MR. HAROLD PICKLE, age 87, of Mahan Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning at his residence. He was born in Cherokee County, Alabama on September 25, 1922 to the late Tim and Emma Brady Pickle. Mr. Pickle was a member and Sunday School teacher of South Summerville Baptist Church. He was a D Day Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division. Mr. Pickle was retired truck driver for Ragland Oil Company and was preceded in death by his wife the late Helen Rosebud Willingham Pickle, son-the late Billy Don Pickle, and brother-the late Wilburn Pickle.
Surviving are Grandchildren-Michelle & Todd Stricklin, Tim & Paulette Pickle, and Jason Pickle all of Summerville; Daughter-in-Law-Sarah Pickle Garrison; Great Grandchildren-Ali Finster, Lauren Finster, Tyler Pickle, Lindsey Stricklin, and Spencer Stricklin; Sisters-Maurene Wallin and Haynie Speer both of Summerville and Waynie Edge of Trion; several Nieces and Nephews.

MRS. PEGGY MAYNARD, age 75, of Bitttings Avenue-Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010, at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born to the late Frank and Lula Josephene Chastain McGraw on March 4, 1935. She was a homemaker and attended the Church of God.
Surviving are husband-Thomas Maynard; daughter-Pam Henderson of Summerville; sons-Marty Middleton of Summerville and Joey Middleton of Trion; sisters-JoAnn Hughes of Summerville, Irene Horton of LaFayette, and Coleen Waits of Tampa, FL.; 12 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren, several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

A native of Trion, Georgia, Mr. Campbell was born to the late Andrew and Etta Mae Westbrook Campbell on January 8, 1937. He attended the Kennesaw United Methodist Church, was a U.S. Army Veteran, and was retired from General Motors Corporation.

Mr. Chappelear, a prominent Chattooga County Farmer, was a member of the Menlo United Methodist Church, a Veteran of WW II and was preceded in death by his wife the late Lena Mae Chappelear.

MR. JOHN MELTON OSBY, age 83, of Highland Avenue-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday, May 9, 2010, in the local nursing home. A native of Etowah County, Alabama He was born to the late Walter Richard and Nallie McClung Osby on February 28, 1927. Mr. Osby was retired from the Weaving Department of Mt. Vernon Mills, served in WW II in the U.S. Army PFC, and was preceded in death by His wife the late Gussie Lee Whitt Osby and a daughter the late Janie Kay Osby.
Surviving are daughter-Vickie Osby Austin; son-John S. Osby both of Summerville; 2 grandchildren-Be Jay Osby of Atlanta and Matt Austin of Summerville; special friends-Lawrence Broome and Greg Hughes, who’s acts of kindness and assistance were like sons to Mr. Osby.

MRS. BARBARA S. HEROD, age 68, of Wildlife Lake Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (May 7, 2010) morning in a Rome hospital. Mrs. Herod was born in Gaylesville, Alabama on October 15, 1941 to the late Cecil Cleveland Battles and Gertha Lee Gilbert Battles who survives. Baptist by Faith She was in retail sales for many years. She was preceded in death by a brother the late Charles Battles.

MRS. CHRISTINE HAWKINS FOX, age 62, of Hwy. #114-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday (April 25, 2010) afternoon at her residence following an extended illness. Mrs. Fox was born to the late Howard and Mae Johnnie Umphurs Hawkins on July 16, 1947. She was a member of Dry Valley Baptist Church and was retired from Oak View Nursing & Rehab. Center.

Born in Gordon County, Georgia on August 7, 1923, She was a daughter of the late Arch and Arrie Beck Reed. Ms. Langford was an accountant for the former Jackson Chevrolet and the former Garnett’s Furniture Store in Summerville later was a substitute school teacher. She was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class of the Church. Preceding Her in death was 2 sisters Sallie Reed and Annie Ruth Reed Waddell.

MRS. RACHEL PAULINE LANEY, age 84, went to be with the Lord Thursday (April 8, 2010). She resided at #31 Curran Street, Summerville, Georgia. Mrs. Laney was born to the late Walter and Ruby Abercrombie Collum in Cherokee County, Georgia on November 11, 1925. She was a wonderful, loving mother and homemaker, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Thomas Charlie Laney, daughter-Verdice Laney, sisters-Ethel Collum, Inez Peacock, and Nellie McGuire. She was a Christian in the body of Christ at South Commerce Church of Christ. She will be greatly missed by her family who loved her very much.

