ROAN

MR. EDDIE LEE ROAN, age 56, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, February 25, 2023, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on May 17, 1966 to the late Grady and Helen Kilgore Roan. Mr. Roan previously worked for Riegel Textile Corporation in the slashing department. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by siblings Carolyn Prather, Ronnie Roan, Donnie Ray Roan, Robert Roan, and Zandell Roan.

Surviving are sisters, Louise Jenkins, Geneva Everett, and Eva Mae McGraw; brothers, Loyle Roan and Alton Roan; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 1st, at 1:30 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, with Rev. JARRETT

Joan Elizabeth Selman Jarrett ascended to Heaven on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Floyd Medical Center in Rome, Georgia following a brief illness. Funeral services for Joan, age 69, of Summerville, Georgia will be held at Summerville First United Methodist Church Sunday, February 26,2023, at 3 pm with Rev. J Wesley Privett officiating.

She will be laid to rest following the service at the Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery with Jason Jarrett, Charlie Jarrett, Jeffrey Jarrett, Chris Jarrett, Seth Selman and Bart Nance serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Rainwater Funeral Home and 2 pm until the hour of service at Summerville First United Methodist Church on Sunday.

Joan Elizabeth Selman was born on August 6, 1953 in Rome, Georgia to James and Glenda Barton Selman. Joan was a 1971 graduate of Armuchee High School. She married DeJuan Jarrett in March 24, 1972 and moved to the Jarrett Farm in Summerville. She attended Berry College and obtained a degree in Elementary Education. She completed 32 years of teaching and retired in 2006 from Chattooga County Schools. She attended Summerville First United Methodist Church and was a member of Armuchee Baptist Church.

Joan spent her free time taking care of her family and friends and volunteering at her church. She was a devoted wife, Mama and Nana. When her children Lauren and Ryan were growing up, she spent her weekends, summers and holidays on the rodeo trail. She enjoyed also cooking and serving others. As a dairy farmer’s wife, she took special care of DeJuan. She loved to travel. Being Nana to Jurnee Rae was the highlight of her life for the last four years. She loved to tell Jurnee stories to her friends and family. Joan was so proud of Lauren and her accomplishments as an Agriculture Education Teacher in Chattooga County and of Ryan and his rodeo accomplishments. She was a devoted daughter and friend was even nicknamed by a special friend in Texas as “Nanny 911”.

Joan leaves behind her husband DeJuan and her daughter Lauren, both of Summerville, her son Ryan and his wife ShyAnne of Comanche, Oklahoma, and granddaughter, Jurnee Rae. She also leaves her mother Glenda Selman of Rome and her brother Steve Selman and his wife Sharon of Armuchee, aunt and uncle Delores and Ron Nance, in-laws Mike and Kathy Jarrett of Summerville, numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of sweet friends. She was preceded in death by her father James Crawford Selman and grandparents Thomas Spurgeon Selman and Elise Crawford Selman and Thomas Leonard Barton and Idell Miller Barton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerville First United Methodist or the Chattooga County Young Farmers Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are under the direction of Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, Georgia.

MR. J. AUSTIN MOORE, age 82 of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, February 21,2023 at his residence. He was born in Summerville, Georgia, June 11, 1940, son of the late Joe A. Moore and Ruby Gertrude Jackson Moore. He was a farmer by trade and member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Moore; daughters, Susan Moore, Donna Moore, Debra Moore; son, Kenneth & Tina Moore; Grandchildren, Timothy Sisemore, II, Christopher David Sisemore, Tyler Lee & Jessica Moore, Joshua & Autumn Moore, Josh Hampton, Autumn Hampton; Several Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, February 24, 2023, at 2 p.m. from the J.D. Hill Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor David Thompson officiating, interment in Subligna Cemetery. BLACKMON

MR. JAMES HARPER BLACKMON, JR., age 84, of Trion, Georgia, passed away Saturday, February 18, 2023, in a Chattanooga Hospital. He was born in Floyd County, Georgia on March 18, 1938, son of the late James Harper Blackmon, Sr. and Lillie D. Ingram Blackmon. He was employed as a Supervisor with Harriett – Henderson Mills for a number of years and a member of the Living Waters Ministries. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary J. Blackmon.

Surviving are daughter, Tina Loggins; sons, James H. Blackmon, III, Marty Blackmon, and Kenny Blackmon; Ten Grandchildren; Several Great Grandchildren; Sisters, Bonnie Blackmon and Shirley Kiser; Brothers, Johnny Blackmon and Rickey Blackmon; Several Nieces and Nephews.

