Mr. Eddie Ray Teague

MR. EDDIE RAY TEAGUE, age 77, of Orchard Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday morning, December 20, 2020, in a Rome hospital.  Mr. Teague was born in Chattooga County, Georgia on April 18, 1943, to the late Charlie and Dellia Ester Busby Teague.  He was Baptist by Faith, retired machine operator for Mohawk Industries, and in addition to his Parents was preceded in death by his wife the late Geneva Espy Teague on October 25, 2019 and a son, the late Jeffery Lynn (Jeff) Teague on December 3, 2019.

 

            Surviving are son, Ray Teague; sister, Shirley Hughes; grandson, Cody Teague; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

 

            Funeral and interment service will be held 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 22, 2020, from Graveside, in West Hill Cemetery at Trion; with Rev. Wayne Pace officiating, Pallbearers, Tye McGuire, Tony Dowdy, Scott Hughes, Cory Espy, Bryan Rogers, and Tracy Rogers.

Mr. Thomas Ralph Millican

MR. THOMAS RALPH MILLICAN, age 76 of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2020, at Pruitt Health Care, Rome. Mr. Millican was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on December 23, 1943 to the late J. B. Millican and Louise Dowdy Millican. He was retired from Mount Vernon Mills and was a member of West Summerville Baptist Church. In addition to His parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, the late Alice Cochran Millican.

Surviving are his son, Scott Millican; sister, Sandra (Jerry) Sparks and Niece, Lisa (Chris) Davis.

Private graveside and interment service for Mr. Millican will be held Saturday, December 19th from West Hill Cemetery with Rev. John Paul Harris officiating; Pallbearers will be Spence Davis, Steiner Davis, Chad Millican, Jerry Sparks, and Scott Millican.

Mr. Roy Elliott "Pete" Huggins

MR. ROY ELLIOTT “PETE” HUGGINS, age 34, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday evening, December 8, 2020, in a Rome hospital from injuries received in an auto accident, earlier Tuesday. Born in Floyd County, Georgia on December 8, 1986, a son of the late Elliott Jude Huggins and Debra Marlene Durham Smith, who survives. Mr. Huggins was employed by Chattanooga Wilbert Vault Company.

Surviving are companions, Janet Murdock and Kayla Cooper; children, Kathy Kirby, Savannah Cooper, Lynn Cooper, Kylie Huggins, Junior Huggins, Kassidy Cooper, and Nevaeh Cooper; Two Grandchildren; half sister, Beth Hamby; brother, Billy Ray (Ashley) Collins; Nieces and Nephews, Tammy Hamby, Stephanie Hamby, Anthony Hamby, Stephen Hamby, Bryson Goforth, Noah Goforth, Jackson Goforth.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 13th, at 3:00 P.M. from Graveside in Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Ray Caldwell and Rev. Bill Towe officiating. Mrs. Molly Alverson.....

At 1:00 p.m., December 6, 2020 Mrs. Molly Willingham Alverson yielded her earthly body and struggles and received her new and glorified body in Heaven. She was greeted there by her Mother, Shirley Stricklin Willingham and Father John Edd Willingham; Grandparents, Sam and Frances Stricklin and John B. and Stella Willingham along with countless other beloved family members.

She is survived by her family whom she loved immeasurably: her Husband of 30 years, Michael Alverson, whom she married December 29, 1990; her Children, April (Leroy) LuAllen, Melisha (Jimmy) Porter; Grandchildren, Landyn Durham, Brooklyn Durham, Bryanna Wallin, Kristopher Wallin, and Great Granddaughter, Athena Shropshire; Brother, Eddy Willingham along with Nephews and Nieces, Adam (Jessi) Willingham, Jesse (Abbigail) Willingham, Sarah (Garrett) Hurley, Joshua Willingham; Great Niece and Nephews, Reed Willingham, Avery Willingham, and Rett Hurley.

Mrs. Alverson was born in Rome (Floyd County) Georgia on March 15, 1963 and made Chattooga County her home her entire life. She retired from Hayes Correctional Facility in 2019 after 29 years. Her co-workers there in accounting were a second family and always held a special place in her heart. She was a member of Perennial Springs Baptist Church. She also leaves behind 3 life long friends, Cheryl (Kendrick) Mobbs, Kathy (Hawkins) Simms, and Kathy (Barfield) Marquez.

A Private Graveside Service will be shared with her mother at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Greenhill Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are Landyn Durham, Kristopher Wallin, Adam Willingham, Jesse Willingham, Joshua Willingham, and Garrett Hurley. Officiating the service will be Brother Tom Russell, Perennial Springs Baptist Church. Ms. Shirley Stricklin Willingham


At 12:05, December 2, 2020, MS. SHIRLEY STRICKLIN WILLINGHAM journeyed across the River Jordan to her Heavenly Home, where she joined her parents, Sam and Francis Stricklin, brothers and sister, Grant Stricklin, Molly Ragan, Sammy Stricklin, Jimmy Stricklin, Sr., and infant William D. Stricklin; the father of her children, John Ed Willingham, daughter-in-law, Patti Thompson Willingham, and long time companion, Ray Hall.

She is survived by one brother, James (Rachel) Stricklin; sisters-in-law, Peggy Stricklin and Janice Stricklin; one son, Eddy Willingham, and one daughter, Molly (Mike) Alverson; grandchildren, Adam (Jessi) Willingham, Jesse (Abbigail) Willingham, Sarah (Garrett) Hurley, Joshua Willingham, April (Leroy) Luallen, Melisha (Jimmy) Porter; great grandchildren, Landyn Durham, Brooklyn Durham, Bryanna Wallin, Kristopher Wallin, Reed Willingham, Avery Willingham, and Rett Hurley; great great granddaughter, Athena Shropshire; and a host of Nieces and Nephews, that she adored.

Ms. Willingham was born in Savannah (Hardin County), Tennessee on September 30, 1936, before her family moved to Chattooga County in the early 1940’s. Ms. Willingham retired as City Clerk in 1999, after serving the City of Summerville for 44 years. Her co-workers there were a second family, and always held a special place in her heart. She was a member of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, but had attended Dry Valley Baptist Church her last few years with her family, where she was a member of the Grace Sunday School Class. Ms. Willingham faithfully served our Veterans as a member of the Chattooga County Ladies Auxiliary VFW for many years. She was awarded Gold Circle membership in 2015.

A Private Graveside service will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Greenhills Memory Garden. Pallbearers are Adam Willingham, Jesse Willingham, Joshua Willingham, Garrett Hurley, Landyn Durham, Kristopher Wallin. Officiating the service will be Brother Tom Russell, Perennial Springs Baptist Church. MRS. DEBORAH MATON BRYANT, age 56, of Glenn Drive, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Friday, November 27, 2020, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Rome, Georgia on January 5, 1964, a daughter of the late Paul Leonard Maton and Annie Sue Touchstone Maton Matthews, who survives. Mrs. Bryant was Baptist by Faith.

Surviving are Her husband, William Bryant; mother, Annie Sue Matthews; daughters, Crystal Maton and Deborah Austin; son, Bud Bryant; sisters, Marie Long, Darlene Jordan, and Diane Smith; Eight Grandchildren, One Great Grandchild; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mr. Alton Luther Shaw, Sr.

