, Alabama March 17, 1926, a son of the late John Newton and Verdie Beatrice Gardner Rodgers. Mr. Rodgers was a Member and Deacon of Central Avenue Baptist Church, a veteran of World War II serving in the U. S. Navy, and a retired self-employed Carpenter. He was preceded in death by siblings: Jessie Rodgers, Don Rodgers, Wayne Rodgers, Bill Rodgers, Evelyn White, Winnie Robinson and Susie Mitchell. Survivors include his wife Willie Bell Rodgers; sister Luckie Bynum of Chattanooga, TN; brother -J. E. Rodgers of Colonial Heights, VA.; several Nieces and Nephews. A native of Walker County, Georgia, She was born to the late William P. and Zora Mae King Oliver on September 5, 1923. Mrs. Thomas was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was retired from sewing department of Best Mfg., and was preceded in death by her husband the late Rev. Hugh C. Thomas, a daughter the late Sandra Annette Thomas, and a number of Siblings. MR. PAUL E. KING, SR., 87, passed away the evening of January 30, 2012 after a short illness. He was married to Betty Hopkins King for 51 years who passed away in 2004. They are the parents of three children, Karen King Driskell of Alpharetta, Georgia, Jill King Riggs of Longwood, Florida, and Paul E. King, Jr. of Johns Creek, Georgia; they have five grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth King Abney of Rome also survive. Mr. King was a native of Menlo, Georgia. He came from humble beginnings being brought up by his mother after his father passed away when he was five years old. He attended North Georgia Military College and served in the Air Force as a Lieutenant during World War II. After returning home from Europe, he graduated from the University of Georgia in Athens, and began a long career in the life insurance industry in Atlanta. Later, his career took him to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he rose to the rank of President of Minister’s Life Insurance Marketing Group. In 1976 he relocated to Orlando, Florida with his family to start his own insurance agency, which he successfully ran for the balance of his career. Mr. King was a member of the Wekiva Presbyterian Church in Longwood, Florida for many years. The family will receive visitors, Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, Georgia. MRS. ERNESTINE V. BLEDSOE, age 91, of Summerville, Georgia, formerly of Pinehurst, Georgia passed away Thursday, January19, 2012, in Summerville. A native of Vienna, Georgia, She was born to the late Ernest L. and Bertie Walden Christmas on January 29, 1920. Before retirement Mrs. Bledsoe was City Clerk for the City of Pinehurst, Georgia and was a member of the Pinehurst Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Thomas J. Bledsoe, sister-the late Evelyn Wadsworth, and son-in-law Guy Chambless III Surviving are daughters-Marie (Curt) Hutchinson of Chapin, S.C. and Edie Chambless of Summerville; sons-Ronnie (Dena) Bledsoe of Vienna and Bryce (Beth) Bledsoe of Unadilla, Georgia; brother-Ernest Christmas, Jr. of Vienna; grandchildren-Curtis Hutchinson, Ken Hutchinson, Guy Chambless, IV, Beth McCleskey, Tommy Bledsoe, Wendy Woodrum, Rhonda Arnold, Jeff Bledsoe, and Scott Bledsoe; thirteen Great Grandchildren. A native Chattooga Countian She was born to the late Robert Sterling and Annie Ruth Williams Speer on March 14, 1929. Mrs. Hunter was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and co-founder and Vice President of Hunter Furniture Company in Gore. Along with Her parents was preceded in death by a son the late James Robert Hunter. Surviving are her husband-James H. Mrs. Velma L. Bridges, age 91, of Union Point, GA, formerly of Chattooga County, passed away Wednesday morning, January 18, 2012, in Union Point, Georgia. A daughter of the late Ellis and Addie Cargle Mathis, Mrs. Bridges was born April 11, 1920 in Little Sand Mountain, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Gordon Lee Bridges, and a son, the late Bobby Leon Bridges. Mrs. Bridges was Baptist by faith and was a retired Delta Airlines Accountant.