SPEER

MRS. MARTHA SUE SPEER, age 89, of Gore Community, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday afternoon in a Rome hospital. A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia, She was born to the late Homer C. and Mary Doster Gordon on July 7, 1933. Mrs. Speer graduated from Gore High School, in 1950, was Valedictorian and was selected for Girl of the year with the school spirit and was the recipient of a $150.00 scholarship for college from the Summerville-Trion Rotary Club. She attended West GA. College for a year then changed from Home Economics to Business, then took a business course at Caroll Lynn Business School. Upon graduation was office manager for the Early Head Start until retirement. Was Saved and Baptized at age 12 and was a member at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at Gore. In 1948 was elected to serve as Church pianist and then as organist, playing until July 2022; She also taught the Beginners Sunday School Class for 26 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, the late Robert S. Speer, Jr., son and daughter-in-law, the late Steve and Marie Speer, and siblings, Sidney Gordon, George Ed Gordon, Don Gordon, and Harold Gordon.

Surviving are granddaughters, Lindsey Speer and Brittney Sanford; great grandchildren, Carlie Sanford, Colton Sanford, and Cason Sanford; special friend, Joyce Crane; several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 22nd, at 2:00 P.M. from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Pastor James Baird officiating, interment in the Church Cemetery. BARKLEY

MRS. MILDRED “VIRGINIA” JOHNSON BARKLEY, 97 of Jasper passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Northside Hospital - Cherokee in Canton, Georgia.

Mrs. Barkley was a lifelong resident of Summerville until 2017 when she moved to Jasper to be with her son. She was born August 23, 1925 in Summerville, Georgia to the late John Samuel Johnson and the late Ruth May Blalock. She was a true Prayer Warrior and member of the Summerville First Baptist Church where she taught a Ladies Sunday School Class for many years. She retired in 1985 after 25 years of service from the U.S. Department of Agriculture – Chattooga ASCS Office where she worked closely with the farmers of Chattooga County. In 2019, she became a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband, Robert “Bob” Barkley, Sr., (a decorated WWII Combat Veteran) and three Brothers, J.S. Johnson, Jr., Harold Johnson, and Arnold Johnson.

Surviving are her Son and very special Daughter in law, Robert “Robby” Barkley, Jr. & Mary Barkley; Two Grandsons, Paul Barkley (III) and Brandon Barkley, Three Great Granddaughters Dannin Rose Barkley, Liliana Barkley & Olivia Laurel Barkley. Several Nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday, February 20th, 2023 at the Summerville First Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Mason and Rev. Barry Peppers officiating. Burial will follow in the Summerville Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Mark Schrader, Joseph Jackson, Joe Barkley, Mike Tomlin, Ross Clifton, Doug Carlock, Nick Chamblee and Lamar Thomas.  MR. William G. (BILL) DAVIDSON, age 92, of Rome, Georgia, formerly of Atlanta, passed away Monday, February 13, 2023, in a Rome hospital.  Mr. Davidson was born in Maysville, Georgia to the late Paul and Mahuldah Wilson Davidson, on December 14, 1939.  He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, was a Veteran of Korea, serving in the U. S. Air Force, was a businessman for many years in the Atlanta area.  In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by brothers, Jack, Teddy, and Robert Davidson.

 

            Surviving are his wife, Bobbye Jo Davidson; son, Michael Davidson; brother in law Doug (Beth) Wilson; several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins also survive.

 

            Funeral services will be held Friday, February 17, 2023 at 2:00 P.M., from the Trion First Baptist Church with Dr. Warren Moorehead and Pastor Casey Bramlett officiating, interment West Hill Cemetery.  Active Pallbearers Wil Graham, Tristan Graham, Steve Davidson, Ryan Starks, Tony Walker, and Taso Karahalios. MR. DONALD SAMUEL FORD, age 61, of Melba Drive, Trion, Georgia, passed away Monday, February 6, 2023, at his residence following an unexpected attack. He was born to the late Donald Dean Ford and Kathleen Ruth Sweet Ford on March 2, 1961 in Chattooga County, Georgia. He was owner and operator of Ford Construction.

Surviving are daughters, Jessica Amos and Ashley Ford; son-Brian Ware; Six Grandchildren.

A life celebration will be held at a later date.

 MRS. POLLY GILBREATH, age 84, of Tyler Street, Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023, in a Rome Hospital.  She was born July 1, 1938 to the late Fred and Esther Roberts Stewart.  Mrs. Gilbreath was a retired beautician, and member of the Summerville First Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert L. Gilbreath, a son, Eddie Lively, a daughter, Kaye Casey, a great granddaughter, Sarah Blalock and a sister, Dot Watkins.