MR. ALTON LUTHER SHAW, Sr., age 68, of Trion, Georgia, Mountain View Community, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2020, at his residence. Born in Cedartown, Georgia on April 11, 1952, He was a son of the late Melvin and Anner Redden Shaw. Mr. Shaw was a retired heavy equipment operator.

Surviving are His wife, Gail Shaw; daughters, Anna Gary, Aquilla White, April Shaw, Lisa Shaw, and Lynn Hill; son, Alton Shaw, Jr.; sister, Betty Ryan; Eleven Grandchildren, Three Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. RHONDA PETTYJOHN STERNER, age 57, of Greeson Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away early Saturday morning, November 21, 2020, at her residence. Born in Rome, Georgia on March 7, 1963; She was a daughter of the late Thomas S. and Louise Greene Pettyjohn. Mrs. Sterner was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was employed with Southeast Pathology, in Rome.

Surviving are Her husband, John Sterner; daughter, Alanna J. Sterner; and son, Mason D. Sterner; aunt, Linda Greene; special cousins, Cecila and Craig Holt and Susan Brooks; special friends, Ken and Carol Fries and Ann McCollum.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 22nd, at 3:00 P.M. from Antioch Baptist Church with Pastors Brian Butler, Jimmy Bryant, and Miles Phillips officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. Mr. Charles Miller Marks

     MR. CHARLES MILLER MARKS, age 97, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020, at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia. Born on February 3, 1923 in Summerville, Georgia to the late Harry and Maude Nichols Marks. Mr. Marks was married to the late Mary Lois Roper Marks on December 25, 1941, and was preceded in death by sisters, the late Julia A. Wyatt, Anis H. Harris, Ruth Schongerth, Mary E. Majors; brothers, the late James H. Marks, Stuart T. Marks, and Thomas Marks. He was a Veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Air Force and was retired from Chattooga County Schools where He was the Vocational Teacher. Mr. Marks was a member of the Summerville Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are daughter, Phyllis M. Brown; son, Charles R. (Chuck) Marks; grandchildren, Douglas (Maxx) Brown, Kristopher (Katie) Marks, Erin (Tyler) Pledger, and Charlie Marks; eleven Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

Thurman Harm Day

Thurman Harm Day 95, formerly of Trion, GA passed away November 13, 2020 at NHC Ft. Oglethorpe.

Mr. Day was born on April 15, 1925 in Chattooga County to the late Annie Mae Nunn Day, and George J Day Sr. He was as member of the Pleasant Grove church of Christ where he served as the song leader for many years.

After graduating from Trion High School, Mr. Day enlisted in the US Navy in July 1943 and served his country during WWII. Prior to his retirement, he was a manager in the cloth room at Riegel Textiles.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Mary Nell Hendrix Day and one sister Charlotte (Jimmy) Hall along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his precious daughter Glenda Jane Day.

He was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters Myrtle Day Young, Magalene Day Higgins, Leroy Day, Christine Day Googe and George Day.

A private family graveside service will be held at West Hill Cemetery in Trion, GA with Minister Hugh Glaze officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Pleasant Grove church of Christ.

Mrs. Montez Wilson Gladney

MRS. MONTEZ WILSON GLADNEY, a resident of 3451 Hwy. 48, Summerville, Georgia, passed away early Tuesday morning, November 10, 2020, at her home. She was born February 4, 1933 to the late James Aubrey Wilson, Sr. and Lena Gibson Wilson. Montez was preceded in death by her husband-Charles Lamar Gladney in 2003, as well as eight siblings, Claudine Fowler, Ewart Wilson, Sr., Maughee Wilson Evans, Charles B. Wilson, Lorenzo Wilson, James A. Wilson, Jr., Waylon Wilson, and Juanita Wilson. Montez was a faithful member of the South Commerce Church of Christ for almost 70 years and was retired, after 42 years of service from Fieldcrest Cannon. She took great delight in her family and also loved to sing.

Montez is survived by daughter Kaye Greer and her husband, Preston; two beloved grandchildren, William Benjamin Greer and Kailen Laura Greer; one sister, whom she loved dearly, Joan Wilson Renslow; she is also survived by a host of Nieces, Nephews, great Nieces, and great Nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 12th, at 2:00 P.M. from Graveside in Greenhills Memory Garden with Ministers Bill Thomas and Tim Evans officiating. Captain Eddie Lee Stroup

CAPTAIN EDDIE LEE STROUP, age 65, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away early Saturday morning, October 31, 2020. Mr. Stroup was born in Fulton County, Georgia of November 24, 1954, to the late Charlie and Myrtice Carnes Stroup. He was raised in Cedartown, Georgia, and was a 1972 graduate of Cedartown High School. Following graduation, Mr. Stroup served in the U. S. Air Force, the U. S. Air Force Reserve, and the Army National Guard. He began his law enforcement career in 1992 with the Rockmart, Georgia Police Department rising to the rank of Lieutenant. He was later employed with the Polk County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy, becoming the first K-9 Unit in Polk County, Georgia. In 2001 Mr. Stroup joined Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department holding positions of Deputy, Road Captain, Investigator, Chief Investigator, and as of late, Jail Administrator. Mr. Stroup loved Knowing that throughout his career, he was able to help those in need. Mr. Stroup was married to Rhonda Lynn Tucker Robinson, on April 1, 2006, in a beautiful ceremony in the mountains of Tennessee, surrounded by their loving children. In addition to His Parents, he in preceded in death by a brother the late Gary Wayne Stroup.

Surviving is His loving wife, Rhonda Lynn Stroup; son, Charlie Joe Stroup (Aubrey); steps sons, John Nicholas Robinson (Sierra) and Ethan Tyler Robinson (Chelsey); grandchildren, Rory Stroup, Maura Stroup, Aiden Robinson, and Lincoln Robinson.

A Private Funeral service will be held Wednesday at the Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Sheriff Mark Schrader, Chief Deputy Kevin Woods, and Pastor Joel Smith officiating, entombment in Greenhills Memory Garden. MRS. INEZ “KNOCKIE” BLACKMON, age 84, of Martin Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday afternoon at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia, She was born to the late Charlie and Madie Ledford Bates, on May 4, 1936. Mrs. Blackmon was a member of the Community Holiness Church and was retired from the former Montgomery Knitting Mill. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Mack Blackmon, daughter, the late Betty Blackmon Stansell, grandson, the late Ben Hix, and Six Siblings, also died earlier.

Mrs. Kathleen Phillips Wooten

MRS. KATHLEEN PHILLIPS WOOTEN, age 80, of Blowing Springs Road, Menlo, Georgia passed away Friday, October 23, 2020, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Trion, Georgia on March 6, 1940, to the late Charlie Edwards and Etheleen Rich Phillips. Mrs. Wooten was a member of West Berryton Faith Temple and formerly worked in the card room of Mount Vernon Mills and also was a cashier for Walmart. She was preceded in death by daughters, the late Janet Wooten and Jeanette Wooten, grandsons, the late Joshua Wooten and Jeremy Wooten, and son-in-law, the late David Wilson.

Surviving are husband, Hoyt Miles Wooten; daughters and spouse, Doris Wilson of Menlo, Brenda and Greg Woodall of Fyffe, AL.; sons, Kenneth Wooten of Menlo and Donnie Wooten of Daytona, FL.; brother, Jimmie (Dorthene) Phillips; Seven Grandchildren; great grandchildren, whom She raised, Dixie Shelton, Journie Shelton, and Kenzie Edwards; twelve Great Grandchildren; one Great Great Granddaughter; Nieces and Nephews.

