OWINGS

Ms. Betty Jean Yarbrough Owings, age 88, went home to be with Jesus on June 13, 2022 surrounded by her family. We are rejoicing in knowing she is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Betty Jean was born on March 31, 1934, daughter of the late Hill Yarbrough and Lucinda Rickett Yarbrough. She married her sweetheart, the late Roy Jackson Owings on December 20, 1953. They were married for 43 wonderful years and made their home in the Gore community. She was a faithful member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and attended until her health declined. Also preceding her in death were a sister, Julia Nell “Judy” Salmon, and a brother, Johnny Yarbrough.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Owings (Tammy) and Jeff Owings (Lisa), four grandchildren (Julia Park (Jason), Hillary Carpenter (Justin), Haley Brooke Johnson (Andrew), and Sage Owings), a sister, Emily Hill (James) , 5 great- grandchildren, and several special nieces and nephews.

Betty Jean loved her family more than anything in the world. She loved nothing more than cooking for them and having everyone together. She loved to spoil her grandchildren with homemade cookies, cakes and candies. Needless to say, she was an excellent cook, and excellent mother, mother-in-law grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. Betty retired as Chief Registrar of Chattooga County in November of 2010 after working in that office for 37 years.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 15 at 10:00 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Brother James Baird officiating. Interment will follow the service at the church cemetery. Pallbearers are Jimmy Barron, William Mitchell, Benji Price, Clint Hunter, Danny McGraw, Greg Shaw, Scott Everett, and Sam Jones.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery fund. Donations may be mailed to the care of Pam Hammonds at 204 Congress Street, Summerville, Georgia, 30747.

Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