 

Surviving are Son, Mark (Susan) Gilbreath; Grandchildren, Cara (Tony) Blalock, Carla (Bucky) Chisolm, Laura (Ben) Latta, Miles Gilbreath, Michael (Paige) Bradley; Great Grandchildren, Kayleigh Byars, Layton, HarperAnne, and Scout Chisolm, Calleigh Hall, Ty Hall, and Madyln Henderson, Brooks Bradley and Sydney Bradley; Brother Sonny Stewart (Mary Lou Bame).  Several Nieces, Nephews, Great Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. MARSHA RAY WILSON, age 76 of Rose Circle Trion, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at her residence surrounded by family, friends and her best friend Juanita Nelson and daughter Cathy Coudsy. Mrs. Wilson was born in Chicago, Illinois, February 9, 1946, daughter to the late Eddie and Evelyn Schecter. She was a retired Poker dealer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Max Wilson, son, Adam Wilson, brother, Allan Schecter, and a grandson, Alex Wilson.

MRS. MARTHA BARTLETT GAINES, age 86, of Back Berryton Road, entered her Heavenly home Monday, February 6, 2023 at her residence. She was born August 12, 1936 in Chattoogaville, Georgia, daughter of the late Ellon Carr Bartlett and James Alfred Bartlett. She was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church. After raising her children, she was employed by Century Glove Company and later by Mount Vernon Mills before her retirement. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Joe B. Gaines whom she married July 2, 1953; brothers, Wesley, Roland, Gordon, Bill, James, and Dennis Bartlett, J.T. and Jim McAteer; sisters, infant, Barbara Lee Bartlett, Winola Brown, Ola Copeland, Lena Mae Nations, Mildred Gilreath, Bell Atkins, Sybil Hayes and Christine Bohannon and also great, great granddaughter, Joselyn Phibbs, and special friend, Helen Dean Reynolds.



Martha loved the Lord. She gave her life to Christ at an early age and always trusted in Him through all her difficulties. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother helping to raise and take care of all her children. She always has Sunday dinner all the way back to the beginning of her marriage when family would come to visit. After retirement, she began quilting, making numerous, all handmade, quilts for all her family. She never believed in being idle, work was the name of the game.

Survivors include her children, James Patrick (Pat) and Karen Gaines and Brenda Gail and Nelson Lee Wilson; grandchildren, Ethan Gaines, Cynthia and Nick Swords, April and Derek Adams; great grandchildren, Dylan and Levi Adams, Kayla, Caitlin, Aleigha and Scottie Satterfield; great, great grandchildren, Lilah Marie Gazaway, Parker Phibbs, and on the way Paxton Phibbs.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, February 11th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Andy Hutchins, Pastor Harold Helton, and Pastor Jason Lee officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery. LOWRANCE


 David Lee Lowrance, age 59 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, January 30, 2023, unexpectedly. David was born in New Boston, Texas on January 14,1964. He was employed at Shaw Industries, had recently retired from 20-plus years as a truck driver and proudly served in the U.S. Army.

David is preceded in death by his parents Marie Lancaster and Don Lowrance and his brothers Tony Lowrance and Davey Lowrance.

David is survived by his wife Kris Lowrance of Summerville. He is also survived by his children Jeff Lowrance, Michael Lowrance, Bridgette (Caleb) Adelstein; Chassity (Jordan) Fowler; his stepchildren Amber(David)Tapp and Michael Hammond; his brothers Donnie (Savanna) Lowrance; Todd (Heidi) Lowrance; his sisters Amanda (Colby) Smith; Mara Rhinehardt; his uncles Dennis Lowrance; Wilbur(Mary) Lancaster; and Sebastain (Kelly) Attaway. David was blessed with 18 grandchildren       and nine great grandchildren.

David enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially fishing with his father–in–law Don Smith. He was a loving husband, father and loyal friend.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 2p.m. at Rising Fawn Church of God, located at 3425 US Hwy 11 in Rising Fawn, Georgia. All who knew David are welcome to join the family in celebrating his life.

Mr. David Lamar Love, age 80 of Red Oak Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at his residence. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on March 8, 1942, son of the late William Marion Love and Fannie Avis Lewis Love. Mr. Love was a Veteran of the United States Army serving in the Viet Nam war, a member of Trion Heights Baptist Church, and a member of various Veteran and community organizations. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kristopher Wallin and siblings, William Marion Love, Ruth Coker and Robert Love.

Surviving are his Wife, Vera Nell Love; Children, Colleen Cordle, Vernon Johnson, Robert Johnson; 9 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren, 6 Great Great Grandchildren; Siblings, Jenny Tucker, Winston Love, Walter Love, Ben Love; Special Sister-in-law, Margie Love; Special Nephew, Steve Love.

Funeral Services were Saturday, February 4th, at 1:00 p.m. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Vernon Johnson and Odell Anderson officiating, Interment in West Hill Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers were Members of American Legion Post #129, members of Mason-McCauley VFW Post #6688, Sons of Legion Squadron #129, the Adult Men’s Sunday School Class of Trion Heights Baptist Church, and Members of the Chattooga County Wildlife Club. Military Honors were rendered at graveside by the Shanklin-Attaway American Legion Post #5 Honorary Guard.
