KAY

James Bradley “Brad” Kay, May 11, 1960, passed away Thursday June 27, 2024. He was an avid reader and frequently visited the Trion Library at least weekly after he retired. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School and attended Northwestern Technical College where he received a certification in electronics. The family grew up in the Army and settled in Rock Springs where Brad worked farming in his early years with his dad. Later in life he became a caregiver for his mom Betty Jean Kay.

He is survived by his sister Kim Palmour (Albert) and brother Kenny Kay (Hannah) and a lot of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He loved Christmas. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer a donation to the Chattooga County Library (Trion)

Private Family Graveside service will be Tuesday, July 2nd, from Needmore Cemetery. Active Pallbearers Keith Morrison, Preston Morrison, Albert Palmour, Jeremy Guinn, Jared Guinn, and Mike Green.

COLBERT

Mr. Stacy “Tweety” Colbert, age 51, of Farm Road, Trion, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly Friday afternoon, June 28, 2024, from a sudden attack. He was born in Rome, Georgia on April 20, 1973, the Son of Debby Gilleland Turner and Gary Colbert. He was a graduate of Trion High School, an insurance adjuster, and Farmer. Stacey was preceded in death by a sister, the late Carrie Colbert and step father, the late Tony Gilleland.

Surviving are His wife, Paige Colbert; mother, Debby Gilleland Turner; father & step mother, Gary & Karen Colbert; daughters, Jordyn Colbert and Morgan Colbert; step brothers, Ben Bandy, David Gilleland, Anthony Gilleland, and Chris Proctor; several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins also survive.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 3rd, at 12:00 noon from the Beersheba Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Sammy Simmons officiating. BRUMLOW

MR. ALBERT SIDNEY BRUMLOW, age 95, of Long Hollow Road, Trion, Georgia, passed away Monday afternoon, June 24, 2024, at his residence. A native of Calhoun, Georgia, He was born July 10, 1928, to the late Frank and Maude Slaughter Brumlow. Mr. Brumlow attended the Welcome Hill Baptist Church and was retired from the Spinning Department of Mount Vernon Mills. In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Clory Elizabeth Howell Brumlow, children, the late Jerry and Rebecca Brumlow, and several siblings.

Surviving are daughter, Jane Martin (Steve) Clowdis; son, Joel Brumlow; sister, Martha Brumlow Williamson; half sister, Sharon Guttuso; granddaughters, Clory Brumlow Beene and Mary Brumlow Abernathy; grandson, Tracey Martin; several Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. MARY LAURA ANN SMITH CHILDERS, age 85, of West Tate Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away peacefully, at home, Thursday morning, surrounded by her Family. She was born in Chattooga County, Georgia on March 25, 1939, a daughter of the late Forney Wes Smith, Sr. and Alma Lee Brown Smith. Mrs. Childers was a Homemaker, member of Dry Valley Baptist Church where She was a Sunday School Teacher, Flower Lady, and Christmas Play Director. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by husband the late James Marvin Childers, Sr., sons-Larry Randell Childers and James Marvin (Jimmy) Childers, Jr., and grandson, Joshua James Childers.

Surviving are daughter, Susan Elaine (Paul) Dodd; sons, Stephen Landon Childers and Gary Lee Rape; daughters-in-law, Debbie Childers and Raynell Childers; sisters, Rebecca Ann Pettyjohn and Judy Lynne (Scott) Noel; brothers, Richard Franklin (Linda) Smith and Forney Wes (Tonia) Smith, Jr.; 14 Grandchildren, 34 Great Grandchildren, 6 Great Great Grandchildren; special friend, Dennis Crews; several Nieces and Nephews.

SHIFLETT

MRS. JAQUELYN GLENDA (JACKIE) SHIFLETT, age 66, of Menlo, Georgia, passed away Friday morning at Her residence. Mrs. Shiflett was born in Rome, Georgia on May 16, 1958, a daughter of the late John Clifford Holder and Patricia Lee Aycock Holder, who survives. Mrs. Shiflett was a Para Legal, retiring from Albert Palmer Law Firm in 2021 after thirty three years of service.

Surviving are Her husband, Tim Shiflett; mother, Patricia Holder; sons, Chris Shiflett and Michael Shiflett; Six Grandchildren; sisters, Kathy and Terri; brother, John; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. CHARLIE MONROE HOGUE, age 68, of Marks Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday morning in LaFayette, Georgia health care. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on January 12, 1956, a son of the late Fred Deforest and Audra Mae Hogue. Mr. Hogue was a retired textile worker and in addition to Parents, was preceded in death by his companion, Treva June Fowler and several Sisters and Brothers.

Surviving are sons, Charles Dewayne Hogue and Joshua Monroe McGuire; daughters, Kimberly Rollins, Rachel McGuire Dotson, and Shawna McGuire; brothers, Calvin Hogue, Howard Hogue, and Dewey Hogue; several Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive.

MR. HOWARD DALE SCOGGINS, age 74, of Summerville, Georgia, Subligna Community, passed away Monday afternoon, June 10, 2024, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Scoggins was born in Chattooga County, Georgia to the late Howard Smith Scoggins and Christine Pledger Scoggins on October 23, 1949. He was a member of the Perennial Springs Baptist Church and retired Salesmen.

MR. BILLY JOE BICE, age 58 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, May 30, 2024 at his residence. He was born in Summerville, Georgia on June 7, 1965, son of the late Frank Bice Sr, and Vera Mae Bundrum Bice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Regina Bice; brothers, Frank Bice, Jr., Leonard Fay Bice, Richard Lamar Bice, Terry Lee Bice and Roland Lee Bice, Sr.

