GARNER

MRS. BETTY HYDEN GARNER, age 84, of Trion, Georgia passed away Wednesday (December 30, 2009) in a Rome hospital. A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born in Trion on December 30, 1925 to the late George D. and Grace Lee McBride Erwin. Mrs. Garner was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church, a homemaker, former Nurse, and for several years an entrepreneur. She was preceded in death by first husband Dr. William U. Hyden on February 4, 1987. Surviving are husband-Dr. James S. Garner; daughter & son-in-law-Deborah Lee Hyden Turner & John; son-William U. (Bill) Hyden, Jr.; grandchildren-Wil Hyden & Tisch Colcock of Okatie, S.C., Joseph & Christy Hyden of Port Orange, FL., Ross & Saisha Camp of Trion; great grandchildren-Alyssa Anne Hyden and Easton Avery Hyden Camp.; step children & grandchildren-Pope & Fran Jordan Family, Jim (deceased) & Cheryl Garner Family, John & Bobann Garner Family, Keith & Beth Tibboel Family. MR. HOWARD I. MILLER, age 62, of Avenue B-Rome, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009, in a Rome hospital following a sudden illness. Mr. Miller was born in Ft. Payne, Alabama on March 19, 1957 was a son of the late Ollie and Willie Wooten Miller. He was supervisor, retired, in food production and a member of High Rise Baptist Church.

Surviving are His wife-Nita Miller; daughters-Susan Miller of Summerville, Mary Helton of Okeechobee, FL., and Kandi Ferguson of Armuchee; step son-Russ Thompson of Dallas, GA.; sister-Pauline Sanchez of Cedar Bluff, AL; brothers-Jimmy Miller of Rome and G. W. Miller of Trion; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. JERRY LEE JOHNSON, age 65, of Atlanta, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009, in an Atlanta hospital. A native of Atlanta, Georgia He was born to the late Jack Lee and Beatrice Moore Johnson on October 6, 1944. Mr. Johnson was a Veteran of Viet Nam and was retired mechanic. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Syble Huskey Johnson on March 29, 2006.

Surviving are daughters-Kimberly Wright of Alabama, Rita Vaca of San Antonio, TX., Lita Johnson McBrayer, and Amber Johnson both of Atlanta; sister-Barbara Jackson of Hiram; brother-James Dean of Hiram; Ten Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. JAMES CLIFFORD HUSKEY, age 80, of Ralph Chamlee Drive-Menlo, Georgia passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009, morning in a Rome hospital. He was born in Walker County, Georgia on September 22, 1929, a son of the late John Calvin and Mae Bee Witt Huskey. He was a retired farmer.

Surviving are nephews-Charles Huskey and Bruce Huskey; cousins-Lorene Rogers and R.B. Huskey; several other Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins also survive.

MRS. MAUDIE MITCHELL, age 70 , of Tucker Lane, Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday (December 16, 2009) at her residence. A native Chattooga Countian she was born to the late Claude and Pearl Shaver Willingham on May 4, 1939 and was preceded in death by a daughter, the late Donna Tucker and a sister, the late Nell McGuire. Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and was retired from Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill.

Surviving are husband-Charles Mitchell; daughter-Shirley Waters of Rome; son-and daughter-in-law-Kenneth N. and Renita Tucker of Summerville; step daughter-Debbie Whaley of Summerville; sisters-Faye Tucker of Summerville and Farice Cavin of Chesterfield, AL.; brothers-Bud Willingham of Carrollton, Bob Willingham of Bryant, AL., and George Willingham of Summerville; grandchildren-Michelle Waters-Baty , Adam Waters, Kenneth Tucker, and Donavon Whaley; great granddaughter-Kaitlyn Baty; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. MARY JO WHITE, age 71, of Maddox Lake Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday morning at her residence following a brief illness. A native Chattooga countian She was born to the late William and Mae Wilder Harris on November 10, 1938. Mrs. White was retired retail sales manager and was preceded in death by her first husband the late L. M. Kirby.

Surviving are husband-Charles White; daughters-Mary Fowler and Phyllis Elrod both of Lyerly and Sandy Ball of Summerville; son-Phillip Kirby of Rome; step sons-Lowell White of Charlotte, N.C., Dale White of Cartersville, Roger White of LaFayette, and Nolan White of Summerville; twenty Grandchildren, twenty three Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be Sunday, (December 13, 2009) at 3:00 p.m. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Bro. MRS. BARBARA CAMPBELL BATES, age 57, of Hunter Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at her residence following an extended illness. A native of Trion, Georgia, She was born to the late Paul M. and Bertha Parker Campbell on October 10, 1952. Mrs. Bates was a member of Ridgeway Baptist Church, secretary for Black & Meek Milling Company, and was preceded in death by Her husband the late Ed Bates.

Surviving are daughter-Alecia Bates; son-Chance Bates both of Summerville; step children-Randy Bates of Beaver Falls, PA., Debbie Terry of Chatsworth, Kenneth Bates, Jr. of Summerville, Lisa Knoles of Summerville, Marie Jackson of Trion, Becky Brown of Trion, Kay Bates of Trion, Joan Hathcock of Summerville, and Mary Kirby of Summerville; sister-Nancy Lang of LaFayette; brothers-William Campbell of Chickamauga, Glenn Campbell of Trion, and Harlan Campbell of San Diego, CA.; four very Special Nieces; and a host of special relatives.