Mrs. Ann H. Brooks, age 83 of Summerville Georgia, passed away Wednesday, October 21, 2020 in a Rome Hospital. She was born in Summerville on March 21, 1937, a daughter of the late Ralph Henry and Betty Elizabeth Tribble Housch. Mrs. Brooks was a member of the Trion Presbyterian Church and worked for Profitts Department Store for a number of years and later retired from Belks. Ann was preceded in death by aunts Edna Tribble Shaw and Lucille Tribble Ratliff and a brother in law, Bill Worsham.

Surviving are her daughter, Beverly Brooks; son, Tim (Lee Ann) Brooks; grandson, Skyler Brooks; sisters, Kay Worsham and Jane (Jim) Parker; brother, Dale (Honey) Housch; an aunt, Frances Housch; also, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Wanda Jo Prather

MRS. WANDA JO PRATHER, age 72, of Filter Plant Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020, in a Rome hospital. A native of Chattooga County, she was born to the late John and Sara Martin Blackwell on January 17, 1948. Mrs. Prather was a member of the Summerville First United Methodist Church and was retired lab technician for Mohawk. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband the late Robert Gideon Prather; siblings, Ralph Blackwell, Bill Blackwell, Ronald Blackwell, and Tommy Blackwell.

Surviving are in daughter and son-in-law, Elena and Matt Floyd; grandchildren, Anna and Doug Craig, Jamey and Will Floyd; sister Sara Anna and Mike Stoker; brothers, Bob and Diane Blackwell, Don and Nancy Blackwell, Danny Ray and Cristy Blackwell, Gary and Teresa Blackwell; several Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. HILDA ROSSER REYNOLDS, age 87, of Lyerly Dam Road, Lyerly, Georgia, passed away Tuesday morning, October 20, 2020, at her residence. A native of Little Sand Mountain, she was born to the late George Lee and Bessie Ada White Rosser on August 4, 1933. Mrs. Reynolds was a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church and was retired from the sewing department of Buster Brown Mfg. Company. In addition to parents She is preceded by siblings, Helen Satterfield, Annie Bell Bishop, Ballenger Rosser, Rose Murdock, Milton Rosser, Ada Bridges Morgan, John Rosser, Josephine Baggett Frank Rosser, Paul Rosser, and Frances Rosser.

Surviving are husband, Bob Reynolds, She was married to Bob for 69 years; daughters, Nancy (David) Daniel and Donna (Thomas) Wright; son, David (Teresa) Reynolds; sister-in-law, Dot Rosser; grandchildren, Jason Wright, Amy Lamb, Kevin Daniel, Matthew Daniel, and Andrew Daniel; great grandchildren, Everett James Daniel and Lydia Ruth Daniel; forty eight Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Family was important to her. If you ever wondered if she cared for you, just remember, if you were in her extended family—she did. She spent hours keeping up with her family and family tree. At any family reunion she spent time finding out the names and birthdates of any new family members. She knew who everyone was and how they were related. She was one of those people who if you asked her, could probably name everyone in the room. If she didn’t know your name, she was trying to find out.

LINDA ARLENE POSEY, age 72, of Fulmer Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday morning, October 18, 2020, in a Rome hospital. She was born in LaFayette, Georgia on February 7, 1948, a daughter of the late Earl Jerome and Mary Elizabeth Eleam Smith. She was a member and pianist of the New Hope North Baptist Church, a 1966 Graduate of Chattooga High School and graduated from Medical Assistance Program of Alberquerque, New Mexico Tech. School, in 1983. For several years worked for Walmart. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by grandparents, Donald Oscar and Janey Marie Ledford Smith and Charlie Lester and Ida Lenora Tribble Eleam.

Surviving are daughter and spouse, Mary Ann Posey (Jeff) Maddux; son and spouse, Jeffery Michael (Joann) Posey; grandchildren, Kassandra Posey, Jaylyn Gann Posey, McKenzie Hudgins, Tari Maddux, Tatum Maddux, Braden Maddux, Samantha Witten, Courtney Brown, Gavin Gann; great granddaughter, Gracelynn Posey; brother, Terry Don Smith; niece, Amy Shy Smith; great nephew, Brendon Michael Smith; a number of Cousins; former husband and father of children, Michael Lewis Posey.

MR. DANNY ROSS TIMMONS, age 76, of Union Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Friday afternoon, October 16, 2020, in a Rome hospital. Born in Dekalb County, Alabama, on September 22, 1944, He was a son of the late R. B. and Rachel Watkins Timmons. Mr. Timmons was retired from auto body repair and was preceded in death by a daughter, the late Sara Dale Timmons, a granddaughter, the late Misty Bryson, and siblings, Becky Bethune, Linda Bethune, Tommy Timmons, Carlton Timmons, and Faye Timmons, all died earlier.

Mr. Scottie Clark "Smoooth" Lewis

MR. SCOTTIE CLARK “SMOOOTH” LEWIS, age 65, passed away Sunday, October 11, 2020, at his residence. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, He was born to the late Johnnie Q. Lewis and Dorotha Molee Clark Hawkins on May 18, 1955. Scottie was self employed, a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by his son, the late Chris Lewis.

Surviving are brother, Terry Q. Lewis; sisters, Robbie Leah Skinner and Loretta Lewis Teems.

Minister Thomas S. "Tommy" Broome

MINISTER THOMAS S. “TOMMY” BROOME, age 91, of Neal Gap Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday afternoon in a Rome hospital. He was born in Chickmauga, Georgia on January 17, 1929, to the late William M. and Ola Tinney Broome. Minister Broome was a retired Church of Christ Minister, having pastored numerous congregations in this area, was presently a member of the Pennville Church Christ. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the late Duene Broome in 2012 and a son the late Spencer Broome in 2020.

Surviving are wife, Margie Conner Broome; children, Terry (Kathy) Broome, Yvonne Broome (Barry) Allen, Marty (Beverly) Broome, Renee Broome, Hillary (Deborah) Broome; Ten Grandchildren. Twenty Great Grandchildren, and One Great Great Granddaughter; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held Monday, October 12th, at 2:00 P.M. from Graveside in Greenhills Memory Garden with Minister Charles Williams and Minister Robby Eversole officiating; Pallbearers will be Grandsons. MR. ZACHARY “ZACH” HOBSON BROWN, passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020. He was employed in the paint department of Roper Corporation and was a former oil rigger. Zach was an avid Hunter and was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Connie Jewell Brown and Elgin D. Brown, maternal grandparents, Ada Lavon Hartline Gentry and Charles Jackson McCullough and uncles, Thomas R. Ochs and Tom Brown.

KATHY RAY VANPELT BROWN, age 73, of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, formerly of Chattooga County, Georgia, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2020, in a Knoxville, Tennessee hospital. She was a daughter of the late Marcus Ray Vanpelt and Catherine Jessie Reed Vanpelt Miller, and was preceded in death by her husband, the late Stanley Brown. Ms. Brown was the former Chattooga County Tax Commissioner and was working in the tourism industry in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Surviving are son, Greg Brown of Sheridan, Wy.