Surviving are his children, Christopher Bice and Brandon Bice; sister, Cindy Williams and brother, Danny Ray Bice; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MISS JUDITH WYNELL (JUDY) LYDAY, age 73, of Rome, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2024, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Fort Payne, Alabama on July 16, 1950, to the late Edmond Taylor (T.) Lyday and Lois Cash Lyday. Miss Lyday was a graduate of Chattooga High School and received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from University of West Georgia; afterward had a career with Georgia DFACS, where she dedicated her life helping the elderly.

Surviving are aunts, Clara Bozemen and Martha Hulgan; several First Cousins, several Special Friends including “Little Gril” Emily Self.

CALDWELL

 Mrs. Louise Brady Caldwell passed peacefully on May 22, 2024.  Mrs. Louise was Christian by faith and a member of the Perennial Baptist Church.  A dedicated wife, mother, sibling, and small-town philanthropist. She loved family, friends, and the area of Lyerly, Georgia where she was born, lived and worked her entire life.  Before retirement she was a lifelong seamstress and co-owner of Lyerly House of Fabrics.  Known locally as ‘The Fabric Lady’.  Mrs. Louise taught sewing to beginning homemakers and frequently would anonymously stitch baby clothing, prom dresses, dolls and other garments for the benefit of those in need or those without her sewing expertise.  She donated the Old Town Hall building to be used as for the future Lyerly Community Center.  She also donated several acres of land to expand the town park to approximately double the original size.


Mrs. Caldwell was born September 10,1929, the eldest of seven children. She was preceded in death by her parents; Michael Chele and Annie Belle Ragland Brady, husband Hill, daughter Rose Anne Woodall, and siblings Katherine, Andrew, and Jo Anne.  Surviving are her son, Michael Caldwell (Peggy); sisters, Evelyn Rinehart (Ralph) and Barbara Everett (Clint); brother, Harry Brady (Carol) and former son in law, Lamar Woodall; Grandsons, Christopher Woodall (Tina), Matthew Caldwell (Kathryn), Errynn Woodall (Jessica), Brent Caldwell (Meghan), and Kyle Caldwell (Mary Beth); Eight great grandchildren plus numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.  Special recognition is extended to her nephew Robert (Robby) Allen who lovingly cared for his Aunt Louise for many years!  Appreciation from the family to Mrs. Peggy Cordell who served as caregiver and a special friend.

A memorial celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 10 AM (EDT), from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Reverend Alton Stamey officiating and special comments from Paster John Mann. MR. JERRY LEE STRICKLAND, SR., age 86, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday evening, May 23, 2023, in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He was born in Thomaston, Georgia to the late Wilson Lee and Lucille Robinson Strickland, on July 6, 1937. Mr. Strickland was a member of the Menlo First Baptist Church, a Veteran of the U. S. Navy, and was a retired store clerk for the Pure Stop. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Martha Wofford Strickland in 2015, sisters & spouse, Evelyn and Horace Williams and Bernice Walters two brothers the late Ernie L. Strickland and Joseph Lamar Strickland.

Surviving, step son, Kevin and Dana Baker; grandchildren, Blake Baker, Haley Baker, Kyle Baker; special friends, Dana Hughes, Louis Parrill, and Simon Parrill; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

APPELBAUM

Arthur Frank Appelbaum, 82, of Homosassa, FL, passed away at home on May 15, 2024, after an extended illness. He was born in Baltimore, MD, on August 3, 1941, the son of the late Bennie and Mollie Appelbaum. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Arlene, whom he met while completing his Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education at the State University of New York at New Paltz. In addition to Arlene, Arty is survived by his son, Dr. Jeff (Karen) Appelbaum, of Trion, GA, and his daughter, Amy (Mike) Mihalchik, of Poughkeepsie, NY, as well as grandchildren, Max and Brooke Appelbaum and Sydney Mihalchik. He is also survived by his sisters, Linda (Bob) Glickstein and Phyllis (Jerry) Stein; nephews and niece Steven (Anne) Glickstein, Daniel (Toni) Glickstein, Michelle (Cary) Berman, Jason (Bethany) Stein, and several great nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who supported his family unfailingly and took great pride in them, attending as many milestone events as travel allowed.

After completing his degree at SUNY New Paltz, Arty became a teacher in the Chappaqua Central School District, where he taught all grades of elementary school during his 37-year career at Roaring Brook Elementary School. He spent the majority of his years teaching first grade, because he loved watching the growth of his students during the year, and he impacted the lives and futures of hundreds of children in his nurturing classroom environment. In addition, he served as the New York State United Teachers chapter treasurer for many years, while also working as the Sunday School Superintendent at Temple Beth-am in Yorktown Heights, NY. Arty retired from teaching in 1999, and in 2000 he and Arlene moved to Homosassa, FL, where they became involved in the leadership of the Nature Coast Orchid Society, made many close friends, and participated in several community activities.

A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, May 20 at Macrini-Wilder Funeral Home in Homosassa, Florida, with interment at West Hill Cemetery in Trion, GA On May 25 at 11am.