MRS. THELMA MARGARET GUINN, age 88, of Burton Road-Trion, Georgia passed away Monday at Her residence. A native Chattooga Countian, She was born on June 23, 1921 to the late George Franklin and Lizzie Louella Skates Baggett. Mrs. Guinn was a member of the Mt. View Baptist Church, retired from the spinning room of Mt. Vernon Mills, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Rev. Archie Edward Guinn; sisters-Katie Baggett and Lemmus Dearing, and a brother-George Baggett.

Surviving are daughters-Bonnie Chandler, Lisa Stewart both of Trion, Sally Benton of Loganville, and Louise Osborne of Cave Spring; sister-Evelyn Lemming of Trion; several Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces , and Nephews also survive.

MR. TARRY L. DUPREE, age 50, of Dupree Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Monday (November 30, 2009) in a Rome hospital. Born on March 13, 1959 he was a son of the late Edna Marie Dupree. Mr. Dupree was a former employee of the Sanitation Department of the Town of Trion.

Surviving are His wife of 27 years-Barbara Locklear Dupree; sons-Erik Dupree and Adam Dupree; brother-Steven Dupree all of Summerville; Uncles- J. W. Dupree, Donnie Dupree, Delwyn Dupree all of Summerville; Aunt- Anita Green of Cloudland. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Bro. Ricky Harris officiating, interment in West Hill Cemetery. MONTINE SHACKELFORD JONES, age 101, of Gore, Georgia passed away at her residence on November 28, 2009. Daughter of George Orr and Cynthia Garner Shackelford. She was born August 21, 1908 in Wilcox County, Georgia where she was raised and schooled near Abbeville. As a young woman she and her family returned to their family home in Athens. She graduated from Georgia State Teachers College with a degree in home economics and began her teaching career in Brazelton, Georgia. She was recruited to come to Chattooga County in the 1930’s to teach at Gore School. Taking a break from teaching to start a family, she returned to teaching at Summerville Elementary School in 1956, and retired from the Chattooga County School System in 1976. She lived and died in the home her father-in-law and husband were born in. Her loves were her family, home, and the beauties of nature. She never met a flower she didn’t love. She was preceded in death by John S. Jones, her husband of 54 years, a brother, Will Shackelford of Abbeville, GA., and sisters Moina Lackey of Greenville,S.C., and Helen and Hazel Shackelford of Decatur, GA.

Surviving her are a son Sam Jones of Gore, GA., and son and daughter-in-law David and Shelli Jones also of Gore. Other survivors include nephews George and Grace Wiliamson of Jacksonville, FLA., Joe Hammond of Summerville, GA., Nieces Carolina and Jack Hammond of Abbeville, Sujette Taylor also of Abbeville, Bobbie and Bill Settles of Sanford, North Carolina, and caretakers Lois Mason, Sherry Carter, Evon Woods, and Amanda Driver.

MR. WILLIS SAMUEL JAMES, former Mayor of Summerville, Georgia and Chattooga County businessman, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday November 22, 2009, after a long illness. Born in Cobb County on October 17, 1913, Mr. James resided for most of his life in Chattooga County. His father, Cleland Columbus James moved to the area to establish the CCC Fish Hatchery in 1929. Willis James delivered fish all over the state of Georgia with his father. Mr. James graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with an engineering degree. His professional career included work in insurance and serving as manager of the Summerville Manufacturing Company for many years. He later worked with Roman Chemical Company. Mr. James was a member and former Elder of Summerville Presbyterian Church, and was involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents, Cleland Columbus and Annie Lou James, his brothers Herman, Edward, and Albert, his first wife Lola Beatty James, and their daughter, Martha Addie James Hagood.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary James; three grandsons, Gregory, Robert, and Richard Hagood, their father Dr. Felton Hagood, and several great grandchildren along with an extended step family.

Memorial services will be held at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home on Wednesday (November 25th), with visitation at 2 P.M. and the service at 3 P.M. Interment will follow in the Summerville Cemetery. Honorary Pallbearers Gregory Hagood, Dr. Robert Hagood, Richard Hagood, Joseph Winston McWhorter, Robert O. McWhorter, Hilary G. McWhorter, Dr. Felton Hagood, and Arch Farrar, Jr. . MR. F. H. (PETE) BONEY, age 94, of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, died Thursday, (November 19, 2009), in Brunswick, Georgia. He was born December 13, 1914, in Fitzgerald, GA. a son of the late L.W. and Emma Swinney Boney. He graduated from the University of Miami where he played fullback for the Hurricanes. He began a teaching and coaching career in Trion, GA in 1936. During WW II he served in the U.S. Navy and continued in the Reserves for 25 years, retiring as a Commander. After the war he graduated from Emory University Law School and in 1957 opened a law practice in Summerville, GA for some thirty years. During his career he was elected to one term as the Judge of City Court in Chattooga County. He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Brewer Boney, and their son, Peter L. Boney.