STEVE OSCAR “ROUNDMAN” DYER, born December 5, 1943, died at his residence on Sunday, September 27, 2020. Steve was a retired police officer with 39 years of service. He worked for the Trion Police Department, Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department, Walker County Sheriff’s Department, Summerville Police Department, and LaFayette Police Department; as well as 20 years with Chattooga County EMS. Steve was an Emeritus member of Grand Lodge of Georgia, Trion Masonic Lodge #160, F & AM, Royal Arch Mason #026, the Chattooga County Shrine Club, and Yarabb Shrine Temple. He attended the Summerville Pentecostal Worship Center. Steve enjoyed electronics, guns, and loved his grandchildren. Steve was preceded in death by parents, Louis and Addie Mae Barksdale Dyer, brother, Jerry Dyer, and sister, Jennine Smith.

Surviving is His wife of 58 years, Rebecca Bowling Dyer; 2 sons, Steve L. Dyer of Summerville and Gregory A. Dyer of Decatur; 2 daughters, Nichole (Cole) Fannin of Carrollton and Darlene (Tommy) McRae of Summerville; grandchildren, Dara and Deana McRae, Adalyn, Dalton, and Dixon Fannin, and Britt Carpenter; sisters, Lisa (Jackie) Chandler and Marvaline Cook; sisters-in-law, Shirley (Odis) Grogan, Brenda Martineau, Dorothy (Andy) Hutchins, Marlene Watwood, and brother-in-law, Dwight (Wanda) Bowling. Mr. Ben F. Johnson, Jr.

MR. BEN F. JOHNSON, JR., of Summerville, Georgia went to be with the Lord, on Sunday evening, September 20, 2020 at Redmond Regional Medical Center from complications related to COVID 19. Mr. Johnson was born on October 25, 1946 at the Summerville Hospital. Ben and Linda would have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on November 20, 2020. Mr. Johnson is predeceased by his parents, the late Ben, Sr. and Elizabeth Poovey Johnson, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Louise and John M. Durham, and two brothers-in-law, David Young and Larry Durham. Ben served four years in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War; after being discharged, he returned to Chattooga County and married the girl of his dreams. Ben was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Tabernacle. He spent many hours using his talents, singing tenor and playing the piano in various churches, also numerous Stamps Baxter singings in the South.

Ben is survived by his wife, Linda Durham Johnson; sister, Mary Jeanette Young, and sister-in-law, Martha Bishop, niece, Trina Hunt, and nephews, David Durham and Kenny Durham also survive.

Due to COVID restrictions, currently in place, there will be no visitation or viewing for Mr. Johnson.

Mrs. Mary Frances (Tommie) Hicks

MRS. MARY FRANCES (TOMMIE) HICKS, age 87, of Little Sand Mt. Road, Armuchee, Georgia, passed away Friday night, September 18, 2020, in a Rome hospital. Mrs. Hicks was born on June 4, 1933, in Walker County, Georgia to the late Ab and Lola Strickland Stoker; She was predeceased by her husband, the late James Rowan (Ryan) Hicks, a sister, Virginia Gleffe, and grandson, Scott Smith. She dearly loved all her children and grandchildren; enjoyed going to dog shows, showing her award-winning dogs, also loved going to the fox pen with Ryan, her husband, and enjoyed listening to the dogs make their music. Mrs. Hicks also shared the love of all Armuchee sports with Ryan. She enjoyed watching Darlene work with her horses, on her farm, and taking rides with them in their jeep. She had always worked hard for most of her life, and will be missed dearly, but her Family has peace knowing she is being welcomed by Ryan and her most beloved grandson, Scott.

Surviving are daughter, Darlene (Steve) Crowe; sons, Mike (Gayle) Hicks and Mark (Chrystal) Hicks; grandchildren, Jesse Hicks, Matt Hicks, Marisa Grogan; great-grandchildren, Ally Smith Alred, Bowie Hicks, Shannen Hernandez, and Fisher Grogan; several Nieces and Nephews.

Mrs. Lee Owens

MRS. LEE OWENS, 92, of Summerville, Georgia went to be with the Lord on September 15, 2020. She was born November 18, 1927, daughter to the late Henry Thomas Hendrix and Addie Mae Scoggins Hendrix. Prior to retirement, She was employed with the Chattooga County Board of Education. Mrs. Owens was a member of Bethel Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, rocking on the front porch, watching the birds, and working in her beautiful flowers. She cherished spending as much time as possible with her children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. In addition to Her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Furman M. Owens, brothers, Willard Hendrix, Bobby Hendrix, and Wilson Hendrix, as well as sisters Dot Elsberry, Henrietta Owenby, and Edna Hendrix.

Surviving are Her children, Mike (Michelle) Owens, Mitzi (Ken) Smith, Terry (Leslie) Owens, and Marina (Kevin) Lee. Also surviving is sister, Evelyn Jones, Six Grandchildren, and Five Great Grandchildren.

A private graveside service and interment will be held at Little Sand Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, where She will rest forevermore. The Family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Oak View Health and Rehabilitation G Hall, for taking such good care of Her when the Family couldn’t. We appreciate their hard work and dedication shown to our Family during this time of confusion in her mind, from Alzheimers.

Mr. Robert Herman Hatfield, age 55, of Blake Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2020, in a Rome Hospital. He was born on March 1, 1965 in Atlanta Georgia, son to the late Johnny Sims and Brenda Blackmon Sims who survives. Mr. Hatfield was a member of the Ridgedale Church of God and worked with Spriggs Construction of Rome, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his father.

Surviving are his wife, Jane Hatfield; daughter, Megan Hatfield; step daughter, Shantal Hatt; step son, Lavon Sims; mother Brenda Sims; step grandchildren, Carma Hatt, and Shawn Hatt; sister, Candy Dawson; and brother Timothy Hatfield. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held Friday, September 11th, at 11:00 am from the Graveside in Sims Cemetery, with Pastor Matthew Evans officiating. MRS. GLENDA GAIL TUCKER, age 66, of Raines Circle, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2020, in the local nursing home. A native of Menlo, Georgia, She was a daughter of the late William O. “Bill” and Mary Lucille Cameron Nixon. Mrs. Tucker, along with her late husband, James Larry Tucker owned and operated Larry’s Bar B Que, formerly in the Pennville Community. She was a member of the Harvest Worship Center. Beside Her Husband and Parents, was preceded in death by sister, the late Joyce Diane Johnson.

Surviving are sons and daughter-in-law, Brian and Julia Tucker and Blake Tucker; grandchildren, Braden Tucker, Breanna Tucker, and Gracie Tucker; sister, Marlene Devier; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mr. Johnny Campbell

MR. JOHNNY CAMPBELL, age 90, of 7th Street-Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday, September 3, 2020, in the local nursing home. He was born in Etowah, Tennessee on August 22, 1930, a son of the late Andrew and Dora Stepp Campbell. He was Baptist by Faith, a U. S. Army Veteran of Korea, and retired from the Weave Department of Riegel Textile. Mr. Campbell was an avid fisherman and gardener and so enjoyed cooking for Family and Friends. The last of fourteen children, He was preceded by siblings, Bonnie Robertson, Bertie Bennie, Evelyn Wilson, Louise Stoker, Edith Ingram, Pearl Barfield, Mary Blackmon, Dorothy Campbell, Frank, Roy, Jess, and Roger Campbell.

Surviving are many Nieces and Nephews.

Memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 9th, at 1:00 P.M. in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers the Staff of Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center.