HAMBY

MR. EDWIN HILL HAMBY, age 91, passed away Monday, May 13th, 2024, at his Beavers Road residence in Summerville, Georgia. Mr. Hamby was born in Summerville, Georgia on September 29th, 1932, to the late Hugh Lee and Margaret Wofford Hamby. In addition to parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, the late Hughbelle Tucker, Joyce Hogg, Peg Tate Hogg, Margaret Thomas, Nelle Adamson; and grandson Luke Grogan. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Frances Lucille Hamby; daughters, Fonda (Dwight) Morgan, Sonya (Ronnie) Dixon, Kim (Tim) Grogan; sister, Jane Stokes; brother, Jerry Hamby; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

With faith in Christ, he was thankful for all the blessings of life. One of his greatest delights was his family. He was a loving and caring husband. He was a hard worker, sometimes working two jobs to provide for his wife and children. He loved when all his family was together, celebrating special events, and making his legendary waffles for breakfast. He loved farming, gardening, sitting on his front porch, fishing, planting flowers, collecting farm primitives, and racing cars. Notably, his favorite cars were his '50 Mercury and his '65 GTO. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War, member of the Summerville First United Methodist Church, and retired Terminal Manager for Mason & Dixon Trucklines.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 17th, at 4:00 P.M. from The Chapel At Camp Hamby, with Rev. David Autry and Rev. John Wesley Privett officiating, interment in Garrett Cemetery. MRS. RHONDA GAIL WADE, age 75, of Dogwood Drive, Trion, Georgia passed away Sunday, May 12, 2024, at her residence.  She was born in LaFayette, Georgia, to the late Ernie M. and Edna H. Owensby Anderson, on June 24, 1948. Mrs. Wade attended the Lookout Hall Church of Christ, and was retired from the Winding Department for Color Spectrum.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Steven A. Wade, to whom she was married on December 22, 1968; and brother the late Richard Wayne (Bud) Anderson.

Surviving are her son and spouse, Mike and Wendy Wade; sister and spouse, Elizabeth and Leon Williams; brother and spouse, Ken and Freda Anderson; granddaughter, Autumn Wade.

MR. JERRY THOMAS WRIGHT, age 84, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday, May 6, 2024 in a Rome hospital. Mr. Wright was born in Cedartown, Georgia, July 31, 1939, son of the late Jay Wright and Mozelle Collins Wright. He worked in Chemical Sales for many years before his retirement in 2004. Mr. Wright was a member of the National Guard and Baptist by faith. In addition to his Parents, He was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Bowen; granddaughter, Ashley Wright; and step child, Kimberly Rochester.

Surviving are his wife, Annette Vanpelt Wright; children, Scott Wright (Candi), Christy Baker (Jeff), Brent Wright (Nancy); grandchildren, Tiffany Payton (Craig), Brittany Mathis (Josh), Bre Merrell (Wayne), Christopher Wright, Cody Baker, Jack Wright, T. MRS. KATHRYN BRADY RAY, age 92, of Cartersville, Georgia formerly of Chattooga County, Georgia, passed away April 16, 2024, in Tucker, Georgia. She was born on August 8, 1931 in Georgia to the late Michael Chele Brady and Annie Bell Ragland Brady.

Mrs. Brown was born in Trion, Georgia on August 11, 1956, a daughter of the late Robert A. Johnson, Sr. and Clara L. Smith Johnson. She was a member of the Church of Christ, a retired mental health technician, and in addition to Parents was preceded in death by siblings Charlotte Todd, Terry Lee Johnson, Sr., and Robert Alvin Johnson, Jr.

Surviving are daughter, April Brown; son, David Jordan; sister, Jackie Cain; brother, Tony Johnson; grandsons, Ashton Jordan, Kaindon Jordan, Noah Jordan, and Jonah Jordan; several Nieces and Nephews.

STOKER

MR. JIM BERRY STOKER, age 91, of Scoggins Trail, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2024, at his residence. Mr. Stoker was born at Cloudland, Georgia on November 5, 1932, a son of the late Henry and Mammie Moses Stoker. He was retired from ABS Tracks Company, in addition to Parents was preceded in death by his wife the late Pat White Stoker and several Siblings.

Surviving are sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Robert Whitworth; nieces, Robin & Glenn Miller, Tammy & Elliott Norton, Kathy & Charles Ratledge; nephews, Jayson & Amy Whitworth, Lee Stoker, Larry & Johnie Stoker, Mark & Debbie Stoker, Greg & Sherry Stoker; step children, Monette & Jerry Crabtree, Charlene & Tony Wigley, Phil & Mary Ann Gurley.

RAMSEY

Naomi Faye Elsberry Ramsey, 81, of Lyerly, passed away on April 18, 2024 at her home.

Faye was born on December 28, 1942 to Annie Bell Kellett and Glen Elsberry.

In 1961, Faye married William “Bill” Ramsey. Faye and Bill went on to have three children, Chrysan, Jeff and Holland. Faye was the bookkeeper for Bill’s construction business, Bill Ramsey, Inc. She was a homemaker and later a paraprofessional at Chattooga High School. She was a member of Lyerly First Baptist Church.

Faye was predeceased in death by her husband William David “Bill” Ramsey, her siblings Sewell Glen Elsberry, Annie Ruth Sweatman, Roy “RC” Elsberry, Edwin “Ed” Dobbs Elsberry, James Elsberry, Robert “Bob” Elsberry and Charles Elsberry.