He is survived by a daughter, Marcia Boney of St. Simons Island; grandchildren and husbands, Belle and Link Baker, Lilburn, GA; Leigh and Dr. Jeff Baumbach, Dothan, AL and Ann and George Williams , Knoxville, TN; great grandchildren Virginia, Elizabeth, Will, and Mary Grant Baumbach; Emily, George, Cullen, Maggie, and Kate Williams and Brewer Baker.

Funeral services will be held Sunday (November 22nd) at 2:00 P.M. from the Summerville First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Hicks officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery. View Baptist Church and was preceded in death by a sister the late Katherine June Elrod on December 23, 2007

MR. BILLY WARREN HURLEY, SR., age 67, of Bargain Lane-Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (November 13, 2009) morning in a Rome hospital. Born in Cherokee County, Alabama on July 3, 1942 , a Son of the late Miles Irby and Ruby Mae Bagley Hurley. Mr. Hurley was a self employed carpenter.

MR. S. HARRIS CALDWELL, JR., age 71, of Villa Rica, Georgia passed away Saturday afternoon at his residence. A native of Cedartown, Georgia, He was born to the late S. Harris Caldwell, Sr. and Irene Long Caldwell on April 9, 1938. Mr. Caldwell operated the former Lowry’s Department Store for seventeen years, First Federal Savings & Loan, and was certified public accountant until retirement. He was preceded in death by wife the late Jane Lowry Caldwell on July 11, 1993.

Surviving are two daughters and spouses-Kim & John Dillon of Huntsville, AL. and Karen & Eddie Pittman of Villa Rica; son and spouse-Reed & Jennifer Caldwell of Lilburn; grandchildren-Joshua Dillon, Ashley Dillon, Casey Pittman, Stephanie Pittman, Connor Caldwell, & Ethan Caldwell; niece-Angela Marshall.

MRS. DOROTHY SLATER (DOT) GILLEY, age 80, of Penn Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday (November 1, 2009) morning at Her residence. A native of Dekalb County, Alabama, She was born to the late Hubert Milford and Nancy Elizabeth Mayfield Slater on May 9, 1929. Mrs. Gilley was a member of the Summerville First United Methodist Church, retired from B B & T Bank after 32 years of service, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Clarence Gorman Gilley on June 10, 1998.

Surviving are daughter & spouse-Carol & James R. Smith of Versailles, KY.; son & Spouse-Jeff and Lana Elizabeth Welch Gilley of Menlo; and sisters-Madge Fox of Menlo and Margaret Elrod of Arab, AL.; grandchildren-Ashley Dements Singleton, Andrea Caroline Singleton, John Porter Gilley, Samuel Cobb Gilley, and Thomas Houston Gilley; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. JOHN KENNETH (J.K.) RAMEY, age 98, of Chamblee, Georgia died October 27, 2009 in Cumming, Georgia. Native to Monroe, West Virginia He was born to the late Roy and Myrtle Lee Ramey on April 15, 1911. Mr. Ramey was owner and operator of Ramey Tire Company of Atlanta and was preceded in death by his wife the late Trilby Howard Ramey.

Surviving are sons-Romney (Patty) Ramey of Moreland, & Franz (Chip) Ramey (fiancée-Cindy Hunter) of Cumming; step sons-Nick Ramey of Decatur, & Mike Ramey of Warm Springs; Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, & Great Great Grandchildren also survive.

MR. BOB RUNYAN, age 77, of Givens Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Sunday (October 25, 2009) morning in a LaFayette health care. A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee He was born to the late Roscoe and Hassie Murphy Runyan on January 1, 1932. Mr. Runyan was a Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the U. S. Navy and retired from the carding department of Harriett-Henderson Mill. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Hazel Idell Monroe Runyan on January 3, 2009.

Surviving are daughter-Debra Ponder of Summerville; step son-Rodger Swanson of Fyffe, Alabama; grandchildren-Dustin & Elizabeth Ponder, Steven Swanson, Chris Swanson, and Marsha Swanson; 6 Great Grandchildren; sister-Jeanette Thomas of Chattanooga, TN.; Nieces and Nephews.