Mr. Jerrell W. McCool

Jerrell Wynn McCool was born July 18, 1941, in Rome, Georgia. Passed into the loving arms of The Lord on Sept. 2, 2020, in Summerville. Survived by his loving wife, Jane McCollum McCool, whom he first met when she was 11 years old. Also survived by sons, Ben, Jason (Brandy), Joel (Alma). Eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, his brother, Jim (Carolyn). Preceded in death by parents, Henry Sanders McCool, Eva May Freeman McCool, brother, Henry Lee McCool, and grandson, Memphis Blu McCool. 

Jerrell grew up in West Rome and after graduating from West Rome High School he went to work at Fox Manufacturing. JB Dodd was looking for an eagle scout to work in banking.

Harry Wheeler, Boy Scout representative of Floyd County, recommended Jerrell for a job at Rome Bank and Trust. He began this career in the Proof Department of Rome Bank and Trust Company. Within a few years he had trained in all departments, and then began to teach training classes throughout the region. In his banking years, Jerrell attended Georgia Banking School and LSU Banking School of the South. After 19 years at Rome Bank, his career led him to First National Bank-Chattooga County as President when he was 36 years old, as one of the youngest bank presidents in the state of Georgia. He worked there nearly 8 years. His career led him to First National of Polk County, United Bank and Trust, Bank of Adairsville, returning in 1997 to First National Bank-Chattooga County, and Citizens First Bank where he retired in 2006. In 2009 he became a licensed insurance agent for Alfa Insurance, Joel McCool Agency in Rome, GA and continued until 2018 as an agent of Farmers Insurance, Joel McCool Agency in Cartersville, GA. Jerrell loved banking so much he returned to Southeast First National Bank-Chattooga County after retirement where he worked a couple days a week until the day he passed away. Jerrell was successful, had many friends, and well liked in the banking community.

Jerrell’s scouting began at the age of 8. He would have celebrated 70 years of scouting in December of this year. Jerrell earned his Arrow of Light as a Cub Scout, his Eagle at the age of 15, he earned the God and Country Award, Ordeal Brotherhood in 1956, and eventually the Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow, Waguli Lodge 318, of which he was also Lodge Chief as a youth. He was a Silver Beaver Award Recipient in 1988. He was the assistant scout master, troop 28, 1959-1968. He earned the Scouters Training Award in 1967. Wood Badge Training in 1970. He was the Scout Master troop 28, 1974-1978, and the Scout Master troop 40, 1988-1995.

Jerrell’s wish was that his children would have his love of scouting. His dream was achieved when all three of his sons earned their Eagle.

Jerrell loved his God, as the youngest charter member of West Rome Methodist Church. He was the lay speaker for years when he lived in Rome. He was a current member of Summerville United Methodist Church where he was an active member and taught the Triangle Sunday School Class.

His mischievous, fun sense of humor, he kept his family, friends, and coworkers on their toes, with a smile on their face. Jerrell will be so missed…

Jerrell was laid to rest Saturday, Sept. 5th at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens, Rome, Georgia. Pallbearers Joel McCool, Jason McCool, David McCool, Nathan Helton, Bill Vandiver, and Matt Hart.

DWIGHT STEPHEN (STEVE) MOORE, age 65, of Maplewood Drive, Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2020, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Rome, Georgia on October 27, 1954, a son of the late Dave Albert and Thelma Lorene Young Moore. Mr. Moore was a retired Manager for Shaw Industries in Dalton, Georgia.  He also worked for J and J Flooring Group.  In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by a brother, the late David Moore.

Surviving are his children, April (Rob) Curott, Mike (Kattie) Moore, James Anthony Moore, Kayleigh (Matt) Wynn, Derek Bridges (Ashley Swindle); grandchildren, Grayson Curott, Collier Curott, Jameson Moore, Madison Bridges, Cole Bridges, Reese Wynn; amazing aunts, Frances Cordle, Nancy Wilson, and Linda Pledger also survive.

NANCY ANN DRAKE, AGE 58, of Northwest Congress Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2020, at her residence. Born in Centre, Alabama on February 16, 1962, She was a daughter of the late Jack Alonzo and Bertha Lee Calloway Rutledge.

Surviving are sons, Corey Drake of North Dakota and Robert Drake of Alabama; sister, Loretta Drake of Summerville; brother, Harold Rutledge of Alabama; Five Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Honorable Judge Jon M. Payne

HONORABLE JUDGE JON M. PAYNE, age 71, of Martin Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, August 18, 2020, in a Rome, Georgia hospital. Born in Memphis, Tennessee on August 22, 1948, He was a son of the late Dr. Willard Marlin Payne and Montyne Brock Payne who survives. Judge Payne was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Chattooga High School, a Veteran of the U. S. Marines, for several years was a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy, and was elected Chattooga County Probate Judge in 1975 at the age 25 and was the only Probate Judge Chattooga County has known. He was a member of the Church of Christ and member of Alpine Lodge #211, F & AM.

Surviving are His daughter, Marlie Payne; sons and spouse, Patrick Payne and girl friend, Michelle Glass and Chase and Brandee Payne; mother, Montyne Brock Payne; sister and brother-in-law, Marla and Darrell Wise; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Sue Payne; grandchildren, Laney Payne, Harper Payne, and Logan Payne; special friend, Teresa Scott; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. RAYMOND L. (BUDDY) BARNES, age 73, of Jamestown Road, Menlo, Georgia, passed away Thursday afternoon, August 13, 2020, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on May 3, 1947, a son of the late Raymond Wood Barnes and Otha Mae Boyd Barnes. Mr. Barnes was a member and Deacon of Chesterfield Baptist Church, and a Veteran of the U. S. Army serving in Germany during the Vietnam conflict. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by father-in-law and mother-in-law the late Roy Cavin and Frances Cavin.

Surviving are His wife, Katie Cavin Barnes; son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Chris Barnes; grandson, Jaden Barnes; daughter, Becky Barnes, step grandchildren, Brian Wimbley and Alex Wimbley; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and June Barnes; several Brothers-in Law and Sisters-in-Law, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. SANDRA FAYE HOWARD, age 78, of Plainville, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, passed away Tuesday evening, August 4, 2020, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 30, 1942, a daughter of the late William Cody and Fata Lorine Ellenburg Padgett. She was Church of God by Faith and for many years was bakery/deli manager for Publix. In addition to Parents She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Bobby F. Howard, and children, the late Bruce, Mandy, and Brad Carroll, sister, Lynda McAuthur, and special cousin, Clarice Sprayberry Prince.

Surviving are Her son, David (Regina) Carroll of Plainville; grandchildren, Nicole Carroll (Jason Pye), Brandon Carroll, Breanna (Joey) Saxon all of Millen, GA., Jason (Sara) Carroll of Commerce, Brent (Nicole) Carroll of Ball Ground, and Bently Carroll of Matthews; Nine Great Grandchildren; brother-in-law, Bennie McArthur of Marietta; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. GUINN HANKINS, age 71, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, formerly of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 2, 2020, at his residence. Born in LaFayette, Georgia, He was a son of the late J. T. and Eleanor Thomas Hankins. Mr. Hankins was a self-employed Contractor, owned and operated H. & H. Construction Company and H. & H. Rentals. He was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, a former City of Summerville Councilman, and former President of the Chattooga Athletic Boosters Club. Mr. Hawkins was predeceased by his wife of 46 years Barbara Maples Hankins and brother, Tommy Hankins.