Martin and the late J. C. Barkley, granddaughter-the late Laurie Diane Martin.

MR. LAWRENCE D. POWELL, age 82, of Mentone, Alabama passed away Saturday (March 27, 2010) at his residence following an illness. A native of Cherokee County, Alabama He was born to the late Albert Hinton and Mary Jones Powell on July 18, 1927. Mr. Powell was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and was retired from the card room of Mt. Vernon/Riegel Mills. He was preceded in death by six siblings-the late Katherine Cavin, Mary Nell Langston, Lois Boydston, Francis Cavin, Madelyn Downer, and Houston Powell.
Surviving are daughters-Kay Sentell and Margie Saine; son-Dwight Powell all of Mentone; brother-in-law-Owen Langston of Chattanooga; seven Grandchildren, twelve Great Grandchildren, two Great Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. SUE YOUNGBLOOD, age 64, of Mahan Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday (March 25, 2010) evening at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia she was born to the late Herman and JoAnn Ledford Hunter on June 6, 1945. Mrs. Youngblood was preceded in death by her husband the late Tommy Youngblood and daughter the late Susan Reena Owens.

MR. JACK DOYLE WARREN, age 58, of Milton Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday afternoon at his residence. A Summerville native Mr. Warren was born to the late Jack Warren and Ann Abernathy Warren Martin who survives. Jack was an LPN working in Trion, Chattooga, and Northwest Regional Hospitals before retirement.

MRS. VIRGINIA SPAIN BULLARD, age 77, of Saratoga Way-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday morning at Her residence. Born in Summerville, Georgia on November 25, 1932 she was a daughter of the late Jimmie and Gertrude Norton Spain. Mrs. Bullard was a member of Lyerly First Baptist Church, was retired from the tufting department of Georgia Rug Mill, enjoyed part time teaching and was preceded in death by Her husband the late Bennie L. Bullard on January 28, 1990 and an infant son the late Kenneth Bullard on July 24, 1951.

MR. PAUL SMITH, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (March 5, 2010) evening in a Rome hospital. Native of Eatonton, Georgia He was born to the late James Paul Smith, Sr. and Willie Lee trotter Smith on August 18, 1922. Mr. Smith was a member, Deacon, and former Treasurer of Lyerly First Baptist Church, a Veteran of WW II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, and was former Supervisor of the shipping department of Bigelow-Sanford Georgia Rug Mill. He was preceded in death by His wife the late Mary Louise Hall Smith on August 18, 2004.

A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia He was born to the late George Sidney Kirby and Ruby Lee Phillips Kirby who survives. Mr. Kirby attended the North Summerville Baptist Church, was retired auto body repairman, and a Veteran of the U. S. Marines Corps. He was preceded in death by a sister, the late Sara MacArthur and brothers the late L.M. “Bud” Kirby and Donald Wayne Kirby.

MR. Wayne Groce, age 83, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday, February 19, 2010, in a Rome hospital following an extended illness. A native Chattooga Countian, He was born to the late Charles Donald and Vera Josephine Stephenson Groce on January 6, 1927. Mr. Groce was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, Deacon, and sang in the choir for forty years. He was also former Choir Director for South Summerville Baptist Church. He was the last surviving member of the Homeland Harmony Quartet, singing lead in 1951 through 1953. Mr. Groce sang at the Bill Gather Homecoming honoring the Homeland Harmony Quartet. He played pitcher, outfielder, and third baseman in the Georgia Textile Baseball League later coaching Little League baseball and softball. Was the former owner/operator of Summerville Pure Oil Service Station, was retired agent for American General Life & Acc. Ins. Co. Wayne enjoyed hunting, was an avid quail hunter, and a Veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Army.

MR. STANLEY MOORE (STAN) WILLINGHAM, age 51, of Fish Hatchery Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Sunday (February 7, 2010).
A native Chattooga Countian He was born on September 19, 1958 to the late Babe Lee Willingham and Shirley Ann Moore Willingham who survives. Mr. Willingham was employed by Farmers’ Furniture and formerly the Packing Department of Mt. Vernon/Riegel Textile.

Mrs. Emma Maxine Strange age 76, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday morning, February 2, 2010, at her residence. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia she was born to the late Lewis and Gertrude Ray Helton on November 29, 1933 and was a member of Berryton Baptist Church. Mrs. Strange was preceded in death by her son Ricky Strange, sisters-Pauline Bridges and Virginia Harris, brothers-Alvin Helton, Buck Helton, and Hobby Helton.