Mrs. Archibald A. (Emily Nixon) Farrar, Summerville, died on October 4, 2009 at her daughter’s home following a brief illness.
A descendant of pioneer families that settled in Floyd and Chattooga Counties in 1845, she was the daughter of Pennington Mason Nixon and Marian Dean Nixon. She was born July 25, 1922 and was preceded in death by her husband, Archibald A. Farrar, her parents, a brother, Pennington Mason Nixon, III and a sister, Challis Sydney Nixon.
Mrs. Farrar graduated from Rome Schools and attended the University of Georgia where she pledged Chi Omega Sorority. After college she cherished the few years she worked at the Georgia Power Company. She was a member of the Chattooga County Historical Society and Trion Presbyterian Church. She also served on the Board of the Summerville Cemetery Association.
Mrs. Farrar was affectionately known as “Miss Emily” to all of her students in the very first kindergarten started in Summerville in the 1950s. She taught Sunday School and was a substitute teacher for years in the Chattooga County School system. She had a love for history and genealogy and particularly enjoyed being the keeper of her family’s history in her own “History Room.” She was the person to consult on the issues of history relating to both Chattooga and Floyd Counties and she wrote the History of Chattooga County in 1962. An exceptional cook, she loved cooking and entertaining her family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, Archibald A. Farrar, Jr. and his wife, Nell, of Summerville and Robert Nixon Farrar of Nashville, Tennessee and one daughter, Janet Farrar Byington and her husband, Bill, of Rome. Also surviving are five grandchildren, John Pennington Farrar of Atlanta, Georgia, Challis Elizabeth Latta of Gainesville, Georgia, Katherine Gates Farrar of Rome, Emily Allgood Griffin of Rome and Mary Catherine Farrar of Athens, Georgia and two step grandchildren, Will Byington, III of Rome and Dr. Kelly Byington of St. Petersburg, Florida.
The family will hold a visitation at the residence of Mrs. Farrar at 164 Virginia Drive, Summerville, Georgia on Tuesday from 5-7 PM. A burial service will be held at Earl Rainwater Funeral Home on Wednesday at 3 PM with interment to follow at The Summerville Cemetery with the Reverend William Flannagan officiating.
The family requests no flowers but memorials may be sent to the Trion Presbyterian Church, 224 Park Avenue, Trion, Ga 30753 or an historical charity of your choice.
Pallbearers are: Butch Eleam, David Ford, Greg Thomas, Malcolm Lee, Robert McWhorter and Jason Winters. Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Duff and the Deacons and Elders of the Trion Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Lucile Waters Owens, age 89, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday morning (September 28, 2009) in LaFayette, Georgia. Born in Chattooga County, Georgia on January 16, 1920 she was a daughter of the late Oliver and Sally Mae Caldwell Waters and a member of South Summerville Baptist Church. Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her husband Hill Owens, three brothers: Lloyd Waters, Paul Waters and Jerry Waters and two sisters: Eula Hall and Sybil Deerman.

Surviving are two daughters: Thelma McDaniel of Rock Spring and Wilma Bybee of Lady Lake, FL; one son: Bruce Owens of Summerville; sister: Glenna Lawrence of Lake View, GA; brother: Donald Waters of Memphis, TN; Seven Grandchildren; Seven Great Grandchildren, and Four Great Great Grandchildren; Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday (September 30th) at 3:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. David Craven and Rev. MRS. LYNN LITTLE WOFFORD, age 48, of Woodstock, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, passed away Saturday, (September 26, 2009) in a Marietta hospital following a sudden attack. A native Chattooga Countian, Mrs. Wofford was born to Gordon H., Sr. and Bernice Grubbs Little on July 1, 1961. Lynn was a 1979 graduate of Chattooga High School and the 1992 graduating Class of Berry College. She was a member of Christ Community Church in Kennesaw where She was active in the Praise Team (singing and learning songs were Her passion). Mrs. Wofford was also active in the Church Mission Team & leading Women’s Covenant Groups; having gone on mission trips to Peru and Thailand. She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents-Dr. & Mrs. R. N. Little and maternal grandparents-Mr. & Mrs. Lamar Grubbs.

Surviving are Her husband, Phil Wofford; son-Adam Wofford of Macon; grandson-Patrick Wofford; Parents-Gordon H., Sr., & Bernice Little of Summerville; brother & sister-in-law-Gordon H. (Dan) Little, Jr. & Angela of Summerville.

MR. JOSEPH H. SCHILLING, Jr., age 67, of #50 Saratoga Way-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday (September 8, 2009) at His residence following an extended illness. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 4, 1942 to the late Joseph Henry Schilling, Sr. and Bertha Nedloff Schilling. Mr. Schilling was an independent Contractor.

MISS SHEILA ANN YATES, age 65, of Trion, Georgia, Welcome Hill Community, passed away Friday (September 4, 2009) in the local nursing home. A lifetime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia, she was born to the late Benjamin C. and Thelma Arwood Yates on October 8, 1943. She was a member of the Welcome Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are sister-Mabel Simpson of Sugar Hill, Georgia; brother-George Yates of Trion; several Nieces and Nephews; and a dear friend, Jessie Hill of Summerville.

A native of Chattooga County, Georgia She was born to the late Thurman David and Marlene Payne Barrett on March 3, 1929. Mrs. Lovingood was a retired Medical Lab Technician and a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class of the Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands’ the late Lee Gene McKenzie and the late Dr. Berlon Lovingood.

Surviving are daughters and sons-in-law-Gena & John S. MR. JAMES GRIFFIN SANDERS, age 58, of Rome, Georgia passed away Friday, August 28, 2008, from injuries received in an automobile accident near Lucedale, Mississippi. He was born to the late Foye K. and Rosa Lee Norwood Sanders on November 22, 1950 in Gaston County, North Carolina. Mr. Sanders was a Professional Photographer and was preceded in death by a son, the late Benjamin Sanders and a sister, the late Juanita Sanders Wall.

A native of Dekalb County, Alabama She was born on July 25, 1913 to the late William Henry and Emily Ida Biddle Keith. Mrs. Bearden was a member of North Summerville Baptist Church and retired from retail sales. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Millard Vernon Bearden.

MR. JAMES R. JOHNSON, age 66, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday (July 24, 2009) evening. He was born on December 27, 1942 to the late James Bethel Johnson and Essie Lee Hale Parker. Mr. Johnson was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church and for several years was a law enforcement officer for the Atlanta Police Department, City of Summerville, Chattooga County Sheriff’s office, Trion Police Department, and LaFayette Police Department; later was a truck driver before retirement. He was preceded in death by a son the late James Allen Johnson on June 19, 2000.