Survivors include her siblings Sarah Duke and Bill Elsberry; her daughter Chrysan (Lanny) Thomas; her sons Jeff (Kasey) Ramsey and William Holland Ramsey; her six grandchildren Chaz (Karanda) Thomas, Ramsey (Rebecca) Thomas, Austin (Samantha) Ramsey, Christian (Lindsey) Thomas, Isaac (Cassie) Thomas and Kerrigan (Matthew) Moore; and 7 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home on April 21, 2024 at 1:00 to 3:00 PM. A service will be held at 3:00PM with Rev. James Baird officiating. Active pallbearers will be Chaz Thomas, Ramsey Thomas, Austin Ramsey, Christian Thomas, Isaac Thomas, and Kerrigan Ramsey Moore.

In addition to flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Center For Hope 145 Catoosa Circle Ringgold, Georgia 30736, an organization Faye felt strongly about that focuses on mental health.

MISS TIFFANY PAGE WHITE, age 23, of Given Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly April 3, 2024. Miss White was born in Rome, Georgia on September 15, 2000, a daughter of the late James Neil White and Tracey Leona Dennis White. She graduated from Chattooga High School and was employed at Ingles Super Market in Summerville.

Surviving are sister, Chastity Nicole White of Trion and brother, Ricky Ray Gupton of Rossville.

A Celebration of Life for Tiffany Page White will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024, in Dowdy Park with Pastor Gary Howell officiating. Attendees are encouraged to bring finger foods.

WOFFORD

MRS. VOLA MAE (NANA) WOFFORD, age 74, of Gaylesville, Alabama, passed away peacefully, with her loving husband, of 55 years by her side Saturday, April 13, 2024, after a long illness. Mrs. Wofford was born on October 3, 1949 in Loudon, Tennessee, a daughter to the late Homer J. and Minnie Simpson Johnson. She was Baptist by Faith and worked for many years in the glove mill industry before leaving to help care for her precious grandchildren. Mrs. Wofford was preceded in death by sisters the late Patricia England and Anna Rae Woodall, and brother, the late Hubert Lynn Johnson.

Surviving are Her husband, Jerry Wofford; daughter, Rhonda (Jeff) White of Gaylesville, Alabama; son-Stanley (Trish) Wofford of Summerville, Georgia; grandsons, , Damion Moore, Devin White, and Destiny White; granddaughters, Hope Wofford and Grace Wofford; Mrs. Wofford was also the great grandmother of Five; several Nieces and Nephews.

MITCHELL

Billy Wayne Mitchell, 71, of Rome, Georgia, passed away March 28, 2024. Born July 20, 1952 in Summerville, Georgia, He graduated in 1970 from Chattooga High School, later from Shorter College with an elementary education major, and then received his Masters Degree from Berry College. Billy taught lower elementary school, mostly second grade, for thirty years at Pennville Elementary School. He was active in the PTT at Pennville School, serving as Treasurer for 18 years; former President of the Chattooga Education Association, he was a GAE member for thirty years. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association in Chattooga County, a member of the Chattooga County Historical Society and enjoyed doing a great deal of family genealogical research. Billy served many years as Treasurer for the Oakdene Place Neighborhood Association, was on the Board of Directors of the Rome Area Heritage Foundation, and opened his home for several Tour of Homes events. He is preceded in death by parents, Donald and Lucille Whisenant Mitchell, brother, Rodney Mitchell, sister, Elaine Mitchell Ponder, nephew, Eddie Ponder, and many aunts and uncles.

Survived by life partner, of 51 years, Brentz Turner; niece, Cindy (Wayne) Albrecht, great niece, Jamie (Joe) Prince, great nephews Kiley (Jessica), and Isaac (Ashley), as well as Jared (Elisabeth) Peulausk-Ponder; great great niece, Ella Prince, great great nephews, Henry Prince, and Ethan Albrecht; sisters-in-law, Ann (Jim) Lynch, and Fran (Ron) Palmer; as well as many friends, neighbors, and extended family.

Celebration of life for Billy Wayne Mitchell was held Sunday, April 7th, at 3:00 P.M. from the Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Dr. Kenneth Norton, Caroline Jones, Maisha Ludy, and Jamie Prince speaking. MRS. VESTA STEPHENS HELTON, age 84, of Helton Drive, Summerville, Georgia, Berryton Community, passed away early Saturday morning, March 23, 2024, at her residence. A native of Berryton, She was born on September 16, 1939 to the late G. W. and Catherine Magdalene Nelson Stephens. Mrs. Helton was retired lab tech for Best Mfg. Company and a member of North Summerville Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother the late Doug Stephens.

Surviving are husband, Harold Lee Helton; daughters, Cheryl Farrar (Brent Williamson) and Stephanie Helton (Jeff Dotson); granddaughter, Jennifer Turner; great grandchildren, Stella Turner, Annabelle Turner, and Vivian Turner; brother, Bruce (Ruth) Stephens; sister-in-law, Barbara Stephens; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. JAMES PATRICK (PAT) GAINES, age 66, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Monday, March 11, 2024, in the local nursing home. Mr. Gaines was born May 1, 1957 in Summerville, Georgia to the late Joe B. and Martha Bartlett Gaines. He graduated from Chattooga High School Class of 1975, attended Jacksonville State University and was a member of the JSU Marching Southerners from 1976 and 1977. Pat was Baptist by Faith, was an ordained Deacon, and actively attended church until His illness. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by brothers-in-law Alan Dean and Nelson Wilson.