Surviving are daughter and spouse, Patti and Charlie Jarrett; son and spouse, Adam and Melissa Hankins; grandchildren, Jered Nelson, Karlie & Dillon Worley, Bailey Hankins, Jake Jarrett, Noah Hankins, Emme Hankins, Angelena Fiorito, Madi Martin,; great grandson-Hudson Bruce Worley.

Mr. Donald Minor Chandler

MR. DONALD MINOR CHANDLER, age 92, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2020, at his residence. Born in Trion, Georgia on November 4, 1927, a son of the late John Herbert and Mattie Lee Alexander Chandler. Mr. Chandler was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church and the Seekers Sunday Class of the Church. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Navy serving in WW II and was retired from the Dyeing Department of Mount Vernon Mills. He was preceded by his wives, the late Doris Posey Chandler in 1977 and the late Winnie Lee Ledford Chandler in 2016, and siblings the late Leland Chandler, Beth Chandler Hall, and Bruce Chandler.

Surviving are children, Laura (Sally) & Jeff Gamble of Armuchee, Susan & Randy Thompson of Canton, and Gary & Kathy Floyd of Cartersville; grandchildren, Melissa Thompson-Riddle, Meredith Thompson Carter, Jarrod Slaton Floyd, Jamie Kristen Woodward Brown, Anna Elaine Floyd; Ten Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

Charles Arvel McLeod, Sr.

Charles Arvel McLeod, Sr., of Trion, Georgia, passed away July 22, 2020, at Oakview in Summerville. Born July 24, 1934, he was the first baby born at Riegel Hospital soon after it opened in Trion and was the son of the late Grady Arvel McLeod and Shirley Henderson McLeod. He was married for 66 years to his high school sweetheart Margaret Dillard McLeod.

A retired educator, Mr. McLeod taught in Chattooga, Columbia, and Floyd counties in Georgia. From 1975 until 1982, he was the principal at Lyerly Elementary School. He was an enthusiastic golfer, who started out caddying at the Trion Golf Club in the 1940s. Throughout his life he spent many happy hours at the course in Trion with his golfing buddies, many of whom had gone to school together. One of the thrills of his life was being able to attend the Masters Tournament in Augusta almost every year from the 1960s through 2019 often with his brother-in-law Billy Hayes and to watch generations of professional golfers over half a century. Mr. McLeod and his wife were members of the Trion United Methodist Church and also worked together with the Trion Alumni Association for several years.

In addition to his wife Margaret, Mr. McLeod is survived by his children Cynthia Anne McLeod (Don Highfield), Charles Arvel McLeod, Jr. (Lisa), and Keith Arlin McLeod. He was predeceased by their son John Andrew McLeod (Cheryl). Survivors include grandchildren Andrea McLeod, Lauren McLeod, Nicholas Van Pelt, and Kathleen Van Pelt Gibson and great-grandchildren Kaedance, Ameri, and Andrew Van Pelt, Kai McLeod, and Emmaline Gibson, as well as nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

A private celebration of Charles McLeod’s life was held at his daughter Cynthia’s home in Mentone, Alabama, on July 24, 2020, on what would have been his 86th birthday. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, friends donate to the scholarship fund of the Trion Bulldog Alumni Association at PO Box 295, Trion, GA 30753.

MRS. JEAN TILLIS, age 83, of Lyerly Georgia, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Lyerly, Georgia on May 19, 1937, a daughter the late William Alonzo and Willie Copeland Anderson. She was a member of the Lyerly First Baptist Church and worked in the insurance field. She was preceded in death by husband, the late Ed Tillis and sister, the late Ruth Cook.

Surviving are her step children, Edwin Tillis and Barbara Spearman of Atlanta, several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Graveside service will be held Sunday, July 26, 2020 at 1pm from the Johnson Cemetery with the Rev. James Baird and Rev. Trey Williams officiating. Mrs. Siffles was born, on July 16, 1947, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Robert Benjamin and Peggy Owens Siffles. She was Holliness by Faith, a homemaker, and was preceded in death by a grandson, Tony Dewayne Eller, sisters, Margaret Sifles, Lynn Jo Siffles, and brothers, Hollis Siffles, Ray Siffles, and Billy Siffles all died earlier.

MRS. BILLIE FAYE MILAM, age 77, of Saratoga Way, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2020, a her residence. A Chattooga County native, She was born on August 17, 1942 to the late L. D. (Doke) and Frances Armstrong Barksdale. Mrs. Milam was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church, was retired from the dipping department of Best Mfg. Company, and was preceded in death by her husband, the late Robert Milam, Sr. and son the late Chris Milam.

Surviving are son, Gene (Goose) Milam, Jr.; sisters, Sandra Ivey and Joyce Haygood; brother, Charles Barksdale; grandchildren, Jace Milam, Brady Milam, Jared Milam, and Caitlin Milam; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

A native of Lyerly, Georgia, She was born to the late Marvin Bishop and Nellie Margaret Brady Pickle on July 8, 1924. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Floyd- Springs Baptist Church, a Homemaker, and was preceded in death by her husband, the late John Wesley Smith, son, Gary R. Smith, granddaughter, Elizabeth Smith, sister, Lerlene Gilliland, and brother, Elmer Pickle all died earlier.

Surviving are daughter, Amy Smith Johnson; granddaughter, Paige Smith Pittard (Jason), great grandchildren, Joel, Jacob, and Sarah Pittard; daughter-in-law, Gwendolyn Carter Smith; brother, Malcolm (Ramona) Pickle; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. L. C. PRICE, age 84, of Pine Hill Drive, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2020, at his residence. He was born in Chattoogaville Community, Lyerly, Georgia on October 21, 1935, to the late Nish and Haney McClusky Price. Mr. Price was a member of the Palm Springs AME Zion Church, a Veteran of Korea serving in the U. S. Air Force, and was a retired construction contractor. In addition to Parents He was preceded in death by sons, the late Ralph Price and Brent Price and brothers, the late Elmer Price, Charles Price, and Joe Price.

A native of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, She was born July 30, 1932 to the late William (W. T.) and Ettie Jane Abercrombie Millican. Mrs. Adams was retired from Mohawk Industries, a member of West Summerville Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Odell Adams, and siblings, Willie Jane Millican, Katherine McCauley, J. Mr. Donnie Ray Roan-Kilgore

Mr. Donnie Ray Roan-Kilgore age 67, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at his residence. Donnie was born in Cullman, Alabama on February 16, 1953, a son of the late Grady Roan and Helen Kilgore Roan, he was also preceded in death by a sister, the late Carolyn Prater and brother, the late Ronnie Roan.

Surviving are his wife, Tamala Roan; daughters, April Naillon, and Twana Murdock; sons, Edwin Smith and Jason Smith; sisters, Geneva Edwards, Eva McGraw, and Louise Jenkins; brothers, Eddie Lee Roan, Alton Roan, Loyal Roan, Doyle Roan, and Zandell Roan; grandchildren, Dillon Murdock, Levi Fowler, Shiann Murdock, Katelyn Fowler, Courtney Naillon, Destinee Naillon, Billy Ray Collins, and Kyra Hampton; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

A Private Graveside service will be held Friday, May 22st, with Kenny Ashand Ray Caldwell officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Abernathy, Billy Ray Collins, Pete Huggins, Tim Evans, Tim Smith, Shawn Smith.