Surviving are grandsons-James Anthony Johnson and Joseph Dennis Johnson; sisters-Virginia Gordy of Gaylesville, AL., Shelia Cothran, Joanna Thoreson, and Lynda Carroll all of Summerville; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. JOE GANNON, age 84, of Shields Road, (Subligna Community) Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday (July 23, 2009) at his residence. A native of Saint Joseph, Missouri Mr. Gannon was born February 5, 1925 to the late Donald G. and Frances Wolf Boyer, and was raised in Chicago, Illinois by his adopted mother-Grace Estelle Gannon. He was retired from the ground crew of Transworld Airlines and a member of Horizon Baptist Fellowship.

Surviving are his wife-Ruby Hayes Jennings Dodd Gannon; step-children-Karen and the late Rusty Bridges, Kenneth and Debbie Jennings, Allene and Doug Spain, Laura and Paul Lee, and Earlene and Glenn Moore; 14 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren; sister-Virginia Hoffmaster; several cousins.

MS. MARY RACHEL CANTRELL, age 85, of Tavern Lane-Trion, Georgia passed away Wednesday (July 1, 2009) at her residence following an extended illness. A native of Atlanta, Georgia She was born to the late Robert Dennis and Carrie Wills Cantrell on September 12, 1923. Ms. Cantrell was a member of the Acworth First United Methodist Church and was retired Industrial Engineer for Georgia Power Company.

Surviving are sisters and spouse-Alma McLemore of Marietta and Pansye and Wade Boggs of Ovieda, FL.; brother & spouse-Phil and Marlene Cantrell of Acworth; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. JAMES GRADY McCALMON, age 76 of River Haven Lane, Cloudland, GA, passed away Monday night (June 29, 2009) in a Rome hospital following an extended illness. A native of Bremen, Georgia He was born to the late George Grady and Mary Waddell McCalmon on April 28, 1933. Mr. McCalmon was a member and Elder of the Cloudland Presbyterian Church, a Veteran of Korea serving in the U. S. Army, and was the City Manager for the City of Summerville, Georgia. He was preceded in death by a sister the late Joyce McCalmon Stembridge.

Surviving are His wife-Nancy McCalmon; daughter & son-in-law-Michelle McCalmon O’Connor and Greg O’Connor of Cartersville; son & daughter-in-law-Greg and Camie McCalmon of Ringgold; grandchildren-Madison McCalmon, Lendon McCalmon, Preston McCalmon, Brennan McCalmon, Devin O’Connor, Megan O’Connor, Katie O’Connor, and Sara O’Connor; sister-Syble McCalmon Berglund of Austin, Texas; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. GERTHIE L. HAMPTON, age 72, of L.M. Thomas, Jr. Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday (June 24, 2009) in a Dalton, Georgia hospital following a sudden attack. A native of Jackson County, Alabama She was born to the late George Alvin and Ethel Golf Cooper on December 6, 1936. Mrs. Hampton was a member of the Ark of Faith Holiness Church and was retired from the tufting department of Aladdin Carpet. She was predeceased by siblings Ruby Peterman, Billy Cooper, Leonard Cooper, and George Alvin Cooper and step son-James Paul Hampton.

Surviving are Her husband, James Hampton; son and daughter-in-law-James Leon and Vickie Ann Hampton of Summerville; sister-Emma McDonald; brothers-Raymond Cooper and James R. Cooper all of Summerville; grandchildren-James B. Hampton, Tabatha Hampton, and Christopher Hampton; four Great Grandchildren; five Nieces, nine Nephews, several Great Nieces and Great Nephews also survive.

MRS. FRANCIS JUNE PEPE, age 80, of Menlo, Georgia went to be with the LORD Wednesday (June 24, 2009) morning. A loving wife, mother, and aunt, She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Port Orange, FL. and attended the Menlo First Baptist Church. Mrs. Pepe was born in New Castle, PA. to the late Earl and Nettie Logan Chaffee on July 4, 1928. She was predeceased by sons-Joseph Earl Pepe &, Earl Frances Pepe; brother-Wayne Chaffee and sisters-Edith Stephenson and Beverly Harper.

Surviving are Her husband-Edward L. Pepe and daughter-Nettie Pepe Parham; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MR. WILLIAM H. (BILL) WILSON, age 88, of Bryant Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (June 17, 2009). A native of Walker County, Georgia He was born to the late William Carl and Myrtle Mae Purtain Wilson on January 2, 1921. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Summerville First United Methodist Church, a career Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in WW II and Korea, and was also retired Civil Service in the U. S. Department of Agriculture. He was a member of Chattooga Lodge #704 F & AM and the NAFR- Rome chapter. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by siblings the late Fannie Mae Lacy, the late Curtis Wilson, and the late John Henry Wilson.