Surviving are His wife, Karen Dean Gaines; son, Ethan Gaines; sister, Brenda Gail Wilson; special sister, Cece Laney; special brother, Andy Hutchins; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. WILLIAM DAVID FORD, age 75, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday evening, March 6, 2024, in a Rome hospital. A native of Trion, Georgia, He was born to the late William O. and Mildred Moore Ford, on October 5, 1948. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife, the late Diane Gorman Ford, and a sister, the late Sarah Jane Ford. He was a Volunteer Fireman from 1982 until 1993, City of Summerville Fireman for 32 years, and has served as City of Summerville Councilman from 2011 until present; He was a Veteran of Viet Nam serving in the U. S. Marines Corps.

Surviving are several Cousins and His City of Summerville Family.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 10th, at 1:30 p.m. from the J. D. Mrs. Helen Frances Canady Odom passed peacefully hand in hand with her husband, Howard, of 68 years at her residence on March 7, 2024. Mrs. Helen was Christian by faith and a faithful member/pastor's wife of the Trinity Baptist Church, a long time child care giver of hundreds of children. She touched the life of so many children and families. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, cook and care giver. She was born in Marshal County Albertville, Alabama to the late Alvin and Irene Cannady. She was one of ten children surviving of the ten include Verlon Cannady and Linda Cannady. She is preceded in Death by her mother Irene (Hollis) Cannady and the Late Alvin Cannady and Son in law Ricky Croy, along with several brothers and sisters. 

 Surviving are her Daughter Wanda Croy (Rickey Biddle) and Sons Brother Mike (Phyllis) Odom and Steve (Karen) Odom. Grandchildren Jeremy (Julie) Croy, April Odom, Nathan (Katie) Odom, Hannah (Eddie) Millican, Matthew Odom, Dustin Blackwell, Jacob Odom. PONDER

Henderson Frank Ponder, 96, passed away on February 22, 2024. He was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church and one of the oldest members of National Tax Associates of Tax Accounts and has carried on a full time practice in that profession since 1953.

He served in the European Theater during the latter days of WWII, re-enlisted for a second tour of duty in late 1945 and transferred to Graves Registration where he served as an investigator with the duty of tracking MIAs throughout Western Europe and parts of North Africa.

During his long life he created and managed a number of corporations and businesses. He was also an inventor and had acquired 5 patents. He loved to pilot his small plane, sail his boats.

He is survived by his two daughters, Claudette (and Jerry) Mahan, of Moultrie, GA and Jenette Slay of Wilsonville, Al., five grandchildren, Jeremy Mahan of Conway, AR, Terry Mahan (and Mary Ann) of Tallahassee, FL, Reiner Slay (and Lauren) of Marietta, GA, Bragan White-Mikle (and Daniel) of Acworth, GA, and Kilie Tatum (and Jack III) of Wilsonville, Al. and eight great grandchildren. He was married for 65 years to Mary Frances Gilmer.

The family had a private service on Monday, Feb.26.

MR. EDGAR LEE (ED) DAVIS, aged 94, of Back Berryton Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Saturday evening, February 24, 2024, in a Rome hospital. Born in Trion, Georgia on July 3, 1929, He was a son of the late Sam and Lillie Harris Davis. A member of the West Berryton Faith Temple and was retired boiler operator for Bigelow-Sanford Mill. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by His wife the Late Mary Etta Hix Davis, sons, the late Ray Davis and Donnie Lee Davis; siblings, the late Fannie Blackmon, Lillie Mae Hines, Naudie Lee Hines, John Henry Davis, Earnest Davis, and Willis Davis.

Surviving are daughter, Joyce (Wayne) Pritchett; son, Butch (Elvia) Berry; Ten Grandchildren, Thirteen Great Grandchildren, Five Great Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Carolyn V. Yates - October 10, 1938 – February 13, 2024

Carolyn V. Yates, age 85 of Trion, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 13. Carolyn was born in Trion on October 10, 1938, daughter of the late Wallace and Christine Clanton. She was married to her high school sweetheart George for 58 years.
 
Carolyn was a proud 1957 graduate of Trion High School. She retired from Mt. Vernon Mills in 1999 after 29 years of service. She received the Riegel Textile Zero Defects Award as a weaver in 1987 and several perfect attendance awards. She enjoyed planning Weave Room Reunions and visiting with her work friends. One of her favorite hobbies was photography. The love Carolyn had for her family and friends can be seen in the many photos she took. If she was around with her camera, you could be sure your picture would be taken and she would share a copy of it with you later. She also loved to cook for her family and was known for her fried chicken, cube steak, and biscuits. She loved to read her Bible, and her favorite song was “Sweet Beulah Land”. Carolyn was a member of Trion First Baptist Church.

Carolyn is survived by her sister Barbara Whittle and husband Lydell; her children Wallace
and Shirl Yates, Lisa and Fred Harris, and Anthony and Jackie Yates; her grandchildren
Stephen Harris, George and Carrie Yates, Kayleigh Yates, and Heather and Thad King; her
great-grandchildren Wyatt, Cole, Carter, Liam, and Baylor Yates, and Cydney King; her
special friend Ann Lanier; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was
preceded in death by her husband George and her granddaughter Jessica Yates.

Memorial service will be held Friday, February 23 at 12:00 pm in the J.D. Hill Memorial
Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville, GA, with visitation beginning at
11:00am. In lieu of flowers, Carolyn requested that memorial donations be sent to Trion First
Baptist Church, 95 Church St, Trion, GA 30753.

Care of Summerville for many years of kind and professional care. They also thank the

BARBEE

William Hugh Barbee. . . . .