MRS. MARY ANN PESTERFIELD, 83, of Summerville, Georgia died Saturday, January 30, 2009, morning in a Rome hospital, while surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born in Summerville, Georgia on February 22, 1926, the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. William King, Sr. She was graduated from Georgia State College for Women and taught 4th grade at Summerville Elementary School for 30 years. She received her Masters of Education from the University of Georgia, and was honored as Chattooga County Star Teacher in 1971. In 1975 she married E.C. Pesterfield, Sr. who preceded her in death June , 1991. Mrs. Pesterfield was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Iota Chapter, Chattooga County Retired Teachers Association and Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church, Trion, Georgia.
Survivors include son-Thomas E. Neal, Athens; step daughter-Mrs. Kirk (Anne Pesterfield) Krueger, Trion; step son-J. David Pesterfield, Florida; nieces-Betsy King Dellenback and Mrs. Malcolm (Lucy King) Lee, Summerville, & Mrs. Marvin (Mary King) Czentnar, Rome; sister-in-law-Mrs. John William (Elliott) King, Jr., Summerville; her brother, John William King, Jr. and step son, E. Charles Pesterfield, Jr. preceded Her in death. Grandchildren, Mrs. Douglas (Lyn Pesterfield) Murajda, Boiling Springs, S.C., Susanne Pesterfield, and Margaret Pesterfield, Atlanta, and William Krueger and Anna Krueger, Chapel Hill, N.C. MR. LORENZO (PETE) WILSON, age 81, a resident of Bittings Avenue-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (January 1, 2010) morning at his residence. Born in Dutton, Alabama on October 16, 1928 He was a son of the late James Aubrey Wilson, Sr. and Lena Ave Eva Gibson Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a member and Deacon of Midway Baptist Church, was retired from the needling department of Georgia Rug Mill and was retired used car dealer.

A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born in Trion on December 30, 1925 to the late George D. and Grace Lee McBride Erwin. Mrs. Garner was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church, a homemaker, former Nurse, and for several years an entrepreneur. She was preceded in death by first husband Dr. William U. Hyden on February 4, 1987.

MRS. MARY JO WHITE, age 71, of Maddox Lake Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning at her residence following a brief illness. A native Chattooga countian She was born to the late William and Mae Wilder Harris on November 10, 1938. Mrs. White was retired retail sales manager and was preceded in death by her first husband the late L. M. Kirby.

A native Chattooga Countian, She was born on June 23, 1921 to the late George Franklin and Lizzie Louella Skates Baggett. Mrs. Guinn was a member of the Mt. View Baptist Church, retired from the spinning room of Mt. Vernon Mills, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Rev. Archie Edward Guinn; sisters-Katie Baggett and Lemmus Dearing, and a brother-George Baggett.

MR. TARRY L. DUPREE, age 50, of Dupree Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Monday (November 30, 2009) in a Rome hospital. Born on March 13, 1959 he was a son of the late Edna Marie Dupree. Mr. Dupree was a former employee of the Sanitation Department of the Town of Trion.