Surviving are His wife-Odessa B. Lacy Wilson; sons & daughters-in-law-W. A. & Claudia Ann Wilson of Acworth and Thomas Harold & Jean McClain Wilson of Roswell; grandchildren-Nicole Kathleen Wilson, Thomas Andrew Wilson, and Jennifer Leigh Wilson; brother-James Wilson of Panama City Beach, FL.; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. JAMES L. (PAT) PLEDGER, Sr., age 70, of Ridgecrest Drive-Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday (June 11, 2009) evening in a Rome hospital following an extended illness. Born in Boaz, Alabama on August 14, 1938, a son of the late John Thomas and Bessie Turner Pledger. He was retired from auto body repair shop and bus driver. Mr. Pledger was member of West Summerville Baptist Church and Alpine Lodge #211 F & AM. He was preceded in death by a son the late Christopher Kyle Pledger on May 21, 2007.

Surviving are wife-Shirley Mosier Pledger; daughter & son-in-law-Patricia & Lee Colgrove; son & daughter-in-law-Jimmy & Julie Pledger all of Summerville; sisters & brothers-in-law-Betty and Jerry Johnson of Summerville, Gay and Gary Shaw of Lyerly; brothers & sisters-in-law-T. MR. BEN JOHNSON, SR., age 92, of Lake Wanda Rita Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday (June 2, 2009) in a LaFayette, Georgia nursing home. A native of Chattooga County, Georgia, He was born to the late George and Mary Millican Johnson on May 28, 1917. Mr. Johnson attended the Pennville Gospel Tabernacle, was a Veteran of WW II serving in the U. S. Navy, and was retired from the Georgia Glove Mill.

MS. LAURA ALLISON PULLEN, age 34, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday(June 1, 2009) afternoon in a Chattanooga, Tennessee hospital following a sudden illness. Ms. Pullen was born in Floyd County, Georgia on March 29, 1975. She graduated from Chattooga High School in 1993 and from the Medical College of Georgia in 1997; she was a Dental Hygienist. Ms. Pullen was a member of The Horizon Baptist Fellowship and was preceded in death by grandparents-the late Joe and Sera Pullen and the late Alfred Sherman.

MINISTER ROLAND ARTHUR WARREN, age 90, of Montezuma, Georgia passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his daughter’s, Ila King, residence in Summerville. Mr. Warren was born in Blount County, Alabama to the late John Henry and Delia Walker Warren on January 12, 1919. He was an Evangelist with the Church of Christ for more than fifty years and a member of the Oglethorp Church of Christ.

MRS. BETTY FAYES CASH McGINNIS, age 82, of Covington, Georgia formerly of Chattooga County, Georgia passed away Saturday (May 16, 2009) in Covington. She was born in Berryton, Georgia on July 18, 1926 a daughter of the late Alfred “Shorty” Cash and Arrie Lee Dendy Cash. A member of Honey Creek Baptist Church in Conyers, Georgia, Mrs. McGinnis was a secretary for many years for a property management company, and a proud member of the “Red Hat Society”. She was preceded in death by husband the late Charles Howard McGinnis, daughters the late Susan Slayton and Rhonda Walker, and a brother the late Jack Cash.

MR. ROBERT LeROY “RUSTY” BRIDGES, of Summerville, Georgia Subligna Community was called up on May 17, 2009 to play drums for God’s Praise and Worship team. Rusty was a former resident of Ooltewah, Tennessee and was retired from the Hamilton County County Highway Department. He was a longtime drummer for several bands in this area, a member of Ooltewah Lodge #741, and was preceded in death by parents the late Robert and Yvonne Russbridge Bridges.

A native of Cherokee County, Alabama She was born to the late Paul F. and Sibyl Preskitt Byars on November 25, 1917. She was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church, retired Justice of the Peace for Chattooga County, and was preceded in death by Her husband the late Henry Clarence Vaughn, Sr.; son, Henry Clarence Vaughn, Jr.; grandson, Scott Vaughn; great great grandson, Jordon Vaughn; sister, Haney Byars; brother, Robert L. Byars.

Mr. Wilson moved to Chattooga County at a early age, was educated in the Chattooga County schools, and along with His wife, the late Virginia Newsome Wilson, owned and operated Wilson Motor Company, the former Chrysler/Dodge dealership in Summerville for many years. He was a member of Northside Church of Christ and was preceded in death by His Wife; Parents; a daughter the late Brenda Wilson; siblings-the late Waylon Wilson, the late Juanita Wilson, and the late James Aubry Wilson, Jr.

MR. REGINALD RICHARD (REG) BOYLES, age 77, of Garden Lakes Blvd.-Rome, Georgia passed away Friday (May 8, 2009) in a Rome hospital. A native of Trion, Georgia He was born to the late Homer Lonnie and Jessie Williams Boyles on March 8, 1932. Mr. Boyles was a Veteran of Korea serving in the U.S. Air Force, was a retired accountant for General Electric, and a member of Horse Leg Creek Golf Club. He was preceded in death by sister-Katie Boyles Ashe and nephew-Richard Watson.