William Hugh (Bill) Barbee passed away unexpectedly on February 10th, 2024 in Gainesville, Georgia. Bill was just 34 years old. 

Bill was born April 3rd, 1989 in Hammond, Indiana to the late Ms. Sue Johnson and the late Mr. J.B. Barbee. He lived his early years in Indiana before moving to Georgia at the age of 3. He attended Chattooga County High School.

Bill was full of energy and lived life to the fullest. He never met a stranger, and truly loved people from all walks of life. Bill’s greatest joy in life was being the dad of three amazing, beautiful children: Jadon (13), Braydon (11), and Avery Cate (8). He enjoyed his time with them immensely, and was extremely proud of the people they are becoming. Bill was also a very giving person, even to the point of death, donating his organs so that others may live.

Bill was the youngest of 10 siblings, with 5 sisters and 4 brothers. Siblings include: Jacqueline Barbee, the late Deborah Barbee Peace, Michael (Dee) Barbee, Steve Barbee, Candace (Dennis) Brown, Natasha (Jason) Judge, Branden Riner, Natalie Johnson, and James (Danielle) Barbee. He had countless nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services are being provided by Rainwater Funeral Home in Summerville. The funeral is at 4pm on February 24th, with visitation from 3pm to 4pm. MR. HAROLD DEAN (CHUCK) DIGSBY, JR., age 67, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday evening, February 8, 2024, in the local nursing home. Mr. Digsby was born in Rome, Georgia on March 26, 1956 to the late Harold Dean Digsby, Sr. and Wanda Faye Copeland Digsby. Mr. Digsby was a retired carpenter.

Surviving are, former wife and care giver-Angela Green Digsby; daughters, Chelsea Digsby of Atlanta, Shawn Alexander of Panama City Beach, Fl., and Angela Alexander Crawley of Panama City Beach, Fl.; step daughters, Ashley Carr of Knoxville, TN. and Kasey Woody of Summerville; sisters, Cyndi Simmons and Tamara (Rob) Harris; Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews.

MR. CHARLES H. HENSLEY, age 83, of 11th Street, Trion, Georgia, passed away Monday afternoon, February 5, 2024, in a Rome rest home. A native of Trion, Georgia, Mr. Hensley was born to the late Howard and Louise Lucille Landers Hensley, on July 13, 1940. He was a member of Central Avenue Baptist Church and was retired Roper, Inc. security guard.

Surviving are care giver, Virginia Lively; step daughters, Darlene Scoggins and Bonnie Hollingsworth; granddaughter, Raven (Matt) Rosson; great grandchildren, Saige Rosson and Brystal Rosson.

He was born in Rome, Georgia May 29, 1962, son of the late Roy and Betty Jean Owings. Jeff retired from Chattooga High School after 30 years of service as a Welding Instructor. He was Baptist by faith and a life-long member of pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are his Wife and love of his life, Lisa Randall Owings; Son, Sage Owings; Daughter, Haley Brooke (Andrew) Johnson; Granddaughter, Blaire; Brother, Jack (Tammy) Owings; Several Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Special Friends.

MR. FRANK GEORGE REED, age 96, of West Spring Creek Road, Trion, Georgia, passed away Friday evening, January 26, 2024, in a Rome hospital. Born in Chattooga County, Georgia on April 26, 1927, He was a son of the late Charles Wilburn and Lucille Teems Reed Smith. Mr. Reed was a member of West Berryton Faith Temple, retired from the spinning room of Riegel Textile corporation; in addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by wife, the late Ruby Lucille Blackmon Reed; step father, Jessie (Coon) Smith; and siblings, Jessie Mae Willingham, Frances Maton, Charlotte Reynolds, Dan Smith, Charles Smith, Wayne Smith, Arnold Smith.

Surviving are daughter, Mickie (James) Wilson; son, Max (Pat) Reed; granddaughter, Ashton (Jo) Burrage; grandsons, Jacob (Miranda) Reed, Jack Lively, Robert (Michelle) Lively; great grandchildren, Zeke Burrage, Jeremiah Reed, Amelia Reed, Micah Lively, Zach (Lauren) Lively, Emma Lively, Ian Lively; great great grandchildren, Halle Lively, Dana Lee Lively, Bristol Lively, Blair Lively, Janna Lively, and Jake Lively; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

A native Chattooga Countian, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth Edward Bates, Sr. and Mary Ruth Bing Bates. Kay was a homemaker. MRS. BETTY LOU (HONEY) RAMEY, age 85, of Silver Hill Road, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday morning, January 17, 2024, in a Rome hospital, following a brief illness. She was born in Summerville, Georgia on May 6, 1938 to the late Arthur Buster and Mary Etta Eleam Teems. Mrs. Ramey attended the Silver Hill Baptist Church, enjoyed time with Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, and was very fond of any outdoor activity. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by husband the late William G. Ramey, grandson-Robert “Robby” William Ramey, Jr., daughter & spouse, Shirley & Glenn Watwood, son-in-law, Jerry Argo; sisters, Mildred Nichols, Margaret Corbin, Carolyn Culberson, Jewell Hall, Frances Brooks; and brothers, Junior Teems and Leon Teems.

MR. GLENN NASH DOWNES, age 85, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 16, 2024, in a Cartersville hospital. A native of Orlando, Florida, He was born on January 1, 1939, to the late Ransom Herbert Downes, Sr. and Juanita Blackwood Downes. Glenn previously was in the U. S. Marines Reserve, a retired Paramedic, EMT Instructor, Educator, and owner/manager of Downes & Daughters Properties. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by wife, the late Claire Downes, brothers, Donald Downes, Jr., and Ransom Downes, Jr., and a grandson, Evan Nash Young.