Mr. Kilgore will be at his residence #54 Montgomery Street, Summerville, after 6:00 P.M. Wednesday.

MRS. SONYA ASH PAYTON, age 56, of Lyerly, Georgia passed away Saturday morning, May 16, 2020, in a Rome hospital. Born in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, on December 29, 1963, She was a daughter of the late Barbara Bohannon Ash and Deward Ray Ash who survives. Mrs. Payton formerly was billing clerk for Mohawk Mill. She was preceded in death by her Mother and a brother the late Lynn Ash.

Surviving are daughter, Stephanie Durham (Chris); sons, Shaun Payton and Randall Payton; father, Deward Ray Ash; sisters, Belinda Rendon and Rhonda Battles; brother, Scott Ash; granddaughter, Hailey Durham; several Nieces, Nephews, and Special Friends also survive.

Mrs. Lucille Fowler

MRS. LUCILLE FOWLER, age 92, of Covington, Georgia formerly of Berryton, Georgia, passed away Monday morning, May 11, 2020, in Covington. She was born in Summerville, Georgia to the late Russell and Flossie Lorene Murphy Lee, on January 7, 1928. She was a member of Berryton Church of God and a homemaker. Mrs. Fowler was preceded in death by Her husband, the late Emmett Andrew Fowler, a daughter, Anita Lynn Fowler, and son, Gary Lee Fowler.

Surviving are daughters, Gail Wofford, Dianne Smith, and Angela Fowler; son, Jeffery Fowler; sister, Pauline Wood; Fifteen Grandchildren, several Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Private Graveside service will be held Thursday, in Summerville Cemetery. A Memorial service will be held at a later date. Grandsons will be Pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berryton Church of God.

Mrs. Willie Mae Hilburn

MRS. WILLIE MAE HILBURN, age 89, of Macon, Georgia, formerly of Mentone, Alabama, passed away Wednesday evening, May 6, 2020, in Macon. A native of Madison, Georgia, She was born on May 21, 1930, to the late Luther E. and Dorothy Kitchens Morrison. Mrs. Hilburn grew up in the Middle Georgia area and later settled and spent much of Her life in Rome and the Mentone area. Much of Her working life was involved in several restaurant businesses, several years at Hilburn Shoes in Rome, and later she and her late husband operated a rhododendron and azalea nursery in Mentone. She was a member and Past Elder of Cloudland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Hilburn was pre-deceased by husband, Gene Hilburn, brothers, Jack Morrison and Charles Morrison, and step-children Julia Hilburn Dent and Bill Hilburn.

Surviving are Her sisters, Dorothy Moore, Forsyth, Ga. And Anne Jones, Macon, Ga.; her brother, Johnny Morrison (Linda), Macon, Ga.; two grandchildren; and several Nieces and Nephews.

A Graveside Funeral service was held Saturday, May 9th, at 1:00 P.M. in Naomi Cemetery, Naomi Cemetery Road, LaFayette, Georgia, with Mr. David Tidmore officiating. Memorials can be made to Cloudland Presbyterian Church or the Alzhermer's Association.

Mr. Kern Eugene (Gene) Coppedge

MR. KERN EUGENE (GENE) COPPEDGE, age 95, of Scoggins Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020, in the local nursing home. A native of Franklin, Ohio, He was born to the late Kenneth Spring and Myrtle Ann Benge Coppedge, on April 3, 1925. Mr. Coppedge and wife Edith, lived in Alaska for many years, retiring to Summerville a few years ago; He was self-employed as a paper hanger.

Surviving are His wife, Edith A. Ragland Coppedge; several Children, Step-Children, Grandchildren, and Great Grandchildren also survive.

In keeping with Mr. Coppedge's wishes, his body was cremated, no formal service is planned at this time.

Mr. Shannon Wayne Hellard

MR. SHANNON WAYNE HELLARD, age 40, of Ridge Street, Trion, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Friday, May 1, 2020, from an accident. A native of Kentucky, He was a son of the late Timothy Hellard and Lucinda Sluder, who survives. Shannon was employed with Smith Iron Works in Lyerly, Georgia.

Surviving are His wife, Rachel Craft Hellard; children, Dasia (Blake) West, Ziibi Dickson, Jorma Dickson, Kannon Hellard, Dixie Rose Hellard, Justin Simmons, and Dustin Simmons; granddaughter, Brooklyn Rain West; mother, Lucinda Sluder; brother, James Hellard; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

In according with Shannon's wishes, he was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Bobby Fay Hawkins

MR. BOBBY FAY HAWKINS, age 88, of Orchard Hill Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2020, at his residence, following an extended illness. Born in Summerville on June 12, 1931, he was a son of the late Roy and Elizabeth Owens Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins was Baptist by faith and a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Georgia Rug Mill and Earle Rainwater Funeral Home.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Betty Ann Bailey Hawkins and Molee Clark Hawkins, Sons: Tommy Hawkins and Denny Hawkins, Brothers: J.R., Shorty, Bill, Carlton, and Leon Hawkins.

Surviving are Daughter and Son in Law, Donna and Jerry Lathem; Grandsons, Robbie (Stephanie) Lathem and Adam (Carrie) Lathem; Great Grandchildren, Brody, Jessica, Chandler, Leihlani, Lorin, Madison, Briana, Libby, Hyker, and Lizbeth; Great Granddaughter. Aleena; Sister, Vernice Stoner, Special Companion, Lena Ingle; Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Donna would like to thank Tapestry Hospice for their wonderful care of her Daddy, with a special thank you to April Moore and Kim Massey.

Mrs. Martha Ann Busbin Price Shook

MRS. MARTHA ANN BUSBIN PRICE SHOOK, age 83, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday evening, April 13, 2020, in the local nursing home. A Lyerly, Georgia native, She was born to the late Walter and Beatrice Bagley Busbin on February 22, 1937. Mrs. Shook was an Educator, having taught at Chattooga High School for many years; she also loved dancing, and in her younger days taught dancing at the Fred Astair dance studio in Atlanta. Mrs. Shook was a member of Summerville First United Methodist Church and was preceded in dead by husband, the late Bobby Shook, grandson, the late Mark Price, and former husband, the late R. C. Price.

Surviving are daughter, Angela (Nick) Barton; son, Tony (Teresha) Price; stepchildren, Scott Shook, Sue (Lonnie) Wilson, Sarah Billings, Sandy (Lori) Shook; grandchildren, Tamara Scott, Haley Barton, Clint Barton, Harley Price, Lauren Truelove, Claire Humphey, Sarah Barnett, Seth Shook, Kyle Higgins, Stace Higgins,; several Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive.

Mr. Ralph Martin "Marty" Brown, Jr.

MR. RALPH MARTIN “MARTY” BROWN, JR., age 70, of Taylor Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020, at his residence. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 10, 1949 to the late Ralph Martin (Country) Brown and Curtis Mae Bush Brown. Mr. Brown was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, an active member of the Chattooga Athletic Boosters Club and was retired from Best Mfg. Company Human Resources.

Surviving are daughter and spouse, Lisa and Keven MacKinney; son and spouse, Jason and Buffy Brown; grandchildren, Jase Brown, Libby Brown, and Jeff MacKinney; former wife, Joyce Brown; uncle, Bobby Bush; special cousins, Mike and Jane Floyd, Karen Bush Hill, Linda Bush Upton, Martha Bishop, and Buddy Floyd; several Cousins.