MRS. LAVADNA “SPUD” HILL, age 96, of Atlanta, former longtime resident of Chattooga County, Georgia passed away Friday morning in a Alpharetta, Georgia hospital. A native of Apison, Tennessee, Mrs. Hill born to the late Ailey H. and Carrie Cooper Hughes on March 11, 1913. First coming to Trion, Georgia in the 1930s’ She held several positions in the Riegel Textile Corporation at Trion , fore runner of Mt. Vernon Mills. In 1945 She and her late, Mr. J. D. Hill, established J. D. Hill Funeral Home in Summerville; Spud, later was Receptionist for Earle Rainwater Funeral Home until retiring due to ill health. She was a member of the Summerville First Baptist Church. Spud was preceded in death by her husband the late J. D. Hill; siblings-the late O.O. Hughes, C.C. Hughes, R.C. Hughes, Ava Viola Cannon, and Chasta Faye Webb.

Surviving are son-Jimmy Hill and daughter-in-law-Marci H. Hill,; granddaughter-Brittan Carrie Hill; step granddaughter-Kimberly Cox and step grandson-Chris Cox all of Sandy Springs, Georgia; several Nieces, Nephews, and Cousins also survive.

MR. MAYLON HOMER PURCELL, age 90, of Dry Valley Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Tuesday (April 14, 2009) morning in Cartersville, Georgia. A native of Ashland, Georgia He was born to the late Adolphus Homer and Maude Whitfield Purcell on February 14, 1919. Mr. Purcell a graduate of Cornelia High School received his Bachelors Degree in Agriculture from Habersham College and Masters Degree in Agronomy from the University of Georgia. He was a member of Summerville First United Methodist Church and for 30 years was the Co-operative Extension Agent for University of Georgia in Summerville. Mr. Purcell was Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II serving in the South Pacific

Surviving are wife-Macie Crow Purcell; daughters and son-in-law-Nancy Purcell Hyte of Atlanta,Kathy Purcell Floyd and Gary Floyd of Cartersville; sisters-Marion Purcell Anderson of Toccoa, GA.; brother-James Alfred Purcell of McKinsey, TN.; grandchildren-Jamie Woodward and Eric Brown, Noah Simpson Hyte, Rebekah Lois Hyte, Louis Jacob Hyte; step grandchildren-Jarrod Floyd and Anna Elaine Floyd; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. CHARLES KELLY LuALLEN, age 78, of Marshall Lane, Rome, Georgia, passed away Friday, (April 10, 2009), in a Rome hospital. A native of Chattooga County, He was born on February 19, 1931 to the late Willie and Josie Spain LuAllen. Prior to retirement, He worked in the sawmilling industry for a number of years.
Surviving are His wife-Brenda Wright LuAllen; son-Kevin LuAllen; daughters-Jackie LuAllen, Sheila LuAllen, and Skyla LuAllen; four grandchildren-Julie Loveless, Gary Matthews, Jason and Chris Wooten; eight Great Grandchildren; brothers-Larry LuAllen, Robert LuAllen, and LeRoy LuAllen; sisters-Eva Jo Pierce and Linda Pierce all of Summerville; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. LILLIE MAE SIZEMORE, age 75, of Back Penn Road-Summerville, Georgia passed away Monday (March 30, 2009) morning at the residence following an extended illness. A native of Ringgold, Georgia She was born to the late Robert Sherman and Delia Mae Vest Weaver on September 26, 1933. Mrs. Sizemore was a Homemaker, Baptist by Faith, and was preceded in death by husband-John Sizemore; two sons-Eddie Sizemore and Mike Sizemore and two sisters-Mary Ruth Osteen and Margaret Weaver.

DEVOTED DAUGHTER AND SISTER. . . . .

EXA OVELLE BROWN, 87 of 103 Norton Road-Summerville, Georgia died Thursday (March 19, 2009) in Rome at the home of her brother; she had been in declining health for the past year. Miss Brown was born in Chattooga County, Georgia on July 23, 1921, a daughter of the late Joseph and Lillie Grigsby Brown. In addition to parents She is preceded in death by four sisters-: Elsie Stephens Dixon, Sara Jo Brown, Dorothy Phillips Tucker, and Mildred Brown; nephew- Ricky Brown and niece- Deborah Brown Gooch.

Surviving are two brothers-Warren H. Brown of Doraville and James L. Brown of Rome; four nieces-Karen Brown McRae (Mrs. Duncan) of Duluth, Kathey Brown Johnson (Mrs. Tony) of Good Hope, Melodye Brown of Rome, and Linda Phillips Tinker (Mrs. Thom) of Trion.

Graveside services will be conducted Saturday (March 21st) at 2:00 P.M. at the family plot in the Summerville Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Howell officiating. MRS. WILLIE JEAN WOOTEN MILLER, age 84, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama passed away Friday (March 6, 2009) morning in a Rome nursing home. She was born in Dekalb County, Alabama to the late General William and Savannah Cole Wooten on December 1, 1924. Mrs. Miller was a Homemaker, Baptist by Faith, and was preceded in death by her husband the late Ollie Reed Miller.

Surviving are Her daughter-Pauline Sanchez of Cedar Bluff, AL.; sons-Jimmy Miller and Howard Miller of Rome and G. W. Miller of Trion; brother-Herbert Wooten of Ft. Payne, AL.; 11 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren, 5 Great Great Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews.

MR. SAMUEL C. (SAM) EDWARDS, age 81, of Bittings Avenue-Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday (March 5, 2009) morning in the local nursing home. A native Chattoogaian Mr. Edwards was born to the late Benjamin F. and Kathleen Smiley Edwards on February 17, 1928. He was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School Class of the church. Mr. Edwards was retired from the rubberizing department of the former Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill and was preceded in death by his wife the late Margaret Headrick Edwards on November 19, 2003.