MONTINE SHACKELFORD JONES, age 101, of Gore, Georgia passed away at her residence on November 28, 2009. Daughter of George Orr and Cynthia Garner Shackelford. She was born August 21, 1908 in Wilcox County, Georgia where she was raised and schooled near Abbeville. As a young woman she and her family returned to their family home in Athens. She graduated from Georgia State Teachers College with a degree in home economics and began her teaching career in Brazelton, Georgia. She was recruited to come to Chattooga County in the 1930’s to teach at Gore School. Taking a break from teaching to start a family, she returned to teaching at Summerville Elementary School in 1956, and retired from the Chattooga County School System in 1976. She lived and died in the home her father-in-law and husband were born in. Her loves were her family, home, and the beauties of nature. She never met a flower she didn’t love. She was preceded in death by John S. Jones, her husband of 54 years, a brother, Will Shackelford of Abbeville, GA., and sisters Moina Lackey of Greenville,S.C., and Helen and Hazel Shackelford of Decatur, GA.
Surviving her are a son Sam Jones of Gore, GA., and son and daughter-in-law David and Shelli Jones also of Gore. MR. WILLIS SAMUEL JAMES, former Mayor of Summerville, Georgia and Chattooga County businessman, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 22, 2009, after a long illness. Born in Cobb County on October 17, 1913, Mr. James resided for most of his life in Chattooga County. His father, Cleland Columbus James moved to the area to establish the CCC Fish Hatchery in 1929. Willis James delivered fish all over the state of Georgia with his father. Mr. James graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with an engineering degree. His professional career included work in insurance and serving as manager of the Summerville Manufacturing Company for many years. He later worked with Roman Chemical Company. Mr. James was a member and former Elder of Summerville Presbyterian Church, and was involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents, Cleland Columbus and Annie Lou James, his brothers Herman, Edward, and Albert, his first wife Lola Beatty James, and their daughter, Martha Addie James Hagood.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary James; three grandsons, Gregory, Robert, and Richard Hagood, their father Dr. Felton Hagood, and several great grandchildren along with an extended step family.
Memorial services will be held at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home on Wednesday (November 25th), with visitation at 2 P.M. and the service at 3 P.M. Interment will follow in the Summerville Cemetery. MR. F. H. (PETE) BONEY, age 94, of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, died Thursday, (November 19, 2009), in Brunswick, Georgia. He was born December 13, 1914, in Fitzgerald, GA. a son of the late L.W. and Emma Swinney Boney. He graduated from the University of Miami where he played fullback for the Hurricanes. He began a teaching and coaching career in Trion, GA in 1936. During WW II he served in the U.S. Navy and continued in the Reserves for 25 years, retiring as a Commander. After the war he graduated from Emory University Law School and in 1957 opened a law practice in Summerville, GA for some thirty years. During his career he was elected to one term as the Judge of City Court in Chattooga County. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Brewer Boney, and their son, Peter L. Boney.
He is survived by a daughter, Marcia Boney of St. Simons Island; grandchildren and husbands, Belle and Link Baker, Lilburn, GA; Leigh and Dr. Jeff Baumbach, Dothan, AL and Ann and George Williams , Knoxville, TN; great grandchildren Virginia, Elizabeth, Will, and Mary Grant Baumbach; Emily, George, Cullen, Maggie, and Kate Williams and Brewer Baker.

MR. S. HARRIS CALDWELL, JR., age 71, of Villa Rica, Georgia passed away Saturday afternoon at his residence. A native of Cedartown, Georgia, He was born to the late S. Harris Caldwell, Sr. and Irene Long Caldwell on April 9, 1938. Mr. Caldwell operated the former Lowry’s Department Store for seventeen years, First Federal Savings & Loan, and was certified public accountant until retirement. He was preceded in death by wife the late Jane Lowry Caldwell on July 11, 1993.

Mrs. Gilley was a member of the Summerville First United Methodist Church, retired from B B & T Bank after 32 years of service, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Clarence Gorman Gilley on June 10, 1998.

MR. JOHN KENNETH (J.K.) RAMEY, age 98, of Chamblee, Georgia died October 27, 2009 in Cumming, Georgia. Native to Monroe, West Virginia He was born to the late Roy and Myrtle Lee Ramey on April 15, 1911. Mr. Ramey was owner and operator of Ramey Tire Company of Atlanta and was preceded in death by his wife the late Trilby Howard Ramey.

MR. BOB RUNYAN, age 77, of Givens Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday (October 25, 2009) morning in a LaFayette health care. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee He was born to the late Roscoe and Hassie Murphy Runyan on January 1, 1932. Mr. Runyan was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U. S. Navy and retired from the carding department of Harriett-Henderson Mill. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Hazel Idell Monroe Runyan on January 3, 2009.