Mrs. Doris Ellen Wilkerson Purcell, age 74 of Trion, Georgia, passed away March 18, 2020 at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia. Mrs. Purcell was born in Trion, Georgia on October 26, 1945, daughter of the late R.W. “Shorty” and Mildred Lane Wilkerson. She was a member of the Horizon Baptist Fellowship in Summerville, Georgia. Mrs. Purcell is retired from the State of Georgia Department of Corrections, working previously in customer service at Riegel Textile Corporation and the Department of Family and Children's Services in Ringgold. She was a devout Christian, spending many years working with young people and teaching Sunday school. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Purcell was preceded in death by a sister, Judith Ann Childers.

Mrs Purcell is survived by her husband of 61 years, Paul Lamar Purcell; sons, Paul “LaDon” (Patti) Purcell of Smyrna; Robert Allan “Bobby” Purcell of Trion; grandchildren, Emily Sara Purcell and William Lane Purcell of Smyrna; sister, Mary (Jerry) Fuller of Rome; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside service and interment will be held March 21, 2020 at 2 p.m. at the West Hill Cemetery in Trion with the Rev. Kevin Norton and Rev. John Paul Harris officiating. Pallbearers will be William Purcell, Sean Casey, Brian Baggett, Chris Purcell, Ryan Hamilton, and Matthew Swords.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no public visitation or formal funeral service. The family encourages everyone to consider their safety and the safety of others and practice social distancing if choosing to attend the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

MRS. MOLLIE H. GREENE, age 84, of Fort Payne, Alabama, formerly of Chattooga County, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2020, in the local nursing home. She was born in Centre, Alabama on April 6, 1935, a daughter of the late Edward and Haynie Mobbs Archer. Mrs. Greene was Pentecostal by faith, a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband the late James Russell Greene.

Surviving are daughters, Deborah (Dan) Hughes and Dawn (Wendell) Morris; sons, Dennis (Susan) Greene, Darrell (Judy) Greene, Danny (Shonna) Greene; sisters, Doris Taylor and Omadean Sessions; brother, James Archer; Nine Grandchildren, Nine Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews.

Due to concern of the public health crisis, a Private Graveside service will be held Thursday from West Hill Cemetery, with Pastor Andy Hutchens officiating.

MISS HALEY BRIANNA SMITH, age 22, of Fulmer Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday morning, March 15, 2020, from injuries received in an auto accident, Sunday. Born in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on October 4, 1997 to Lonnie R. and Tonya Payne Smith, who survive. Haley was a 2016 Graduate of Chattooga and enjoyed singing. She was a member of New Generation Church of God and a member of the Drama Team of the church. Haley was employed in the packing department of Branded Logic in LaFayette. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents the late Wayne and Maxine Morgan and maternal grandfather, the late Clayton Payne, Jr..

Surviving are parents, Lonnie and Tonya Payne Smith; maternal grandparents, Sheila Hayslip, Preston and Jan Hayslip; brother, Jacob Smith; niece, Melody Smith; several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 20th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Sue Woods Hurley

Sue Woods Hurley died peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Saturday, March 14, 2020. She was a prominent business woman as well as owner, chairperson and president of the only female-owned, national bank in Georgia and Florida, Southeast First National Bank.

Mrs. Hurley, her late husband and family ran a very successful grocery business for 44 years with stores in Summerville and Trion, Georgia as well as Fort Payne, Alabama. Mrs. Hurley purchased and took over the operation of First National Bank of Chattooga County, now Southeast First National Bank, in 1980 and quickly turned it into a profitable institution. In 2008, she purchased a Florida bank, merged it with Southeast First National Bank and moved it to Bay County, Florida. Regardless of the conditions of the economy, the institution under Mrs. Hurley’s supervision has maintained 40 consecutive years of annual operating profits. Mrs. Hurley was born on May 10, 1938 in Lyerly, Georgia to William C. Woods and Leila Brady Woods. She attended Lyerly School and was a letterman on the Lyerly Lions basketball team with her sister, Toni Woods Tutton. She also attended Northeast Alabama Community College, Bank Administration Institute and Georgia Banking School of the Georgia Banker’s Association in Athens, Georgia. She served as chairperson and CEO of the real estate development company Hurley’s Foods, Inc. She served as chairperson of the board of the Southeast First National Bank and chairperson of the board of Summerville/Trion Bancshares, Inc. She also served as a member on the board of Bank of Adairsville and Adairsville Bancshares, Inc.

Mrs. Hurley was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Tollie Fay Hurley; brothers, William Harold Woods and Brady Mell Woods; and sisters, Massena Woods Johnson, Ann Woods Cornish and Toni Woods Tutton. Mrs. Hurley is survived by a son and daughter in law, Edward F. Hurley and Ginny Craven Hurley; a daughter and son in law, Suzanne Hurley Bowman and Timothy E. Bowman; a son and daughter in law, William B. Hurley and Jamie Keeling Hurley; twelve grandchildren, Alexandria Dawes Hurley, Katherine Cutler Hurley, Madeline Grace Hurley, William Evan Bowman, William Craven McGuire, Katherine Ellen McGuire, Haley Bowman Barbaro, Jennifer Bowman Rogers, Kelsey Bowman Wiggins, Jacob E Bowman, Kendall Keeling and Kaitlyn Keeling; nephews, Roman William Kent, Joseph William Cornish, James Michael Woods, Harold Lynn Woods, Charles Randall Tutton, William M. Tutton and Peter Woods Cornish; and a brother in law and wife, Benjamin Gene Hurley and Marceline Mobbs Hurley.

Graveside services will be held at 1 P.M. on Sunday, March 15 by Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, Georgia at the Summerville Cemetery with Reverend Ken Johnson and Reverend L.D. Ludy presiding. Mrs. Nell Blalock Dodd, age 82, of Gaylesville, Alabama, passed away Wednesday morning in a Rome, Georgia hospital. She was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on July 27, 1937 to the late Calvin and Don Hartline Blalock. Mrs. Dodd was a member of Chesterfield Baptist Church and was retired from Harriett-Henderson Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Billy Joe Dodd.

Surviving are daughter, Patricia (Greg) Bentley; sons, Dale (Regina) Dodd, Herbert (Michelle) Dodd, Randy Dodd, and Joe Dodd; sister, Kathryn Vernon; brothers, Billy Blalock, Ronald Blalock, and Harold Blalock; Fifteen Grandchildren, Sixteen Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews.

A native of Dekalb County, Alabama, She was born to the late William L. and Clara Thomas Wood on August 19, 1927. A member of North Summerville Baptist Church, She was retired from Mount Vernon Mills. Preceding Her in death were husbands, the late Walter Maxey Parsons and the late Russell Edward Bynum.

Surviving are Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. MARCELA CECILIA MORENO NUNEZ, age 68, of Menlo, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020, at her residence. She was born on November 22, 1951 in San Fernando, Chile to the late Jorge Moreno and Amada Nunez. She was a kindergarten teacher for the Chile military.

Surviving are husband, Luis Gabriel Esteva Somoza; daughter and son-in-law, Carolina and Jason Wright; grandchildren, Ava Wright, Sawyer Wright, and Aiden Wright; sisters, Paulina Moreno and Paz Moreno; brother, Cristian Moreno.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 4th, at 5:00 P.M. From the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Ralph Wright officiating.