Surviving are daughters, Chrissie Downes, Laurel Downes Doster, and Cindy Young; sister, Jane Downes; bonus daughter, Caroline Camp Harris; honorary son, Randy Pierson; six Grandchildren and two Great Grandchildren.

WOODALL

Mr. Walton Benson Woodall, age 81 of Adairsville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2024. He was born in Summerville, Georgia, November 14, 1942, a son of the late William Arthur and Rhoda Lee McCullough Woodall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, to whom he  married on February 24, 1967,  the late Anna Rea Johnson Woodall; sisters, Nola White, Emma Harrielson, Hattie Ruth Hammond, and brother, Johnny Woodall.  Benson served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the Purple Heart medal.  Mr. Woodall was a Truck Driver for David Smith Construction Company for several years.   He was Holiness by faith.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Rita (Lamon) Woodall Ware and son, Walton (Maria) Woodall II; sister,  Judy Westbrook; brother,  Jerry Mac Woodall; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 13th, at 2:00 p.m. from the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev.             Mr. L. Vernon Hayes, age 97 of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Monday, December 25, 2023 at his residence.  He was born in Chattooga County on May 26, 1926, son of the late E. Cidney Hayes and Sally Walton Hayes.  Mr. Hayes was owner and operator of Hayes Muffler Shop for many years before retirement and Baptist by faith.   In addition to parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the late Ruth Davenport Hayes; son, the late James V. Hayes and grandson, the late Matt Hayes.

 

            Surviving are his children, Thelma Hall and David McCullough, Kathy Jarrett and Mike Jarrett, Allen L. Hayes and Troyce Hayes; grandchildren, Jamie Rollins, Amanda Parker, Charlie Jarrett, Jeff Jarrett, Chris Jarrett, Jesse Hayes, and Lonnie Hayes; 14 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

 

            Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 28, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, with Rev. PRINCE

 Mr. Jerry Richard Prince, Sr., age 80, of Summerville, Georgia, died Monday, December 25, 2023 at his residence.  Mr. Prince was born October 29, 1943 in Summerville Georgia, son of the late Frank N. Prince, Sr. and Juanita Keith Prince.   He was a member of the Summerville United Methodist Church and served on several church boards.  The Prince Family owned and operated the Western Auto Associate Store in Summerville for over 40 years.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed by PFG Milton’s Food service in Oakwood, GA.  He loved boating with friends and woodworking.  He was preceded in death by his parents;  brothers, Frank N. Prince, Jr., and Ronald K. Prince;  two granddaughters, Erin Madison Prince and Jacklyn Elaine Allen.

 

            Survivors include his wife, Elaine Rollins Prince; son, Richard (Kristin) Prince; daughter, Martha (Bryant) Allen; son, John (Jennifer) Prince; grandchildren, J.R. (Angie) Prince, Lauren (Corey) Keith, Elizabeth Allen, Gracee Prince, Lora Prince, Nicholas Prince and four great grandchildren.

MR. ROLAND LEE BICE, SR., age 75, of Lily Lane, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Sunday evening, December 24, 2023, at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Bice was born on January 17, 1948, a son of the late Frank Bice, Sr. and Velma Mae Bundrum Bice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, the late Debbie Sue Colbert,  brothers, the late Frank Bice, Jr., Leonard Fay Bice, Richard Lamar Bice, and Terry Lee Bice. Mr. Bice was retired from the pulpwood industry and wood working.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Bice; children, Roland Bice, Jr., Ronald Bice, Janie Youngblood, and Mary Ann York; sister, Cindy Williams; brothers, Danny Ray Bice and Billy Joe Bice; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

     MRS. CAROLYN JEAN HURLEY, age 75, of Hunter Street, Summerville, Georgia, passed away Friday, December 22, 2023, at her residence.  She was born on August 16, 1948, a daughter of the late Henry Milton “Milt” Jones, Sr. and Foye R. Jones.  She was employed by Oakview Nursing & Rehab Center and Jim’s Restaurant for many years.  In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Billy Hurley, and brothers, the late Milton “J.R.” Jones and Billy Glenn Jones.

 

   Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Lynn Gorham & Adam Gorham; grandson & granddaughter-in-law, Vincent Hix and Emily Jones Hix; granddaughter, Kinsley Gorham & Brier Carter; grand fur babies, Quinn, Amora, Rosco, and Sadie.

MR. DONALD VERNON HOLT, age 86, of Jenkins Gap Road, Summerville, Georgia, Gore Community, passed away Sunday morning at His residence, following an illness. A native of Gore, Mr. Holt was born to the late James Thomas and Della Mae Allen Holt, on October 16, 1937; He was Baptist by Faith, a Farmer, and also worked in the carpet industry. In addition to Parents, He is preceded in death by a sister, the late Shirley Mae Maxey and brother and sister-in-law, the late James T. & Frances Maxey Holt.

Surviving are sister, Bobbie Jones; and great nephew, Landon Taylor; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MCLEOD

Margaret Dillard McLeod of Trion, Georgia, passed away December 3, 2023, at Oakview in Summerville. Born May 27, 1937, to Senior and Mattie Dillard of Trion, she was married for 66 years to her high school sweetheart Charles Arvel McLeod, Sr. A retired caseworker for Floyd County, Mrs. McLeod was a member of Trion United Methodist Church. She worked with the Trion Alumni Association for several years as treasurer. Her favorite part of her work with the Alumni Association was being able to send scholarship checks to Trion graduates because she believed so strongly in the value of education.