Surviving are son-Samuel Merle Edwards of Slidell, LA.; granddaughter-Leslie Edwards of Jacksonville, FL.; brother-Ted Edwards of Armuchee; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MS. KRISTY NADINE MAYNARD, age 20, and BABY; passed away Monday evening in a Chattanooga hospital following a sudden illness. Born in Fredericksburg, Virginia on October 17, 1988; a daughter of the late Glenn Maynard and Brenda Dooley Maynard Blalock who survives. Kristy attended the Lyerly Pentecostal Tabernacle; she was preceded in death by grandmother the late Margie Dooley and brother-the late Matthew Blalock.

Surviving are mother & step Father-Brenda & Steve Blalock of Summerville; sister & spouse-Misty & Jeff Cordle of LaFayette; brothers & spouse-Mitch & Kathy Maynard and Wesley Blalock of Summerville; grandparents-Rev. Sidney & Betty Dooley, Zula Ellis, all of Summerville, Billy & Carol Blalock of Lyerly, and Jewell Maynard Ford of Summerville; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. REBECCA JAYNE RODGERS, age 58, of Gaylesville, Alabama formerly of Holland Community/Lyerly for 30 years, passed away Sunday (March 1, 2009) morning at her residence following an illness. A native of Cherokee County, Alabama she was born to the late James Dan Richey, Sr. and Frances Tevis Pruitt Richey on July 28, 1950. Mrs. Rodgers was a teller for AmSouth Bank for 20 years; later She was a Life Insurance Salesperson. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Gordon Rodgers.

Surviving are daughter & son-in-law-Laura & Ronald Bice of Summerville; grandchildren-Matthew Bice and Brittany Carmon; step grandchildren-Kevin and Tiffany Bice and Vinita Youngblood; sister-Gail Dorsett; brother-James Danny Richey both of Center, AL.; two nieces-April Greene and Denise Cope.

MR. JASON ALLEN YOUNG, age 35, of Peach Street-Trion, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2008, in a Rome hospital following a sudden illness. Born in Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia on November 7, 1973 He was a son of the late Pamela Sue Ball Young and Richard Allen Young who survives. He was a truck driver.

MS. PAMELA GREEN, age 48, of Old Hwy 27-Trion, Georgia passed away Monday morning (February 23, 2009) at her residence. Ms. Green was born in Gadsden, AL on June 10, 1960- to the late John and Helen Chapman Cantrell.

Surviving are daughter Kelle Green of Trion; son Randy Green of Summerville. Two sisters: Ramona Cantrell of Rainesville, Al and Paula Raye Bartlett of Lake City,FL. One brother: Ray Cantrell of Ft. Payne, AL. Two grandsons: Jordan Green and Andrew Hinton both of Trion. Several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

MRS. WANDA ORR BLALOCK, age 62, of Lyerly Street-Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday (January 17, 2009) at Her residence following a brief illness. Born in Trion, Georgia on March 9, 1946 to the late Roy and Nora Crane Orr. She was a member of Dry Valley Baptist Church and was retired Teacher from the Trion School system. Wanda was preceded in death by her husband the late Michael Blalock.

Surviving are son-Josh Blalock of Summerville; beloved “special children”, Luis Gonzalez and Belle Gonzalez; special friends and sisters in Christ, Grace Sunday School Class of Dry Valley Baptist Church.

MR. CHESTER BLACKMON, age 71, of Rose Circle-Trion, Georgia passed away Wednesday night (January 14, 2009) in a Rome hospital. He was born in Paulding County, Georgia on June 28, 1937 to the late Rufus Harrison Blackmon and Lillian May Evans Blackmon who survives. Mr. Blackmon was Holiness by Faith and was employed in the Weaving Department of Mt. Vernon Mills. He was preceded in death by a brother the late Wayne Kenneth Blackmon and sister-the late Emma Jean Burroughs.

A native of Austell, Georgia She was born to the late Vandiver Tilden and Elizabeth Tecorah Sanders Adams on August 10, 1916. Mrs. Pullen was a member of Summerville First Baptist Church, a Homemaker, and was preceded in death by Her husband the late Jodie A. (Joe) Pullen.

Surviving are Her beloved sons & daughters-in-law-Joe & Jan Pullen of Lyerly and Van & Phyllis Pullen of Summerville; grandchildren-Andrea & Guy Ingram of Atlanta and Allison Pullen of Summerville; great grandchildren-Drew Pullen and Wil Ingram; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mrs Hazel Idell Runyan age 81, of Given Street Summerville Georgia passed away Saturday January 3rd, 2009 in a Rome hospital. A native of Dekald county Alabama, she was born to the late Jessie Monroe on August 21st, 1927. Mrs Runyan was Baptist by Faith and retired from the spinning department or the former Geneva Cotton Mill.

Surviving are husband, Bobbie C. Runyan; daughter, Debbie Ponder of Summerville; son, Roger Swanson Fife of Alabama; half brother, Gene Monroe of Alabama; four Grandchildren; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday January 6th, at 1:00 pm at the J.D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Odum officiating.