Mrs. Archibald A. (Emily Nixon) Farrar, Summerville, died on October 4, 2009 at her daughter’s home following a brief illness.
A descendant of pioneer families that settled in Floyd and Chattooga Counties in 1845, she was the daughter of Pennington Mason Nixon and Marian Dean Nixon. She was born July 25, 1922 and was preceded in death by her husband, Archibald A. Farrar, her parents, a brother, Pennington Mason Nixon, III and a sister, Challis Sydney Nixon.
Mrs. Farrar graduated from Rome Schools and attended the University of Georgia where she pledged Chi Omega Sorority. After college she cherished the few years she worked at the Georgia Power Company. She was a member of the Chattooga County Historical Society and Trion Presbyterian Church. She also served on the Board of the Summerville Cemetery Association.
Mrs. Farrar was affectionately known as “Miss Emily” to all of her students in the very first kindergarten started in Summerville in the 1950s. She taught Sunday School and was a substitute teacher for years in the Chattooga County School system. She had a love for history and genealogy and particularly enjoyed being the keeper of her family’s history in her own “History Room.” She was the person to consult on the issues of history relating to both Chattooga and Floyd Counties and she wrote the History of Chattooga County in 1962. An exceptional cook, she loved cooking and entertaining her family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Archibald A. Farrar, Jr. and his wife, Nell, of Summerville and Robert Nixon Farrar of Nashville, Tennessee and one daughter, Janet Farrar Byington and her husband, Bill, of Rome. Also surviving are five grandchildren, John Pennington Farrar of Atlanta, Georgia, Challis Elizabeth Latta of Gainesville, Georgia, Katherine Gates Farrar of Rome, Emily Allgood Griffin of Rome and Mary Catherine Farrar of Athens, Georgia and two step grandchildren, Will Byington, III of Rome and Dr. Kelly Byington of St. Petersburg, Florida.
The family will hold a visitation at the residence of Mrs. Farrar at 164 Virginia Drive, Summerville, Georgia on Tuesday from 5-7 PM. A burial service will be held at Earl Rainwater Funeral Home on Wednesday at 3 PM with interment to follow at The Summerville Cemetery with the Reverend William Flannagan officiating.
The family requests no flowers but memorials may be sent to the Trion Presbyterian Church, 224 Park Avenue, Trion, Ga 30753 or an historical charity of your choice.

Mrs. Lucile Waters Owens, age 89, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday morning (September 28, 2009) in LaFayette, Georgia. Born in Chattooga County, Georgia on January 16, 1920 she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Sally Mae Caldwell Waters and a member of South Summerville Baptist Church. Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband Hill Owens, three brothers: Lloyd Waters, Paul Waters and Jerry Waters and two sisters: Eula Hall and Sybil Deerman.

MRS. LYNN LITTLE WOFFORD, age 48, of Woodstock, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, passed away Saturday, (September 26, 2009) in a Marietta hospital following a sudden attack. A native Chattooga Countian, Mrs. Wofford was born to Gordon H., Sr. and Bernice Grubbs Little on July 1, 1961. Lynn was a 1979 graduate of Chattooga High School and the 1992 graduating Class of Berry College. She was a member of Christ Community Church in Kennesaw where She was active in the Praise Team (singing and learning songs were Her passion). Mrs. Wofford was also active in the Church Mission Team & leading Women’s Covenant Groups; having gone on mission trips to Peru and Thailand. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents-Dr. & Mrs. R. N. Little and maternal grandparents-Mr. & Mrs. Lamar Grubbs.

MR. JAMES GRIFFIN SANDERS, age 58, of Rome, Georgia passed away Friday, August 28, 2008, from injuries received in an automobile accident near Lucedale, Mississippi. He was born to the late Foye K. and Rosa Lee Norwood Sanders on November 22, 1950 in Gaston County, North Carolina. Mr. Sanders was a Professional Photographer and was preceded in death by a son, the late Benjamin Sanders and a sister, the late Juanita Sanders Wall.

MR. LEROY BROWN, age 86, of Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday (August 27, 2009) morning in a Ft. Oglethorpe hospital. Born in Walker County, Georgia on July 9, 1923 He was a son of the late Oscar Franklin and Mattie Ann Adams Brown. Mr. Brown was Baptist by Faith and retired from the Weave Shop of Mt. MR. JAMES R. JOHNSON, age 66, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (July 24, 2009) evening. He was born on December 27, 1942 to the late James Bethel Johnson and Essie Lee Hale Parker. Mr. Johnson was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church and for several years was a law enforcement officer for the Atlanta Police Department, City of Summerville, Chattooga County Sheriff’s office, Trion Police Department, and LaFayette Police Department; later was a truck driver before retirement. He was preceded in death by a son the late James Allen Johnson on June 19, 2000.
Surviving are grandsons-James Anthony Johnson and Joseph Dennis Johnson; sisters-Virginia Gordy of Gaylesville, AL., Shelia Cothran, Joanna Thoreson, and Lynda Carroll all of Summerville; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

A native of Saint Joseph, Missouri Mr. Gannon was born February 5, 1925 to the late Donald G. and Frances Wolf Boyer, and was raised in Chicago, Illinois by his adopted mother-Grace Estelle Gannon. He was retired from the ground crew of Transworld Airlines and a member of Horizon Baptist Fellowship.