Mrs. McLeod is survived by her children Cynthia Anne McLeod (Don Highfield), Charles Arvel McLeod, Jr. (Lisa), and Keith Arlin McLeod. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles McLeod, Sr., and their son John Andrew McLeod (Cheryl).

Survivors include grandchildren Andrea McLeod (Victor), Lauren McLeod, Nicholas Van Pelt, and Kathleen Van Pelt Davis (Spencer) and great-grandchildren Kaedance, Ameri, and Andrew Van Pelt, Kai McLeod, Emmaline Gibson, Holder Davis, and Grady Davis, as well as nieces, nephews, and many cousins. The family wishes to thank the nurses and all the staff at Oakview Health and Rehabilitation. The care they provided during her stay in Memory Care and hospice was always kind and professional. The family also asks that in lieu of flowers, friends donate to the scholarship fund of the Trion Bulldog Alumni Association at PO Box 295, Trion, GA 30753.

 MRS. JANICE M. LUALLEN, age 75, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday evening, November 29, 2023, in a Rome hospital. She was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 17, 1948, a daughter of the late Roy T. and Alma Carter Bryant; she was a Homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, the late Barbara Bryant.

MR. DONALD LEE UPTAIN, age 61, of Leesburg, Alabama, formerly of Chattooga County, passed away Saturday morning, November 25, 2023, in a Rome hospital. He was born in Rome, Georgia on May 3, 1962, a son of the late Richard and Elizabeth Louise Rutledge Uptain. Mr. Uptain was retired supervisor for Mohawk Industries. In addition to Parents, He was preceded in death by a brother, the late Gary “Julio” Uptain and grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Rutledge.

Surviving are wife, Christy Uptain; sons Kevin Uptain (Kristy Kincade), Wesley Uptain, and Joseph Uptain; daughter, Tasha Corntassle; sister Melanie Wooten; several Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews.

MR. C. S. “STEVE” BAKER, owner of Prime Realty, Summerville, Georgia, passed away November 23, 2023 and has gone to be with his parents, Carl Cameron and Hazel Hankins Baker, Aunt Helen and Uncle Paul Arden, and special friends Jack Allen and Gary McConnell.

D. and Frances Armstrong Barksdale. She was employed as a Nursing Aid for Oakview Nursing and Rehab and a member of Berryton Bible Mission. In addition to her parents, was preceded in death by husband, the late John Haygood, Jr. and son, the late Michael Haygood.

Surviving are her daughters, Tina Pickle and Tyra Bennett; sons, Gerald Haygood, Keith Haygood and Scott Haygood; sister, Sandra Ivey; brother, Rev. Charles Barksdale; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

WILSON

  MR. NELSON LEE WILSONage 73, passed away Saturday evening, November 18, 2023, in a Chattanooga Hospital.  He was born to Warner Edwin and Edith Nancy Wales Wilson on July 9, 1950 at Dr. Lawrence’s Clinic in Menlo, Georgia.  He was named after both his Grandfathers. He always said he had a wonderful childhood growing up in the Menlo area.  Mr. Wilson was very artistic, with a talent for music and artwork.  He really loved to sing every chance available. Nelson met Brenda on a Sunday, when he went to her church to visit.  The lasting memory of him working his way down to the front and Brenda looking over her songbook at him, was reminisced quite often.  It was love at first sight and they married in that church on July 15, 1972 and celebrated a wonderful and happy 51 years together.  They had a big and loving family and all the kids loved him.  He was always doing fun things with them, taking them to the park, pool, & etc.  He was always very good at telling jokes; his many nieces and nephews remember him being so much fun.  Nelson served eight years in the Army Reserves with the 209th Communications Unit.  He worked a short time with Double A Radio in Cedartown, GA.  He started with Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph in 1972; eventually retired from the State of Georgia Department of Public Safety, where he worked as license examiner, GA. State Patrol dispatcher, and weight station examiner. He was a member of New Antioch Baptist Church.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sister, the late Nancy Wilson Smith, brother-in-law Bobby McDaniel, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe B. and Martha Gaines, grandsons, Brendon and Preston Adams, great granddaughter, Joselyn Phibbs and niece, Amber McDaniel.

 

            Survived by loving wife, Brenda Gaines Wilson; daughters and spouses, Cynthia and Nick Swords and April and Derek Adams; grandchildren Kayla (Lance), Caitlin (Jamison), Aleigha, and Scottie Satterfield, and Dylan and Levi Adams; great grandchildren, Lilah Gazaway, Parker and Paxton Phibbs; sister, Sheryl Wilson McDaniel; brother, Edwin and Martha Wilson; brother-in-law, Lawrence Smith; brother-in-law and spouse, Pat and Karen Gaines; several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins.

 

            Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 26th, at 2:30 p.m. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Harold Helton and Rev. Dewayne Teague officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery.  Active Pallbearers, Levi Adams, Dylan Adams, Scottie Satterfield, Ethan Gaines, Jeffrey Wilson, and Chandler Ammons.  Honorary Pallbearers, members of New Antioch Baptist Church, all former co-workers of the Georgia Department  of Public Safety.  The family will receive friends Sunday, November 26th, from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
